Book Politics Inequality and the Australian Welfare State After Liberalisation

Download or read book Politics Inequality and the Australian Welfare State After Liberalisation written by Ben Spies-Butcher and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoliberalism has transformed work, welfare, and democracy. However, its impacts, and its future, are more complex than we often imagine. Alongside growing inequality, social spending has been rising. Medicare was entrenched alongside privatization. How do we understand this contradictory politics, and what opportunities are there to advance equality? This book takes the three big drivers of inequality – conditionality of benefits, marketisation of services and financialisation of the life course– to explore how inequality has been contested. Alongside the rise of the market, it reveals the building blocks of a more egalitarian order and opportunities for new models of solidarity based on an ethic of care.

Book Policies and Plans for Rural People Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Policies and Plans for Rural People Routledge Revivals written by Paul Cloke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection, first published in 1988, was the first title to bring international perspectives into the field of rural planning. Using a comparative approach and a broad range of case studies, including Britain, Scandinavia, the U.S.S.R. and New Zealand, the authors review the major problems faced within rural areas, and policy responses to these problems. Each study deals with the political and institutional frameworks involved in the management of rural areas and the means by which policies have been implemented. With an introduction from Paul Cloke that places rural policies and plans within the context of the state, this reissue will be of great value to any students with an interest in the planning and organisation of rural communities across the world.

Book Disability and Social Movements

Download or read book Disability and Social Movements written by Rachel Carling-Jenkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the reader with a ground-breaking understanding of disability and social movements. By describing how disability is philosophically, historically, and theoretically positioned, Carling-Jenkins is able to then examine disability relationally through an evaluation of the contributions of groups engaged in similar human rights struggles. The book locates disability rights as a new social movement and provides an explanation for why disability has been divided rather than united in Australia. Finally, it investigates whether the recent campaign to implement a national disability insurance scheme represents a re-emergence of the movement. It will be of interest to all scholars and students of both disability studies and social movements.

Book excerpt: Australia's post-war immigration confronts historians with perhaps the greatest paradox in our recent history. Policies and programmes of the 1940s and 1950s, designed and adopted to confirm and fortify our identity as a British-European outpost, eventually resulted in a complete abandonment of racian exclusivity. For more than half a century 'White Australia' was the foundation population policy and socio-cultural programme of the Australian Commonwealth. Bold Experiment, the first general collection of source material to describe and analyse the pattern of our immigration history since 1945, traces the undermining and destruction of 'White Australia', and the goals, policies and programmes which have replaced it. Bold Experiment, a collection of documents, examines the development of immigration policy since 1945, the migrant experience, and the host response. It is divided into four roughly chronological, though overlapping, sections. Section One examines the origins of Australia's 'bold experiment', the development of policy and its implementation between 1945 and 1954, and migrant experiences in those years. Section Two explores aspects of the settlement experience of those who were part of the large migrations from Britain, Italy, Greece and other parts of Europe between the 1940s and the 1970s. Section Three focuses upon the decline of the White Australia policy in the 1960s, its overturning as a consequence of the Vietnam War, the refugee crisis, the settlement experience of migrants from Indochina, and the controversy surrounding their immigration. Section 4 explores the recent debate over desirable and undesirable outcomes of immigration in which one side asserts that it has led to a crisis of national identity, while the other celebrates a new diversity. This section also deals with migrants' perspectives on themselves, their communities and their place in Australian society.

Download or read book Equity in the City written by P.N. Troy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equity in the City is a collection of nine studies of the way the results of public investment in urban services are shared out among city-dwellers. The essays describe the way services such as water supply, electricity, roads and parks are financed and they analyse the way certain residents receive benefits from the public purse while others don't. It examines the impact on planning and zoning and building regulation in terms of who gains the benefits from government. Equity and the city reveals scarce public resources are allocated.
