This book deals comprehensively with traditional musical instruments and their role and function in ceremonies on Vanuatu. Music, dance, and musical instruments are not only means to highlight certain moments in ceremonies, but help to set up an entire network of secrets. Book Encyclopedia of Hair

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hair written by Victoria Sherrow and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular volume on the culture of hair through human history and around the globe has been updated and revised to include even more entries and current information. How we style our hair has the ability to shape the way others perceive us. For example, in 2017, the singer Macklemore denounced his hipster undercut hairstyle, a style that is associated with Hitler Youth and alt-right men, and in 2015, actress Rose McGowan shaved her head in order to take a stance against the traditional Hollywood sex symbol stereotype. This volume examines how hair-or lack thereof-can be an important symbol of gender, class, and culture around the world and through history. Hairstyles have come to represent cultural heritage and memory, and even political leanings, social beliefs, and identity. This second edition builds upon the original volume, updating all entries that have evolved over the last decade, such as by discussing hipster culture in the entries on beards and mustaches and recent medical breakthroughs in hair loss. New entries have been added that look at specific world regions, hair coverings, political symbolism behind certain styles, and other topics.

Book The G l d Spectacle

Download or read book The G l d Spectacle written by Babatunde Lawal and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable study explores the use of the visual and performing arts to promote nonviolence and social harmony in sub-Saharan Africa. It focuses on Gelede, a popular community festival of masquerade, dance, and song, held several times a year by the Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. Babatunde Lawal, an art historian and African scholar who has taught in Nigeria, Brazil, and the United States, is himself a Yoruba and has taken an active part in Gelede. He writes from the perspective of an informed participant/observer of his own culture. Lawal bases his book on extensive field research--observations and interviews--conducted over more than two decades as well as on numerous published and unpublished scholarly sources. He casts significant new light on many previously obscure aspects of Gelede, and he demonstrates a useful methodological approach to the study of non-Western art. The book systematically covers the major aspects of the Gelede spectacle, presenting its cultural background and historical origins as preface to a vivid and detailed description of an actual performance. This is followed by a discussion of the iconography and aesthetics of costume, and an examination of the sculpted images on the masks. The book concludes with a discussion of the moral and aesthetic philosophy of Gelede and its responsiveness to technological and social change. The Gelede Spectacle is illustrated in color and black-and-white with over 100 field and museum photographs, including a rare sequence on the dressing of a masquerader. It offers, in addition, more than 60 Gelede song texts, proverbs, and divination verses, each in the original Yoruba as well as in translation. Lawal's interpretations of these pieces indicate the rich complexities of metaphor and analogy inherent in the Yoruba language and art.

Book excerpt: History has always mattered to Scots, and rarely more so than now at the outset of a new century, with a new census appearing in 2011 and after more than ten years of a new parliament. An almost limitless archive of our history lies hidden inside our bodies and we carry the ancient story of Scotland around with us. The mushrooming of genetic studies, of DNA analysis, is rewriting our history in spectacular fashion. In The Scots: A Genetic Journey, Alistair Moffat explores the history that is printed on our genes, and in a remarkable new approach, uncovers the detail of where we are from, who we are and in so doing colour vividly a DNA map of Scotland.

Book Mapping the World of Anglo American Studies at the Turn of the Century

Download or read book Mapping the World of Anglo American Studies at the Turn of the Century written by Marija Knežević and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume revisits the most important issues that Anglo-American studies are facing at the beginning of the twenty-first century, with regards to both research and teaching. Given the English language’s status as a lingua franca, the culture that produced it, and that has been changing it, the literature written in English, and relevant linguistic and literary discourse have come to largely dominate critical theory globally. Therefore, the subjects of Anglo-American studies, and their traditional and modern concepts, must be approached from a multidisciplinary perspective, and must also be problematized in, and determined by, other spheres of the world, especially at the universities at which they are studied. This book, consequently, approaches both mainstream cultural, literary, linguistic and academic achievements and, often by way of comparison, those smaller, more distant, and marginalized fields, traditionally subordinate studies, as well as instances of cultural hybridization. Given its concern with a broad field of culture, literature, linguistics, and methodology of teaching English as a foreign language, this book consists of two main parts comprising the closest research and teaching fields; one attending to culture and literature, and the other approaching linguistics and methodology.
