The various contributions are accompanied by strong recommendations that challenge the holders of issues for their application in a process of co-construction for an active citizenship of transformation. It is a document of advocacy/indictment and lobbying in favor of the development, protection and improvement of the social conditions of the elderly and persons with disabilities in Africa in terms of health, food, housing, environment, social protection, income maintenance, employment and education, given their increasing numbers in relative and absolute terms. The issue of socially vulnerable people is thus brought to the forefront of important, if not permanent, political-social and scientific concerns. It is the subject of recurrent investigations and reflections within the special mechanism of the African Union, the Working Group on Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. The initial assignment is to build legal, psychological, socio-anthropological and political vehicles in order to initiate positive change and sustainable protection of VHPs, as well as customary protocols for their valorization in African cultures and traditions.

The importance of the human, economic and social issues caused by the question of generations’ solidarities led the International Society of Family Law to choose this theme for its XVIth World Congress (Lyon, July 19-23rd 2011). More than 200 speakers from 50 countries studied these questions from the legal angle, but also philosophic, economic and anthropological. This work collects a part of these papers about two great issues: the child, as the center of family solidarities; and the support for elders by family. Phenomena such as increasing life expectancy, population urbanization, labor-market entry barriers, decline of traditional family patterns, mark in depth our contemporary world and involve old solidarity disappearance and new solidarity emergence, reshaping relations between generations while bringing up the problem of the fate of the most vulnerable: children, the sick, disabled, and especially elderly people. – What then is the role of families and communities in protecting these people? – What is the relationship between public and private solidarity? – What are the rights and freedoms of people placed by age, illness or disability in a dependence situation? These are the issues addressed by the authors of this book.

Book excerpt: At the turn of the century and the beginning of the new Millennium, India has made extraordinary industrial and economic progress. At the same time the sub-continent is faced with innumerable problems in the area of basic social services. Religion plays an important role in the interpersonal relationship and social interaction of the people. Religion is not only worship and prayer, but dictates such factors as who could come in physical contact with the other and who has the right to draw water from a well and who is deprived of it. Because of these factors it is necessary to look at the perception of disability in the soteriologies of India. This study confines itself to Hinduism as the major religion of India, that is based on the achievement of salvation and thus to escape the cycle of birth-, death- and rebirth and Christianity, on the other hand, that is involved in trying to improve the conditions of the poor and the needy and its main precept is the love of neighbours. It would be interesting to pursue these distinctions in reviewing the perception of disability in both these religions.

Une situation paradoxale au regard des nombreuses études démontrant que le sport est l'un des leviers les plus efficaces pour favoriser l'inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap. L'un des défis porte sur la formation du personnel encadrant. Une adaptation des savoirs techniques et pédagogiques aux pratiques et aux publics handicapés semble nécessaire. C'est ce constat qui a conduit le think tank Sport et Citoyenneté à réunir un groupe de travail européen sur cette question. Cet ouvrage est le résultat de ces trois années d'échanges. Il fournit plusieurs pistes de réflexion sur le développement, avec une priorité forte: le développement d'une base légale pour l'intégration de cours spécifiques sur la façon d'appréhender le handicap dans les cursus de formation aux métiers du sport. 56% of European citizens with a disability say that they never do any regular physical activity. This is a paradox in view of the many studies showing that sport is one of the most effective ways of encouraging inclusion. One of the challenges concerns the training of sports and physical activity instructors and coaches.Technical and teaching knowledge need to be adapted to take account of disabled sport practice and persons with a disability. This observation led the Sport and Citizenship think tank to bring together a European work group on this subject. This work is the result of three years of discussions. It provides various points for consideration on the development of an appropriate training course which will help support and integrate persons with a disability in the best possible way.
