Book Positron Profilometry

Download or read book Positron Profilometry written by Jerzy Dryzek and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of positron profilometry, specifically focusing on the analysis of defect depth distribution in materials. Positron profilometry plays a crucial role in understanding and characterizing defects in a wide range of materials, including metals, semiconductors, polymers, and ceramics. By analyzing the depth distribution of defects, researchers can gain insights into various material properties, such as crystal structure, defect density, and diffusion behavior. The author's extensive research spanning a period of two decades has primarily centered on subsurface zones. These regions, located beneath the surface and subjected to various surface processes, play a crucial role in generating defect distributions. Three experimental techniques and their data analysis are described in detail: a variable-energy positron beam (VEP) called sometimes a slow positron beam, a technique called implantation profile depth scanning (DSIP), and a sequential etching (SET) technique. The usability of these techniques is illustrated by many examples of measurements by the author and others.

Book Positron Spectroscopy of Solids

Download or read book Positron Spectroscopy of Solids written by Alfredo Dupasquier and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lifetime of a positron inside a solid is normally less than a fraction of nanosecond. This is a very short time on a human scale, but is long enough to enable the positron to visit an extended region of the material, and to sense the atomic and electronic structure of the environment. Thus, we can inject a positron in a sample to draw from it some signal giving us information on the microscopic properties of the material. This idea has been successfully developed in a number of positron-based techniques of physical analysis, with resolution in energy, momentum, or position. The complex of these techniques is what we call now positron spectroscopy of solids. The field of application of the positron spectroscopy extends from advanced problems of solid-state physics to industrial applications in the area of characterization of high-tech materials. This volume focuses the attention on the physics that can be learned from positron-based methods, but also frames those methods in a wider context including other experimental approaches. It can be considered as a textbook on positron spectroscopy of solids, the sort of book that the newcomer takes for his approach to this field, but also as a useful research tool for the expert.

Download or read book Positron Scattering in Gases written by John W. Humberston and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first conference in this series, devoted principally to the interaction of positrons in gases, was held at York University, Toronto, in July 1981 immediately preceding the XII ICPEAC in Gatlinburg, and the proceedings were published in the Canadian Journal of Physics, volume 60 (1982). So successful was this meeting that the decision was taken to hold a second one around the time of XIII ICPEAC in Berlin in 1983. London was clearly a convenient location but, rather than the obvious choice of University College London in central London, the Organising Committee decided that the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of Royal Holloway College would provide a more pleasant and intimate atmosphere for a small meeting. Even a small conference requires substantial sums of money to pay the expenses of invited speakers and when considering possible sources of funds the Organising Committee recognised that the intended format of the meeting and the international composition of the participants made it appropriate to apply to the NATO Science Committee for support under the Advanced Research Workshop Programme. This was one of the few successful applications made this year, and so it was that the conference became the 'NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Positron Scattering in Gases'. The Workshop, with approximately sixty participants, started after lunch on 19 July, 1983 and finished at mid-day on 23 July.

Book Microanalysis of Solids

    Book Details:
  • Author : B.G. Yacobi
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 1489914927
  • Pages : 459 pages

Download or read book Microanalysis of Solids written by B.G. Yacobi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this book is to systematically describe the basic principles of the most widely used techniques for the analysis of physical, structural, and compositional properties of solids with a spatial resolution of approxi mately 1 ~m or less. Many books and reviews on a wide variety of microanalysis techniques have appeared in recent years, and the purpose of this book is not to replace them. Rather, the motivation for combining the descriptions of various mi croanalysis techniques in one comprehensive volume is the need for a reference source to help identify microanalysis techniques, and their capabilities, for obtaining particular information on solid-state materials. In principle, there are several possible ways to group the various micro analysis techniques. They can be distinguished by the means of excitation, or the emitted species, or whether they are surface or bulk-sensitive techniques, or on the basis of the information obtained. We have chosen to group them according to the means of excitation. Thus, the major parts of the book are: Electron Beam Techniques, Ion Beam Techniques, Photon Beam Techniques, Acoustic Wave Excitation, and Tunneling of Electrons and Scanning Probe Microscopies. We hope that this book will be useful to students (final year undergrad uates and graduates) and researchers, such as physicists, material scientists, electrical engineers, and chemists, working in a wide variety of fields in solid state sciences.
