Book A Real time Method for Estimating Viscous Forebody Drag Coefficients

Download or read book A Real time Method for Estimating Viscous Forebody Drag Coefficients written by Stephen A. Whitmore and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops a real-time method based on the law of the wake for estimating forebody skin-friction coefficients. The incompressible law-of-the-wake equations are numerically integrated across the boundary layer depth to develop an engineering model that relates longitudinally averaged skin-friction coefficients to local boundary layer thickness. Solutions applicable to smooth surfaces with pressure gradients and rough surfaces with negligible pressure gradients are presented. Model accuracy is evaluated by comparing model predictions with previously measured flight data. This integral law procedure is beneficial in that skin-friction coefficients can be indirectly evaluated in real-time using a single boundary layer height measurement. In this concept a reference pitot probe is inserted into the flow, well above the anticipated maximum thickness of the local boundary layer. Another probe is servomechanism-driven and floats within the boundary layer. A controller regulates the position of the floating probe. The measured servomechanism of this second probe provides an indirect measurement of both local and longitudinally averaged skin friction. Simulation results showing the performance of the control law for a noisy boundary layer are then presented.

Book Engineering Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Engineering Fluid Mechanics written by William Graebel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-01-19 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid mechanics is a core component of many undergraduate engineering courses. It is essential for both students and lecturers to have a comprehensive, highly illustrated textbook, full of exercises, problems and practical applications to guide them through their study and teaching. Engineering Fluid Mechanics By William P. Grabel is that book The ISE version of this comprehensive text is especially priced for the student market and is an essential textbook for undergraduates (particularly those on mechanical and civil engineering courses) designed to emphasis the physical aspects of fluid mechanics and to develop the analytical skills and attitudes of the engineering student. Example problems follow most of the theory to ensure that students easily grasp the calculations, step by step processes outline the procedure used, so as to improve the students' problem solving skills. An Appendix is included to present some of the more general considerations involved in the design process. The author also links fluid mechanics to other core engineering courses an undergraduate must take (heat transfer, thermodynamics, mechanics of materials, statistics and dynamics) wherever possible, to build on previously learned knowledge.

Book Review of the U S Department of Energy s Heavy Vehicle Technologies Program

Download or read book Review of the U S Department of Energy s Heavy Vehicle Technologies Program written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As national priorities have been focused both on reducing fuel consumption and improving air quality, attention has increased on reducing emissions from many types of vehicles, including light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles. Meeting the recently promulgated (and proposed) emission standards and simultaneously increasing fuel economy will pose especially difficult challenges for diesel-powered vehicles and will require the development of new emission-reduction technologies. In response to a request from the director of OHVT, the National Research Council formed the Committee on Review of DOE's Office of Heavy Vehicle Technologies to conduct a broad, independent review of its research and development (R&D) activities.

Book Footprint Determination for Reusable Launch Vehicles Experiencing Control Effector Failures

Download or read book Footprint Determination for Reusable Launch Vehicles Experiencing Control Effector Failures written by David B. Doman and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to compute the maximum area on the earth's surface (footprint) reachable by an autonomous air vehicle can be useful in planning for the vehicle's safe operations. The information can be important when the vehicle experiences subsystem failures causing it to be unable to maintain its nominal performance. In this paper, we present a method to calculate the footprint of a reusable launch vehicle that experiences a failure in one or more of its aero-control surfaces. During a control effector failure, the maximum attainable moments of the vehicle are reduced, which may decrease the range of conditions that the vehicle can maintain a trimmed condition. Additionally, the lift and drag characteristics of the vehicle can change when control effectors are moved to off-nominal positions to correct for moment imbalance caused by failures or damage. As a result, the footprint of the vehicle is reduced. A technique for calculating the available effectiveness of the aero-control surfaces is used in conjunction with a footprint generation algorithm to include the effects of rotational trim on the vehicle footprint.
