Book Positive and Negative Outcomes of Sexual Behaviors

Download or read book Positive and Negative Outcomes of Sexual Behaviors written by Eva S. Lefkowitz and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing healthy sexual behaviors is critical to adolescents’ wellbeing. While more emphasis has been on negative outcomes, there are broad positive implications for physical health, mental health, intimate relationships, and identity development. To fully understand the impact, we need to understand both. In addition, the impact of sexual behavior is not universal, but may differ based on individuals’ demographic, relational, contextual, and attitudinal factors. This volume provides a framework for understanding the complex role of sexual behavior in adolescents’ lives, with a specific focus on the roles of sexual minority status, internet-based sexual experiences, relationship context, and sexual learning through formal and informal sex education in determining the outcomes of sexual behavior. It provides: A nuanced, multidimensional understanding of the role of sexual behavior in shaping adolescents’ development and well-being Important directions for future research Recommendations for sexuality education, prevention, and intervention programs. This is the 144th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.

Book Social Cognitive Theory and Norms

Download or read book Social Cognitive Theory and Norms written by Kelly Marie Luoma and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals often learn sexual health information from entertainment television shows, but they also may learn and enact risky sexual behaviors seen on television. This experiment tested whether viewers are more likely to engage in sexual behaviors after seeing television characters model these behaviors and sought to determine whether this enactment of behavior is attributed to characters experiencing positive or negative emotional consequences as a result of their sexual behavior. Participants were randomly assigned to view either a television show episode that depicted a positive outcome of a "friends with benefits" relationship or one that depicted a negative outcome of a "friends with benefits" relationship. Males reported being more likely to engage in a "friends with benefits" relationship after viewing this type of relationship depicted on television. Therefore, people may be more likely to enact behaviors after viewing characters engage in them on television regardless of whether the characters experience positive or negative outcomes. Males' intentions to engage in a "friends with benefits" relationship also increased after viewing the negative outcome condition. This finding demonstrates that although the protagonist of a show may experience negative outcomes as a result of her behavior, viewers may interpret this outcome differently or identify more with other characters, which can increase their intentions to engage in the behavior. Therefore, having a character experience negative outcomes as a result of engaging in a behavior will not necessarily decrease viewers' intentions to engage in that behavior.

Book The Association Between Sexual Subjectivity and Sexual Health Outcomes Both Negative and Positive in a Sample of Women

Download or read book The Association Between Sexual Subjectivity and Sexual Health Outcomes Both Negative and Positive in a Sample of Women written by Julia Bond and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of psychosocial constructs such as assertiveness and self-efficacy has increasingly been acknowledged as an important component of research and interventions directed at young women’s sexual health. The female sexual subjectivity inventory (FSSI) was developed to measure five distinct factors of young women’s experiences of sexual pleasure and empowerment as agentic sexual beings: 1) sexual body esteem, 2) entitlement to sexual pleasure from a partner 3) entitlement to sexual pleasure from the self, 4) self-efficacy in achieving sexual pleasure from a partner, and 5) sexual self-reflection. Though previous research has found positive associations between higher scores on the FSSI and other constructs such as sexual well-being and condom use self-efficacy, no studies have explicitly evaluated the association between FSSI scores and adverse sexual health outcomes. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey of women affiliated with the University of Washington to assess the association between FSSI factors and the occurrence of three adverse sexual health outcomes in the prior 12 months: acquisition of an sexually transmitted infection, unwanted pregnancy, or taking emergency contraception (Plan B). We used multivariate logistic regression models to evaluate the association between each FSSI factor while controlling for age and estimated frequency of sexual activity. We also assessed the association between FSSI scores and self-reported orgasm frequency during partnered sexual activity. We did not find any statistically significant associations between mean score on any of the FSSI factors and adverse sexual health outcomes in the prior year. Results We found that all FSSI factors except for sexual self-reflection were positively associated with increased orgasm frequency. We further used the FSSI scale in a novel way to identify a population of women who are discordant on their levels of entitlement to pleasure from partner and self-efficacy in achieving sexual pleasure. Conclusions Though our primary analysis did not show statistically significant results, our study underscores the validity of the FSSI as a measure to assess psychosocial constructs relevant to young women’s ability to experience sexual pleasure with a partner. Our research also indicates that different FSSI factors may interact with each other to inform women’s sexual behavior, and implications for future research using this scale are discussed.

Book Positive Approaches to Optimal Relationship Development

Download or read book Positive Approaches to Optimal Relationship Development written by C. Raymond Knee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we get the most out of our close relationships? Research in the area of personal relationships continues to grow, but most prior work has emphasized how to overcome negative aspects. This volume demonstrates that a good relationship is more than simply the absence of a bad relationship, and that establishing and maintaining optimal relationships entails enacting a set of processes that are distinct from merely avoiding negative or harmful behaviors. Drawing on recent relationship science to explore issues such as intimacy, attachment, passion, sacrifice, and compassionate goals, the essays in this volume emphasize the positive features that allow relationships to flourish. In doing so, they integrate several theoretical perspectives, concepts, and mechanisms that produce optimal relationships. The volume also includes a section on intensive and abbreviated interventions that have been empirically validated to be effective in promoting the positive features of close relationships.

Book Patterns of Adolescent and Young Adult Sexual Behavior

Download or read book Patterns of Adolescent and Young Adult Sexual Behavior written by Kari M. Gloppen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While risky sexual behavior can lead to negative consequences such as sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy, sexual behavior also is a healthy part of human development. By understanding the social and cognitive processes that influence sexual behavior choices during adolescence and young adulthood, we will be better able to promote positive sexual health and reduce risky sexual behavior and its negative consequences, included sexually transmitted infection and unintended pregnancy. This dissertation examined three sets of questions related to sexual behavior during adolescence and young adulthood. The first study used structural equation modeling and found that the data supported many of the prosocial developmental paths described by the social development model, for example a positive family and school environment predicted prosocial norms and healthy beliefs, which in turn predicted a later age of sexual initiation. The second study used latent class analysis to identify five classes of sexual behavior from ages 19 to 23. The study showed that while young adult men and women exhibit similar patterns of sexual behavior, there were important differences in the levels of individual sexual risk behaviors within the behavior patterns and in the proportion of males and females estimated to be in the Higher Risky Sex class. This study also showed that risk and protective socialization processes during adolescence impact sexual behavior during young adulthood. The third study used the 5 identified latent classes of sexual behavior, and found that these classes differentially predict health and social outcomes at age 24. These studies have several implications, including providing support for enhancing prosocial environments at the family, school, and peer levels, providing insight into specific health messaging for young adults to improve their sexual health, and the importance of contextualizing sexual behavior as one component of overall health that is linked to other areas of a person's health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Council on Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity has defined sexual addiction as "...engaging in persistent and escalating patterns of sexual behavior acted out despite increasing negative consequences to self and others." Therefore, people addicted to sex continue to engage in certain sexual behaviors despite facing potential health risks, financial problems, shattered relationships, and even arrest. When sex becomes a problem, it can push people to do things they would not normally do if they were not suffering from an addiction. Behavioral addictions can be challenging to manage. The pages of this workbook are filled with assessments, activities, and journaling exercises that can help your clients or students overcome a sexual addiction and teach them essential skills aimed at helping them repair problems in their lives caused by a preoccupation with sex. The purpose of The Sex Addiction Workbook is to provide helping professionals with cognitive and behavioral assessments, tools, and exercises that can be utilized to treat the root psychological causes of a sex addiction. It is designed to help people identify and change negative, unhealthy thoughts and behaviors that may have led to sex addiction. The activities contained in this workbook can help participants identify the triggers that can lead to a preoccupation with sex and teach them ways to manage and overcome those triggers. The Sex Addiction Workbook will help participants to: Recognize that they are experiencing an addiction problem. Reflect and become aware of the behaviors that were part of and arose from the addiction. Build self-esteem in positive capabilities outside of sexual behavior. Understand the triggers for preoccupation with sex. Develop greater self-acceptance and the ability to change ineffective behaviors. Understand recurring patterns that indicate a sex disorder. Learn ways to live a new life without a preoccupation with sex. The Sex Addiction Workbook is a practical tool for teachers, counselors, and helping professionals in their work with people suffering with behavioral addictions. Depending on the role of the person using this workbook and the specific group's or individual's needs, the modules can be used either individually or as part of an integrated curriculum. The facilitator may choose to administer one activity to a group or administer some of the assessments over one or more days as a workshop. The Five Modules This workbook contains five separate modules of activity-based handouts that will help participants learn more about themselves and about their addiction to sex and sex-related behaviors. These modules serve as avenues for self-reflection and group experiences revolving around topics of importance in the lives of the participants in the group. The activities in this workbook are user-friendly and varied to provide a comprehensive way of analyzing, strengthening, and developing characteristics, skills, and attitudes for overcoming an addiction to sex. The activities in this workbook are completely reproducible and can be photocopied and/or revised for direct participant use. Module 1: Sex Addiction Behaviors Module 2: Social Aspects of a Sex Addiction Module 3: Escaping Emotional Pain Module 4: Loss of Control Module 5: A Hopeful Future

Book Sexual Risk Behaviors in College Women Perceived Norms Attitudes and Sexual Motives

Download or read book Sexual Risk Behaviors in College Women Perceived Norms Attitudes and Sexual Motives written by Kelly Rudolph and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One important developmental task of young adulthood is the formation of romantic partnerships and initiation of sexual relationships. Unfortunately, in navigating these key developmental tasks, college students may engage in sexual risk behaviors which could lead to negative physical, psychological, and social consequences. Prior research has shown that a substantial number of college women are participating in sexual risk behaviors, such as having one time sexual encounters, inconsistently using condoms, having multiple sequential and simultaneous sexual partners, and drinking heavily before sex. Despite this, only limited research has examined factors that predict and contribute to these sexual risk behaviors. Such work is necessary to develop programs to promote healthy sexual development and expression among college women. Prior research has supported the utility of the contingent consistency peer influence model (CCPIM) in predicting risky drinking among college women. This model posits that that perceived peer norms, actual peer norms, and personal attitudes are independent and key influences on adolescents and young adults' risky behavior. Additionally, prior work has supported the role of certain drinking motives in promoting risky drinking among college students. Similarly, a link between some sexual motives and sexual risk behavior has been established as well. Prior research has supported that certain sexual motives, such as coping and affirmation, predict engagement in sexual risk behaviors. The applicability of the CCPIM with the addition of sexual motives in predicting sexual risk behaviors has not previously been studied together, however. This thesis sought to evaluate the utility of the CCPIM in predicting sexual risk behaviors among college women. Further, the influence of two sexual motives: coping and affirmation, on risky sexual behavior were also examined. To accomplish these aims, 400 sexually active undergraduate women (mean age 18.5 years), were recruited through the ECU Psychology department participant management system to complete an online survey that assessed sexual risk behaviors, drinking behaviors, sexual attitudes, sexual motives, and perceived peer norms for sexual behaviors. Results supported that college women's perceived peer norms as well as coping and affirmation sexual motives significantly predicted sexual risk behaviors, while positive personal attitudes toward sex predicted less engagement in these behaviors. Implications of the findings include the importance both of college women's perception of peer norms for sexual risk behavior and their personal sexual motives as well as the potential protective role of holding positive attitudes toward sex. This highlights that for college women, the strongest component of the CCPIM is perception of peer norms, regardless of actual peer norms, and also highlights the role of sexual motives in sexual risk behaviors. This research suggests that norm corrective interventions could possibly be part of an effective intervention program to reduce college women's engagement in sexual risk behaviors. Further, for some women, sexual risk behaviors may be a result of maladaptive coping strategies and/or used as a means to boost self-esteem or desirability, supporting the potential importance of interventions addressing psychological distress and low self-esteem in also potentially addressing sexual risk. Additionally, future research should focus on expanding these findings to more diverse populations as well as the likely bidirectional relationships between perceived peer norms and risk behavior over time.

Book Is Two Always Better Than One

Download or read book Is Two Always Better Than One written by Megan Elizabeth Steele and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent risky sexual behaviors such as early sexual debut, low rates of condom use, and high rates of partner change are associated with a number of negative health and social outcomes including contracting sexual transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy. Utilizing a sample of 529 African American adolescents, this study examines the contributions of parenting behaviors and family structure as factors associated with engagement in risky sexual behavior. Participants reported few differences in mother's parenting across family structures. While fathers and relatives provided greater responsiveness on average than stepfathers. Variation in parenting fully explained differences in risky sexual behavior for males. Yet family structure differences persisted for females, with females in mother step-father homes continually engaging in greater mean risky sexual behavior than those in mother-father households even after accounting for parental responsiveness and demandingness. Implications for prevention and intervention are discussed.
