"Heliopolis" is Greek, meaning "City of the Sun." the city of Heliopolis was the center of worship for the sun god, Ra. It was located in the Nile delta. The local name for this city was On or Iwn. In ancient times it was an important religious and educational center; it served as a significant temple to Ra and housed one of three Egyptian universities--the other was Memphis and Thinis--where students studied subjects like philosophy, astronomy, theology, and healing arts. The Valley of the Kings (or Theban Necropolis) is a valley in Egypt. It's where pharaohs were buried, so it's essential to the history of Egypt. There are over 60 tombs in this area, including several that have not been fully excavated yet. The Valley of the Kings is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites and is open to visitors daily! Memphis was the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom. During these periods, Memphis was also the religious center of ancient Egypt. Its importance can be attributed to its strategic position along important trade routes between Upper and Lower Egypt. The city was first established by Menes (Narmer), who united Upper and Lower Egypt into one kingdom around 3100 BCE. He chose the site due to its strategic location on a north-south trade route connecting Thebes with Avaris; it would later serve as an important center for foreign affairs in later years as well. The city flourished under various kings during this period--namely Ahmose I, who moved his capital from Thebes to Memphis after defeating Nubia during his reign (ca 1550-1525 BCE); Thutmose III, who expanded it further upon becoming king; Hatshepsut, who established temples there while building new ones at Deir el-Bahri; Rameses II whose temple complex included four obelisks weighing over 200 tons each; Ramses III who built another temple at Medinet Habu near Aswan where he inscribed texts detailing military campaigns against Corfu Island in Crete (modern-day Greece). In ancient times, the people would worship the Gods by building a temple. It was their way of showing that they loved and respected their gods. Temples were built in honor of the god related to that place. For example, a temple for Ra (sun god) will be built close to where there is plenty of sunlight so he can shine on his followers daily. Temples usually have columns around them but only from one side; this was done because the Egyptians believed that if they built it from all four sides, it would block out some of Ra's light which could anger him and make him hurt them or even kill them! The inside temples were made with beautiful decorations like paintings on walls showing what happens after death or statues made out of stone showing how someone looks when they die peacefully (hint: very old looking). The primary purpose for building these temples was because they served three primary purposes: worshiping your god(s), learning about them (libraries were often included), and performing rituals/prayers whenever you needed something important done quickly (for example, curing sicknesses).

Book excerpt: Before dealing with the special varieties of the Egyptians' belief in gods, it is best to try to avoid a misunderstanding of their whole conception of the supernatural. The term god has come to tacitly imply to our minds such a highly specialised group of attributes, that we can hardly throw our ideas back into the more remote conceptions to which we also attach the same name. It is unfortunate that every other word for supernatural intelligences has become debased, so that we cannot well speak of demons, devils, ghosts, or fairies without implying a noxious or a trifling meaning, quite unsuited to the ancient deities that were so beneficent and powerful. If then we use the word god for such conceptions, it must always be with the reservation that the word has now a very different meaning from what it had to ancient minds. To the Egyptian the gods might be mortal; even Ra, the sun-god, is said to have grown old and feeble, Osiris was slain, and Orion, the great hunter of the heavens, killed and ate the gods. The mortality of gods has been dwelt on by Dr. Frazer (Golden Bough), and the many instances of tombs of gods, and of the slaying of the deified man who was worshipped, all show that immortality was not a divine attribute. Nor was there any doubt that they might suffer while alive; one myth tells how Ra, as he walked on earth, was bitten by a magic serpent and suffered torments. The gods were also supposed to share in a life like that of man, not only in Egypt but in most ancient lands. Offerings of food and drink were constantly supplied to them, in Egypt laid upon the altars, in other lands burnt for a sweet savour. At Thebes the divine wife of the god, or high priestess, was the head of the harem of concubines of the god; and similarly in Babylonia the chamber of the god with the golden couch could only be visited by the priestess who slept there for oracular responses. The Egyptian gods could not be cognisant of what passed on earth without being informed, nor could they reveal their will at a distant place except by sending a messenger; they were as limited as the Greek gods who required the aid of Iris to communicate one with another or with mankind. The gods, therefore, have no divine superiority to man in conditions or limitations; they can only be described as pre-existent, acting intelligences, with scarcely greater powers than man might hope to gain by magic or witchcraft of his own. This conception explains how easily the divine merged into the human in Greek theology, and how frequently divine ancestors occurred in family histories.

Unsurprisingly, then, the ancient Egyptian gods permeated every aspect of existence. There are few characters in Egyptian myth whose image and name are more widely known than Horus. His name most probably means "the Distant One;" as the celestial falcon, his wings were believed to span the length of the distant sky and his eyes were the sun and the moon. This name betrays the connection Horus shared with Re, the "all powerful" sun god, and also hints at his earlier incarnation as one of the earliest celestial gods in Egyptian religious belief. One of the earliest images from ancient Egypt is that of a falcon residing in the famous "sun-Barque" of Re, which the ancient Egyptians believed traversed the sky during the day and crossed the dangerous land of the dead during the night. Horus' place in the sun-barque probably represents Horus as a 'star or planet crossing the Winding Waterway of the sky," since the ancient Egyptians were famous for their complex astronomical system that incorporated many mythical elements, but his position there is much more than being just another of the sun-god's divine entourage. Horus' mythological lineage places him as the direct descendant of the Ennead, the nine gods and goddesses who were formed from the earlier abstract concepts in the primordial waters of "Nun." This places him at an interesting crossroads in terms of his relationships with the greater pantheon. Not being one of the Ennead weakens Horus' claim to the divine right of kingship, in contrast to Seth, his uncle, who could claim primacy as one of the Ennead himself. The result of this contention made for a fascinating power struggle and a myth that would have real-world ramifications throughout the vast expanse of Egyptian history. Horus would eventually ascend the throne of his father, Osiris, and for this reason he held a deep connection with the throne of united Egypt. The earliest kings were shown as hawks (long considered part of the "Falconidae Family") preying on their enemies, the reason for which lies in the mythological foundation of Horus' life and also in the real world understanding of the "history" of the royal line of kings. Integral to Horus' myths is the notion of royal inheritance. Born of the murdered god Osiris and the magical goddess Isis, Horus' - the younger, at least - life was defined by his establishment of the royal line of Egyptian kings. To the modern Western reader, this notion of gods being mortal and inheriting the power of their fathers may seem a little strange, but, to the ancient Egyptians, stories about feuding mortal deities were par for the rather strange course, and an understanding of the nuances of Egyptian religious belief can go some way towards dispelling that confusion.
