  • Author : Lily Singer-Avitz
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2022-12-27

Download or read book Yotvata written by Lily Singer-Avitz and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2022-12-27 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the final report of the excavations at Yotvata, the largest oasis in the Arabah Valley, conducted by the Sonia and Marco Nadler Institute of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University in 1974–1980 under the direction of Dr. Zeʾev Meshel. The report covers two central sites: a fortified Iron I site and an Early Islamic settlement. The Iron I remains consist of an irregular casemate wall surrounding a courtyard. The location of this site suggests that the settlement was established in order to protect the water sources and to overlook and supervise the nearby crossroads. Based on the relative proximity of the site to Timna, it may be concluded that the oasis formed the main source of water and wood for the population involved in copper production in that region. The rich finds uncovered at the Early Islamic settlement—including a large courtyard building and a nearby bathhouse, among other structures—point to habitation from the end of the seventh to the early ninth century CE. The proximity of the settlement to a sophisticated irrigation system (qanat) and the administrative/economic ostraca discovered at the site suggest that it served as the center of an agricultural estate owned by an elite Muslim family. Among the unique finds is a large assemblage of locally produced, handmade pottery, which is thoroughly studied here. The findings from the excavations at the Yotvata oasis have made a major contribution to the study of Early Islamic settlement and material culture in the greater Arabah region and beyond.

Book Ancient Asyut

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jochem Kahl
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Ancient Asyut written by Jochem Kahl and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to a poor history of research and the deprival of many of its monuments, Asyut had been forgotten for a long time. The ancient site, its town, its temples, and its necropolis had not been the focus of any archaeological interest since the 1920s. In the 1980s and 1990s some attempts to start scientifi c work in Asyut failed. Only in 2003 a new field project began: The Asyut Project. A joint mission of the Universities of Munster (2003 and 2004), Mainz (2004 up to present) and Sohag (2003 up to present). Fieldwork and studies of former research work enabled the author to reconstruct for the first time the history of the ancient necropolis, and thereby of the ancient town and its different fortunes as a city of culture, as a border town, and as a wounded city.

Book Following Osiris

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Smith
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 019958222X
  • Pages : 666 pages

Download or read book Following Osiris written by Mark Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osiris, god of the dead, was one of ancient Egypt's most important deities. The earliest secure evidence for belief in him dates back to the fifth dynasty (c.2494-2345BC), but he continued to be worshipped until the fifth century AD. Following Osiris is concerned with ancient Egyptian conceptions of the relationship between Osiris and the deceased, or what might be called the Osirian afterlife, asking what the nature of this relationship was and what the prerequisites were for enjoying its benefits. It does not seek to provide a continuous or comprehensive account of Egyptian ideas on this subject, but rather focuses on five distinct periods in their development, spread over four millennia. The periods in question are ones in which significant changes in Egyptian ideas about Osiris and the dead are known to have occurred or where it has been argued that they did, as Egyptian aspirations for the Osirian afterlife took time to coalesce and reach their fullest form of expression. An important aim of the book is to investigate when and why such changes happened, treating religious belief as a dynamic rather than a static phenomenon and tracing the key stages in the development of these aspirations, from their origin to their demise, while illustrating how they are reflected in the textual and archaeological records. In doing so, it opens up broader issues for exploration and draws meaningful cross-cultural comparisons to ask, for instance, how different societies regard death and the dead, why people convert from one religion to another, and why they abandon belief in a god or gods altogether.

Book Archaeology of Empire in Achaemenid Egypt

Download or read book Archaeology of Empire in Achaemenid Egypt written by Henry P. Colburn and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the material culture of Egypt during the period of Achaemenid Persian rule, c. 526-404 BCEProvides a clear overview of the archaeological evidence for Achaemenid Egypt, including temples, tombs, irrigation works, statues, stelae, seals and coinsDemonstrates how different types of evidence, both textual and archaeological - including material of uncertain provenance - can be used to address a single historical questionOffers critical discussion of the dating criteria used by archaeologists for Egyptian Late Period materialElucidates strategies used by the Persians to establish and maintain control of EgyptExamines how these strategies may have affected the lives of people living in Egypt during the 27th DynastyCreates a new explanatory model for the introduction of coinage to ancient EgyptPrevious studies have characterised Achaemenid rule of Egypt either as ephemeral and weak or oppressive and harsh. These characterisations, however, are based on the perceived lack of evidence for this period, filtered through ancient and modern preconceptions about the Persians.Henry Colburn challenges these views by assembling and analyzing the archaeological remains from this period, including temples, tombs, irrigation works, statues, stelae, sealings, drinking vessels and coins. By looking at the decisions made about material culture - by Egyptians, Persians and others - it becomes possible to see both how the Persians integrated Egypt into their empire and the full range of experiences people had as a result.
