Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of American Women This book might almost be called Portraits of New England Women, since, with the exception of Miss Willard, all of the subjects studied in it were born in New England. As I had devoted a good many years to distinguished representatives of other parts of the country, I felt at liberty to confine my researches for a brief period to souls nearer home. In the study of women it is especially difficult to obtain satisfactory material, and material affecting the lives of New England women was most readily accessible to me. At the same time, of the seven New England characters here portrayed, at least three, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Margaret Fuller Ossoli, and Louisa May Alcott, are so thoroughly iden tified with the country at large that one hardly thinks of their birthplace. Abigail Adams, Mary Lyon, and Emily Dickinson are known to a great number of their countrywomen and Sarah Alden Ripley ought to be so. I hope, moreover, to follow this series with another, embracing prominent women of other sections. I am under deep obligation to various persons for assistance in my work. Mrs. Ripley's grandchildren have kindly supplied me with numerous letters, without which it would have been impossible to make an ade quate study of her. Miss Charlotte A. Hedge has lent me letters of Margaret Fuller to Dr. F. H. Hedge, and the Boston Public Library has placed its valuable Ossoli manuscripts at my disposal. Mount Holyoke College has enabled me to make use of a most interest ing collection of reminiscences of Mary Lyon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woman's Story, as Told by Twenty American Women: With Portraits, and Sketches of the Authors The woman's story as told by twenty American women is a composite picture of the representative fiction work of the female writers of the republic. It is one which depicts the types and characteristics of people who unitedly compose our young nation. The composite woman's picture is full of patriotic fire; of the fervor and faith of free institutions, and is distin guished by a zealous allegiance to the domestic quali ties of the people, which have found widest expression under our form of government. The difierences in population; the varieties of classes, and the broad distinctions in local coloring are vividly exhibited in the annals of American fiction, the largest contributors to which are women. The compilation represents the field of fiction, from the appearance of the first great American novel to the present day. Mrs. Stowe's sketch of New England life, which Opens the volume, was the forerunner of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and is as graphic 3 pen-picture of the phase of life it represents as was her famous novel of slavery. Miss Alcott's Transcendental Wild Oats is the truest delineation of the salient features of the Transcendental movement yet made, and is as striking in its faithfulness as is Mrs. Stowe's Uncle Lot. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Woman of the Century: Fourteen Hundred-Seventy Biographical Sketches Accompanied by Portraits of Leading American Women in All Walks of Life Abbatt, Miss Agnes Dean, artist, born in New York City. A3rd June. 1847. She still resides in her native city. Her paternal ancestors were English, and she is of French Huguenot descent on her mother's side. Her great-grandfather and his family came from England to this country in the latter part of the last century. They settled in what is now Pleasant Valley, Dutchess county, N. Y., where D. Abbart, the father of Agnes, was born. He passed his life in business in Poughkeepsie, Philadelphia and New York. Miss Abbatt's grandmother, Mrs. Dean, an English woman, was an art amateur of unusual talent and accomplishments. Of her children, nearly all possessed the talent for painting, but of all the descendants Agnes alone has adopted art as a profession. She showed in early childhood a marked talent for drawing. But it was not till 1873 that she took up the study of art as a profes sion. In that year she entered the Cooper Union art-school. She won a medal for a head of Ajax in the first year of her studies, and on the merit of that achievement she was admitted to the art school of the National Academy of Design in New York. So decided was her progress that, at the end of the first year in that institution her first full length drawing was one of those selected for exhi bitiou. As it was not her intention to become a figure-painter, she left the Academy and devoted herself to the study of landscape painting. That branch of art she studied for several years under R. Swain Gifl'ord, N. A, and james D. Smillie, N. A., constantly showing new powers and making rapid progress. At the same time she was gratify ing her tastes in another direction, and she won distinction as a water - colorist and also as a flower painter. Her first pictures, two panels of flowers, were shown in the exhibition of the Brooklyn Art Club in 1875, where they attracted much atten tion and found purchasers. Her next picture.
