Download or read book Divine Impassibility written by Richard E. Creel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-06-21 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Richard Creel sets forth a thesis that offers a third way to approach divine impassibility. Defining impassibility as imperviousness to causal influence from external factors, Creel sketches a path between Aquinas and Hartshorne, by asserting that once this definition is accepted, one must still distinguish the various respects in which God is or is not impassible. Virtually no one would dispute that the divine nature is impassible. God will never cease to be God, no matter what happens in creation. With respect to the divine knowledge and will, however, there are conflicting views. Creel claims that God's will is impassible because God knows everything that can be accomplished by divine power. Yet, unlike Aquinas, Creel believes that God has this knowledge in virtue of a 'plenum' of possibilities eternally coexistent with the divine being. The absolute is not simply God, but rather God plus the 'plenum'. Creel suggests that God's knowledge is passible with respect to the contingent future actions of creatures. God knows these actions, therefore, not in their presentiality from all eternity, as Aquinas would hold, but only as they happen and become actual. God's will, however, remains immediately impassible because the divine will is ordered to possibilities, not actualities. God never has to wait until after we do something in order to decide his response to it. He has eternally decided his response to all that we might do. Ultimately God's feelings remain impassible, no matter what concrete decisions human beings make, because the basic intent of the divine plan for us is always achieved: we exercise our freedom to choose for or against God. God is impassible with respect to the divine nature, divine will, and divine feelings; but God is passible with respect to the divine knowledge of future contingent events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shade plants, also known as shade-tolerant or shade-loving plants, have evolved a suite of adaptations that allow them to thrive in environments characterized by reduced light intensity. These plants have developed various strategies to capture and utilize available light energy efficiently. We will explore the key features and mechanisms employed by shade plants to successfully adapt to low-light conditions. Light Harvesting Structures: Shade plants typically possess specialized adaptations in their leaf structures to optimize light capture. These adaptations often include larger, broader leaves with a larger surface area to capture diffuse light. Additionally, some shade plants exhibit a higher leaf chlorophyll content, enabling them to absorb and utilize light more efficiently. Light-Absorbing Pigments: Chlorophyll is the primary pigment responsible for photosynthesis in plants. Shade plants may contain higher concentrations of chlorophyll a and b to maximize their light absorption in low-light environments. This increased pigment content helps these plants make the most of the limited light available. Low-Light Photosynthetic Mechanisms: Shade plants have evolved specialized mechanisms to perform photosynthesis under low-light conditions. One such adaptation is the C3 photosynthesis pathway, which is more efficient than other pathways, such as C4 or CAM, under reduced light intensity. This ensures that shade plants can produce sugars and energy even in the shade. Light-Avoidance Responses: Shade plants often exhibit light-avoidance behaviors. For instance, they may orient their leaves to minimize self-shading, allowing them to capture as much light as possible from different angles. Some shade plants may also exhibit phototropism, bending toward the light source. Nutrient Efficiency: Shade-adapted plants tend to be more resource-efficient, as they often receive fewer nutrients due to decreased sunlight. They allocate resources judiciously, prioritize nutrient allocation to photosynthetic tissues, and may exhibit reduced growth rates compared to sun-loving plants. Adaptive Morphology: Some shade plants may display unique morphological adaptations, such as increased stem elongation (etiolation) to reach higher light levels or thinner, translucent leaves to maximize light penetration to lower leaf layers. Understory and Forest Floor Ecology: Many shade plants thrive in the understory of forests or in shaded areas of ecosystems. These environments often feature reduced competition for resources, as sun-loving species are less prevalent, allowing shade plants to establish themselves successfully. Tolerance to Low Light Stress: Shade plants have evolved mechanisms to cope with potential stressors associated with low-light conditions, such as higher susceptibility to pathogens, reduced water availability, and limited nutrient uptake. These adaptations may include enhanced disease resistance and efficient water and nutrient utilization. In conclusion, shade plants have evolved a range of adaptations at the structural, physiological, and ecological levels to thrive in low-light environments. These adaptations allow them to efficiently capture, utilize, and compete for available light, ensuring their survival and growth in shaded habitats. So, this book will tech you how to grow this plant, Scroll up and get new knowledge

Book Sunlight and Shade in the First Cities

Download or read book Sunlight and Shade in the First Cities written by Mary Shepperson and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of urbanism in Iraq occurred under the distinctive climatic conditions of the Mesopotamian plain; rainy winters and extremely hot summers profoundly affected the formation and development of these early cities. Sunlight and Shade in the First Cities explores the relationship between society, culture and lived experience through the way in which sunlight was manipulated in the urban built environment. Light is approached as both a physical phenomenon, which affects comfort and the practical usability of space, and as a symbolic phenomenon rich in social and religious meaning. Through the reconstruction of ancient urban light environments, to the extent possible from the archaeological remains, the location, timing and meaning of activities within early Mesopotamian cities become accessible. Sunlight is shown to have influenced the formation and symbolism of urban architecture and shaped the sensory experience of urban life. From cities as part of the sunlit landscape, this work progresses to consider city forms as a whole and then to the examination of architectural types; residential, sacred and palatial. Architectural analysis is complemented by analysis of contemporary textual sources, along with iconographic and artefactual evidence. The cities under detailed examination are limited to those on the Mesopotamian plain, focusing on the Early Dynastic periods up to the end of the second millennium BC.This volume demonstrates the utility of light as a tool with which to analyse, not just ancient Mesopotamian settlements, but the built environment of any past society, especially where provision of, or protection from sunlight critically affects life. The active influence of sunlight is demonstrated within Mesopotamian cities at every scale of analysis.
