Book The Stamps and Postal History of Poonch

Download or read book The Stamps and Postal History of Poonch written by George Harell and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poonch lies on the western side of Kashmir. It is separated from Srinagar by the Pir Panjal moutain range with several passes exceeding 11,000 feet.Capt. S.H. Godfrey, who was the Assistant Resident in Kashmir and an early writer and collector of Poonch stamps and postal history noted, "the Poonch Post Office was one of the most honest administration in the world...." The stamps were issued for legitimate postal purposes to meet the necessity of improved communication with British India and Jammu and Kashmir. The first issues were no longer in use, years before their existence was known to collectors in Europe. The first envelope known with Poonch stamps was mailed in 1878; the State Post Office merged into the British India postal system at the end of 1894. Poonch stamps were individually printed on sheets using dies cut from either green-colored stone or brass. The published literature on Poonch stamps and postal history consists nearly exclusively of a relatively small number of journal publications and the author's website: www. poonchstamps.com which forms the basis of this book. The stamps of Poonch are not only collected by those interested in the stamps, their history and exotic local, but also by art collectors who are attracted to their bold use of color and abstract designs.

Book Tasmanian Postal Stationery

Book excerpt: This book aims to present all that is currently known about Tasmanian postal stationery. It covers the period up to (and sometimes beyond) the transfer of powers to the Commonwealth in 1912.It contains commentaries and listings for post cards, envelopes issued by the post office, registered envelopes, stamped to order stationery, reply cards, letter cards and wrappers. Each section commences with a history of the category. As well as the stationery items themselves, the book presents essays and proofs, specimen overprints and official punctures, printing details where known, earliest and latest dates of use and assessments of rarity. The book is profusely illustrated. The authors have attempted to settle some points of contention, differing in some cases from previous publications. Post Office reports to Parliament have been applied to estimate usage over thirty years, which is presented along with other evidence to support new conclusions. The wrappers and stamped to order sections include comprehensive comments and images of the businesses that adapted the stationery for their purposes. These two sections offer a rare historical insight into the final twenty years of Tasmania's nineteenth century. This work will be of interest to postal stationery collectors, postal historians and to those with a general interest in Tasmanian history.184 pages, A4, Hardcover, dust jacket, section stitched

Book An Archival Journey through the Qatar Peninsula

Download or read book An Archival Journey through the Qatar Peninsula written by Sue-Ann Harding and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-05 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book retrieves from the archives people, places and perspectives normally overlooked to tell an original and expansive history of the Qatar Peninsula, paying close attention to landscape and the natural world. The arc of the book moves geographically through the landscape and chronologically through selected sources, drawing on digitised maps, manuscripts, hydrographic surveys, government records, traveller accounts, early photographs, archaeological and ethnographic reports. While these are standard sources recruited by Qatar to tell its own singular, streamlined history, this book is a subversive reading of those sources. It braids together elusive and precarious stories – difficult to find, at risk of being lost, and never before brought together into a single volume – to write a more complicated story of place. Through them, we can reimagine a place that, like many in the world, works hard to control a limited set of stories about itself. Readers who know something about Qatar will be surprised by the book’s nuances and details. Readers who know little or nothing will be drawn in to discover that, even in the most out-of-the-way and inhospitable places, deserts are never empty.
