Book The Power Spectral Analysis of Concurrent Airplane and Tower Measurements of Atmospheric Turbulence

Download or read book The Power Spectral Analysis of Concurrent Airplane and Tower Measurements of Atmospheric Turbulence written by U. OSCAR. LAPPE and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The joint tower-airplane experiment was designed to provide concurrent turbulence data for one flight level (at or near tower height) and at the same time to supplement these data with airplane measurements above, and tower measurements below, the tower height. Three tower locations were incorporated in this experiment in an attempt to determine the effects of diffn be simply related to turbulence measured at a fixed point as a function of time, (2) Obtain data for examining low level temporal and spatial homogeneity, (3) Investigate the influence of terrain variations on the turbulence power spectral densitrent topographical conditions on the turbulence spectrum. The 4 principal objectives were: (1) Obtain data to test the hypothesis of G.I. Taylor (1937) that turbulence encountered along a path in space aligned with the mean wind can be simply related to turbulence measured at a fixed point as a function of time, (2) Obtain data for examining low level temporal and spatial homogeneity, (3) Investigate the influence of terrain variations on the turbulence power spectral densities, and (4) Investigate the variation of turbulence characteristics with height above ground. Book Spanwise Measurements of Vertical Components of Atmospheric Turbulence

Download or read book Spanwise Measurements of Vertical Components of Atmospheric Turbulence written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Correlation and spectrum magnitude estimates are computed for vertical gust velocity measurements at the nose and wing tips of a NASA B-57B aircraft for six level flight, low speed and low altitude runs and are compared with those of the von Karman atmospheric turbulence model extended for spanwise relationships. The distance between the wing tips was 62.6 ft. Airspeeds ranged from about 330 to 400 ft/sec, heights above the ground ranged from near ground level to about 5250 ft. and gust velocity standard deviations ranged from 4.10 to 8.86 ft/sec. Integral scale lengths, determined by matching measured autocorrelation estimates with those of the model, ranged from 410 to 2050 ft. Digital signals derived from piezoelectric sensors provided continuous pressure and airspeed measurements. Some directional acceleration sensitivity of the sensors was eliminated by sensor orientation, and their performance was spectrally verified for the higher frequencies with supplemental onboard piezoresistive sensors. The model appeared to satisfactorily predict the trends of the measured cross-correlations and cross-spectrum magnitudes, particularly between the nose and wing tips. However, the measured magnitude estimates of the cross-spectra between the wing tips exceeded the predicted levels at the higher frequencies. Causes for the additional power across the wing tips were investigated. Vertical gust velocity components evaluated along and lateral to the flight path implied that the frozen-turbulence-field assumption is a suitable approximation. Sleeper, Robert K. Book Measurements of Atmospheric Turbulence Over a Wide Range of Wavelength for One Meteorological Condition

Download or read book Measurements of Atmospheric Turbulence Over a Wide Range of Wavelength for One Meteorological Condition written by Harold L. Crane and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for obtaining a power spectrum of gust vertical velocity over a wide range of wavelength from simultaneous measurements made in flight has been devised and applied. This method has the advantage of not involvhg the use of airplane transfer functions. A gust vertical velocity spectrum was determined for one meteorological condition for wavelengths from 10 feet to 60,000 feet. The test was conducted at low altitude in clear- turbulence having a root-mean-square intensity of 5 feet per second. At the higher frequencies (shorterwavelengths), the power spectral density varied at a rate which was between the -5/3 power which has been predicted theoretically and the inverse square of the frequency. The spectrum which was obtained tended to flatten out for the longest test wavelengths. The break frequency which provides an indication of the scale of the turbulence occurred at a wavelength of approximately 6,000 feet. The results obtained indicate that the method of obtaining spectra used in this investigation is practicable.
