Book Sustainable Development of Algal Biofuels in the United States

Download or read book Sustainable Development of Algal Biofuels in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biofuels made from algae are gaining attention as a domestic source of renewable fuel. However, with current technologies, scaling up production of algal biofuels to meet even 5 percent of U.S. transportation fuel needs could create unsustainable demands for energy, water, and nutrient resources. Continued research and development could yield innovations to address these challenges, but determining if algal biofuel is a viable fuel alternative will involve comparing the environmental, economic and social impacts of algal biofuel production and use to those associated with petroleum-based fuels and other fuel sources. Sustainable Development of Algal Biofuels was produced at the request of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Download or read book Algae Abstracts written by Office of Water Resources Research Staff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algae Abstracts is the first in a series of bibliographies on water re sources and pollution published by IFI/ Plenum Data Corporation in cooperation with the Water Resources Scientific Information Center (WRSIC). It is produced wholly from the information base compris ing material abstracted and indexed for Selected Water Resources Abstracts. The bibliography is divided into volumes according to the publication dates of the source documents. Volume 1 contains 569 abstracts cov ering publication dates up to and including 1969; Volume 2 contains 730 abstracts covering the years 1970 to 1972. The material included in this bibliography represents computer selections based on the presence of a form of the word "alga" somewhere in the referenced citation. Substantively, the material typifies WRSIC's "centers of com petence" approach to information support of the Office of Water Re sources Research (OWRR) of the Department of the Interior. Most of the references in this bibliography are the work of the center of competence on eutrophication at the University of Wisconsin. The indexes refer to the WRSIC accession number, which follows each abstract. The Significant Descriptor Index is made up of a fraction of the total descriptors and identifiers by which each paper has been indexed. It represents weighted terms that best describe the informa tion content; this status is indicated by the asterisks which precede them. The General Index includes all the remaining descriptors and identifiers by which each paper in this bibliography has been indexed.

Book Enzymes in the Environment

Download or read book Enzymes in the Environment written by Richard G. Burns and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-01-29 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to understand the biological processes that are important for essential aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem function has prompted much research into the field of ecological enzymology. This book presents the two broad areas of application in a compilation of reviews by 21 international experts in their respective fields. The first explores enzymatic activities to assess the processes or mechanisms that operate in a given system, such as the rhizosphere, plant leaves and shoots, soil surfaces, and biofilms. The second considers enzymes or microbial cells as sensors to detect microbial activity and stresses due to pollution, management, or climatic change in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Book Growth Regulators and Biostimulants Upcoming Opportunities

Download or read book Growth Regulators and Biostimulants Upcoming Opportunities written by Paromik Bhattacharyya and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent past, significant strides have been made in the domain of plant growth regulators (PGRs) and biostimulants. In the sustainable utilization of plant germplasm PGRs and biostimulants play a pivotal role. With a magnified growth rate and less risk of inducing clonal somaclonal variations, PGRs (such as auxins, gibberellins, isoprenoid and aromatic cytokinins, ethylene, and abscisic acid) serve as a boon to plant biologists especially those working with rare endangered and threatened species and medicinal and aromatic plant species. Furthermore, the combined effect of PGRs with LEDs (light-emitting diode) on various aspects of plant development is an area of research gaining attention. The use of biostimulants to promote plant growth, yield and stress tolerance has increasingly gained attention. However, their functional role in the growth and development of plants is not clearly understood.

Book Arid Land Irrigation in Developing Countries

Download or read book Arid Land Irrigation in Developing Countries written by E. Barton Worthington and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arid Land Irrigation in Developing Countries: Environmental Problems and Effects covers the proceedings of the International Symposium on Arid Land Irrigation, held in Alexandria, Egypt on February 16-21 1976. This book is organized into eight sections encompassing 46 chapters. The opening section deals first with the benefits of arid land irrigation and the effective use of water in irrigated agriculture. This section also tackles the public health and socio-economic impacts of irrigation, as well as the planning and managing of irrigation and drainage systems. The next section discusses the results of some case studies on arid land irrigation, such as in districts in Mexico, Iran, and Egypt. Other sections explore the influence of irrigation on changes in hydrological processes and cycle, soil fertility, water quality, and biological balances. The closing sections consider the human problems in irrigation areas, with an emphasis on the problem of schistosomiasis and malaria. These sections also look into the viewpoints of specialist agencies of the United Nations on arid land irrigation. This book will be of value to agriculturists, economists, and researchers.
