Book Portraits at the Zoo Classic Reprint

Download or read book Portraits at the Zoo Classic Reprint written by Ellen Velvin and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits at the Zoo The Cheetah, or hunting leopard, is the most interesting of all the cat tribe. It is found in Arabia, Mesopotamia, Syria, and in West and Southern India; also in Abyssinia, Senegal, and South Africa. The reason that the Cheetah is called the hunting leopard is because 800 years before the Christian Era it was used in the hunting field in India, exactly as it is still used there in the present day. In the British Museum, in some of the Assyrian carvings, you will see a Cheetah catching and killing an antelope. There is another carved stone in the Louvre, in Paris, which also shows that the Cheetah must have been known to the Greeks and Romans. In the East, the hunting qualities of this wild animal were very soon discovered, and the natives trained it carefully to catch antelopes, gazelles, nilgai, deer, and other wild animals. It was found, however, that the Cheetahs must be caught full grown and wild, in order to train them to make good hunters; all efforts to train Cheetah cubs proved useless. This was supposed to be because they had not seen their parents capture and kill their prey. But in Africa the Cheetah is only valued for its skin. The great tribal chiefs, African Kings, and other grand personages, dress themselves up in these skins, and consider themselves very fine indeed. The Cheetah is a tall, slender, graceful creature, with long legs, small loins, a broad chest, and a long tail. Unlike the eagles, the males are equal in size to, if not larger than, the females. Their powers of sight are remarkably keen, and their sense of smell is also well developed. Book excerpt: In her eye-opening, ruthlessly honest account, Darcy Lockman shares the stress, frustratation, and exhilaration of her clinical training as a psychologist in the midst of institutional dysfunction at Brooklyn’s Kings County Hospital. After leaving her career in magazine journalism to become a psychotherapist, Darcy Lockman confronted a slew of challenges including numerous troubling cases, struggles to provide the poor and chronically ill with adequate care, and the general and sometimes humorous indignities of being a trainee in any field. This compelling memoir will by turns deeply move, shock, and enrage you. Book A Preliminary Plan for the Los Angeles Zoological Park and Aquarium Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Preliminary Plan for the Los Angeles Zoological Park and Aquarium Classic Reprint written by Charles Lincoln Edwards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-18 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Preliminary Plan for the Los Angeles Zoological Park and Aquarium No zoo would be complete without the opportunity given the children to ride upon ponies and donkeys, or even better, to have the thrill of swinging up on the back of a kind old elephant, or go jogging along, clinging to the hump of a camel. There will be a real necessity for saddle-horses and burros to carry adults, as well as children, over the comfortably graded trails from which the various groups of animals may be seen to the best advantage. The zoo and aquarium should constitute an important out of-door laboratory for work in natural history. There should be a supervisor of nature study in the public schools who will lead the teachers in the instruction of the children by means of field excursions and lectures illustrated by stereopticon slides and motion pictures. Such topics might be considered as the geographical distribution of animals, their native surround ings and homes, and the peculiarities in structure which adapt them for survival in the intense struggle for existence. Book The Man Who Ate the Zoo

Download or read book The Man Who Ate the Zoo written by Richard Girling and published by Random House. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Buckland was an extraordinary man – surgeon, natural historian, popular lecturer, bestselling writer, museum curator, and a conservationist before the concept even existed. Eccentric, revolutionary, prolific, he was one of the nineteenth century’s most improbable geniuses. His lifelong passion was to discover new ways to feed the hungry. Rhinoceros, crocodile, puppy-dog, giraffe, kangaroo, bear and panther all had their chance to impress, but what finally - and, eventually, fatally - obsessed him was fish. Forgotten now, he was one of the most original, far-sighted and influential natural scientists of his time, held as high in public esteem as his great philosophical enemy, Charles Darwin.

Book The Digital Photography Book

Download or read book The Digital Photography Book written by Scott Kelby and published by Rocky Nook, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:

Learn how to take professional-quality photographs using the same tricks today’s top photographers use (surprisingly, it’s easier than you’d think)!

This is a completely, totally updated version of the #1 best-selling digital photography book of all time! It’s the award winning, worldwide smash hit, written by Scott Kelby, that’s been translated into dozens of different languages.

Here’s how Scott describes this book’s brilliant premise: “If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, ‘Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, with the background out of focus?,’ I wouldn’t stand there and give you a photography lecture. In real life, I’d just say, ‘Put on your zoom lens, set your f-stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.’ That’s what this book is all about: you and I out shooting where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I’ve learned just like I would with a friend—without all the technical explanations and techie photo speak.”

This isn’t a book of theory—full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. This is a book on which button to push, which setting to use, and when to use it. With over 200 of the most closely guarded photographic “tricks of the trade,” this book gets you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos every time.

Each page covers a single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you’ll learn another pro setting, tool, or trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. If you’re tired of taking shots that look “okay,” and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, “Why don’t my shots look like that?” then this is the book for you.
