Book Simulation of Groundwater Flow at Beach Point Cape Cod Massachusetts

Download or read book Simulation of Groundwater Flow at Beach Point Cape Cod Massachusetts written by Larry Martin and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer modeling of the groundwater flow system underlying the Beach Point barrier beach was conducted to evaluate the potential for groundwater to flow toward, and discharge to, the East Harbor Lagoon under both existing conditions and with increased tidal flow to the lagoon. The elevation of the water table in the barrier beach fluctuates in response to tides in Cape Cod Bay. At high tide, water from the bay infiltrates into the barrier beach, causing the water table to rise. At low tide, groundwater drains from the barrier beach to the bay, lowering the water table. The amplitude of tidal fluctuation of the water table decreases with increasing distance from the bay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed geologist Robert Thorson has been fascinated by kettle lakes ever since his youth in the upper Midwest. As with historic stone walls, each kettle lake has a story to tell, and each is emblematic of the interplay between geology and history. Beyond Walden covers the natural history of kettle lakes, a band of small lakes that extends from the prairie potholes of Montana to the cranberry bogs of Cape Cod. Kettle lakes were formed by glaciers and are recognizable by their round shape and deep waters. Kettles are the most common and widely distributed "species" of natural lake in the United States. They have no inlet or outlet streams so they are essentially natural wells tapping the groundwater. Isolated from one another, each lake has its own personality, and is vulnerable to pollution and climate warming. The most famous kettle lake is Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts; but northern Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota are most closely associated with them. These lakes have had a tremendous impact on the livelihood and lifestyles of peoples of the area--Native Americans, early explorers and settlers, and the locals and tourists who now use the lakes for recreation. Thorson explores lake science: how kettle lakes are different from other lakes, what it takes to keep all lakes healthy, how global warming and other factors affect lakes. Beyond Walden has a strong environmental message, and will do for the kettle lakes of America's Heartland--and beyond--what Stone by Stone did for the historic stone walls of New England.

Book America s Natural Places East and Northeast

Download or read book America s Natural Places East and Northeast written by Donelle Nicole Dreese and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-11-25 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Maine's Acadia National Park to Kentucky's Natural Bridge State Park Nature Preserve, this volume provides a snapshot of the most spectacular and important natural places in the East and Northeast. America's Natural Places: East and Northeast examines over 50 of the most spectacular and important areas of this region, with each entry describing the importance of the area, the flora and fauna that it supports, threats to the survival of the region, and what is being done to protect it. Organized by state within the volume, this work informs readers about the wide variety of natural areas across the east and northeast and identifies places that may be near them that demonstrate the importance of preserving such regions.

Book America s Natural Places 5 volumes

Download or read book America s Natural Places 5 volumes written by Stacy S. Kowtko and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-11-25 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely set invites readers to celebrate the most beautiful and environmentally important places in the United States. Each of the United States boasts numerous special places that are significant for their biodiversity, ecology, habitats for rare and endangered species, or other qualities that make them unique and worthy of preservation. These sites range from nature preserves to state and national parks, wildlife areas, ecosystems that provide a home to diverse flora and fauna, and even scenic vistas. The five volumes of America's Natural Places examine over 200 of the most spectacular and important of these places, with each entry describing the importance of the area, the flora and fauna that it supports, threats to the survival of the region, and what is being done to protect it. Organized by state within regional volumes, this encyclopedia both informs the reader about the wide variety of natural areas across the country and identifies places nearby that demonstrate that preserving such treasurers is of immediate importance to every U.S. citizen.

Book The Simulated Effects of Wastewater management Actions on the Hydrologic System and Nitrogen loading Rates to Wells and Ecological Receptors Popponesset Bay Watershed Cape Cod Massachusetts

Download or read book The Simulated Effects of Wastewater management Actions on the Hydrologic System and Nitrogen loading Rates to Wells and Ecological Receptors Popponesset Bay Watershed Cape Cod Massachusetts written by Donald A. Walter and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discharge of excess nitrogen into Popponesset Bay, an estuarine system on western Cape Cod, has resulted in eutrophication and the loss of eel grass habitat within the estuaries. Septic-system return flow in residential areas within the watershed is the primary source of nitrogen. Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for nitrogen have been assigned to the six estuaries that compose the system, and local communities are in the process of implementing the TMDLs by the partial sewering, treatment, and disposal of treated wastewater at wastewater-treatment facilities (WTFs). Loads of waste-derived nitrogen from both current (1997–2001) and future sources can be estimated implicitly from parcel-scale water-use data and recharge areas delineated by a groundwater-flow model. These loads are referred to as “instantaneous” loads because it is assumed that the nitrogen from surface sources is delivered to receptors instantaneously and that there is no traveltime through the aquifer. The use of a solute-transport model to explicitly simulate the transport of mass through the aquifer from sources to receptors can improve implementation of TMDLs by (1) accounting for traveltime through the aquifer, (2) avoiding limitations associated with the estimation of loads from static recharge areas, (3) accounting more accurately for the effect of surface waters on nitrogen loads, and (4) determining the response of waste-derived nitrogen loads to potential wastewater-management actions. The load of nitrogen to Popponesset Bay on western Cape Cod, which was estimated by using current sources as input to a solute-transport model based on a steady-state flow model, is about 50 percent of the instantaneous load after about 7 years of transport (loads to estuary are equal to loads discharged from sources); this estimate is consistent with simulated advective traveltimes in the aquifer, which have a median of 5 years. Model-calculated loads originating from recharge areas reach 80 percent of the instantaneous load within 30 years; this result indicates that loads estimated from recharge areas likely are reasonable for estimating current instantaneous loads. However, recharge areas are assumed to remain static as stresses and hydrologic conditions change in response to wastewater-management actions.
