Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcards of the Army Service Corps 1902 - 1918 presents the early history of the Army Service Corps of the British Army by means of a unique collection of some 540 images, mainly contemporary postcards. The conduct of war changed dramatically in the late Victorian era, after the debacle in the Crimean War and humiliating setbacks in the Boer War. Commanders realized the vital importance of logistics in any campaign. The formation of the ASC marked a significant milestone in the modernization of the Army and it was fortunate that by the outbreak of The Great War the Corps was well established in the Order of Battle. The development and introduction of mechanical transport was to play a vital role throughout the 1914 - 1918 war and the ASC was pivotal to this. The images displayed in this superb book represent life in the ASC at a crucial period of its history. They show the personal side of soldiering as opposed to the more formal official perspective. All have been collected and captioned by the author who is the foremost expert on the Corps history. The result is a stunning array of images that capture military life as it was over 100 years ago.

Download or read book British Postcards of the First World War written by Peter Doyle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-20 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcards sent by men on the front, and to them by their families, are among the most numerous, and most telling, surviving artefacts of the Great War. They tell us much about attitudes towards the war, and provide a great insight into men's lives, and into the thoughts and emotions of those left behind. Very different in their illustration, and in their writing, between the beginning of the war and the end, postcards provide a social history of the war in microcosm. Illustrated with a wide range of postcards, this is a fascinating look into the response of the British people to the horrors of the war.
Download or read book First World War Uniforms written by Catherine Price-Rowe and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: View any image of a Tommy and his uniform becomes an assumed item, few would consider where and how that uniform was made. Over 5 million men served on the Western Front, they all required clothing. From August 1914 to March 1919, across all theaters of operations, over 28 million pairs of trousers and c.360 million yards of various cloth was manufactured.Worn by men of all ranks the uniform created an identity for the fighting forces, distinguished friend from foe, gave the enlisted man respect, a sense of unity whilst at the same time stripping away his identity, turning a civilian into a soldier. Men lived, worked, slept, fought and died in their uniform.Using the authors great-grandfather's war service as a backdrop, this book will uncover the textile industries and home front call to arms, the supply chain, salvage and repair workshops in France, and how soldiers maintained their uniform on the front line.Items of a soldiers uniform can become a way to remember and are often cherished by families, creating a tangible physical link with the past, but the durability of cloth to withstand time can create an important legacy. The fallen are still discovered today and remnants of uniform can help to identify them, at the very least the color of cloth or type of hob nail can give the individual his nationality allowing them to be given a final resting place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George C. Marshall was an American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense. Once noted as the "organizer of victory" by Winston Churchill for his leadership of the Allied victory in World War II, Marshall served as the United States Army Chief of Staff during the war and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As Secretary of State, his name was given to the Marshall Plan, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. He drafted this manuscript while he was in Washington, D.C., between 1919 and 1924 as aide-de-camp to General of the Armies John J. Pershing. However, given the growing bitterness of the "memoirs wars" of the period he decided against publication, and the draft sat unused until the 1970s when Marshall's step-daughter and her husband decided to publish it.

Book excerpt: "Army Service Corps 1902-1918 provides detailed perspective on the role of what was then a relatively unknown and undervalued Corps. Logistic Support, to use modern parlance, may be unglamorous but, without it, no war can ever be won." "Most of the contents of this book, including over 100 photographs and significant archive material, have never been published before. Army Service Corps 1902-1918, being a major contribution to our knowledge of the Great War and the period immediately preceding it, will appeal to both the specialist and general reader as well as providing essential background knowledge for all those serving in the successor Corps today."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Town of Salem was officially established when Simpson recorded his ownership at Fincastle Courthouse in October 1802, and it later became the government seat when Roanoke County was carved from Botetourt County in 1838. Roanoke County, like Salem, has emerged from its agrarian past to become a suburban county that embraces the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as the strength and success of corporate centers and residential communities.
