Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Infant Feeding and Allied Topics: For Physicians and Students The author's purpose in publishing a work upon "Infant Feeding and Allied Topics" is to meet the many requests received from his students and from his medical colleagues who have honored him with! their confidence. The contents will be found to be largely clinical and practical, and to embody the author's personal experience with the problems presented. Theorizing and the presentation of a medley of views of different authorities have been studiously avoided. Credit has not always been given for views expressed which are not original, although the attempt has been made to do so where the fact stated is eminently new and, as yet, has not become a part of common medical knowledge. Quotations and references have been avoided as much as possible, as they are time-consuming and generally annoying, distracting the mind of the reader from the text. In not a few instances the author has indulged in the repetition of certain facts and statements. This has been done largely for the sake of emphasis and to insure the individual completeness of the presentation of the particular topic under discussion, and also to avoid references and cross-references. A serious attempt has been made to emphasize the importance of breast feeding and the digestive problems which present themselves in this class of patients. Download or read book Principles and Practice of Infant Feeding Classic Reprint written by Julius H. Hess and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Infant Feeding The dependence of the offspring upon its mother for food to supply its primitive needs can only be realized when we remember that one-fourth of the civilized race die during the first year of life, and that 60 per cent. of these deaths are due to nutritional disturbances, while a large portion of the other 40 per cent. are primarily dependent upon impairment of the infant's constitution by improper feeding. The mortality of the first year is nearly 60 times that of the fifteenth year, and it is not until we approach the 85th year that we meet with such a high percentage death-rate. The problem is not simply to save life during the perilous first year, but to adopt those means which shall tend to healthy growth and normal development. The child must be fed not only to avoid the immediate dangers of acute indigestion, diarrhea, and marasmus, but the more remote ones - rickets, scurvy, and general malnutrition. These latter three are the most important conditions that predispose to disease in early life. A growing child requires far more food than its weight would indicate. For, in the first place, its intake must exceed its expenditure, so that it may grow. The expenditure of an organism is pretty nearly in proportion, not to its mass, but to its surface.
