Book excerpt: In September 2000 the Institute of Southern African Studies, Maseru, and the Human Sciences Research Council, Pretoria, conducted a national survey of public opinion on developmental issues in Lesotho. The intention was to gauge the sentiments of a representative sample of adult residents about a range of socio- political and economic issues. This book represents the findings of that survey and outlines the methodology used in the design of it. The commentary, provided by Southern African scholars mainly from the University of Lesotho is accompanied by relevant tables, graphs and maps. The first in a series of three books, it will be followed by the findings of similar surveys carried out in South Africa and Namibia.

Book The State of Poverty and Food Insecurity in Maseru Lesotho

Download or read book The State of Poverty and Food Insecurity in Maseru Lesotho written by Crush, Jonathan and published by Southern African Migration Programme. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report on food insecurity in urban Lesotho is the latest in a series on Southern African cities issued by AFSUN. Like the previous reports, it focuses on one city (Maseru) and on poor neighbourhoods and households in that city. More than 60% of poor households surveyed in Maseru were severely food insecure. While food price increases worsen food insecurity for poor households, it is poverty that weakens the resilience of society to absorb these increases. This report argues that Maseru residents face specific and interrelated challenges with respect to food and nutrition insecurity. These are poverty; limited local livelihood opportunities; and dependence on food imports. Among AFSUN’s recommendations are improved infrastructure as a fundamental pre-condition for meaningful development; the creation of livelihood opportunities within the food system; social safety nets designed in ways that promote economic growth and equity; and free movement of labour between Lesotho and South Africa, which would dramatically improve the incomes of many poor households. The Government of Lesotho and the Maseru Municipality and District can direct both aid and investment into an integrated food security strategy that prioritizes urban infrastructure, livelihoods, welfare and mobility. This takes political will, but the development and implementation of such a food security strategy is well within the reach of the country’s leaders.

Book Migration Remittances and Development in Lesotho

Download or read book Migration Remittances and Development in Lesotho written by Jonathan Crush and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010-07-17 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between migration, development and remittances in Lesotho has been exhaustively studied for the period up to 1990. This was an era when the vast majority of migrants from Lesotho were young men working on the South African gold mines and over 50 percent of households had a migrant mineworker. Since 1990, patterns of migration to South Africa have changed dramatically. The reconfiguration of migration between the two countries has had a marked impact on remittance flows to Lesotho. The central question addressed in this report is how the change in patterns of migration from and within Lesotho since 1990 has impacted on remittance flows and usage.
