Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Gothic tale inspired by the real-life Lysbeth Anthonijsen. The year is 1676. We meet Lysbeth Luanda, a second-generation African freedwoman in New York, the former Dutch colony seized by the English, who, in a mere decade, have passed more cruel and oppressive restrictions on the free African community already living in the colony. After being orphaned at age 13, Lysbeth is forced to restart life all on her own, while working as a tavern waitress in Dutch and German-owned taverns along the banks of the Delaware and Hudson rivers. In this multinational milieu, she learns cosmopolitan skills and street philosophy from lovable lowlifes, brash buccaneers, African dreamers, indigenous heroines, and globetrotting Scandinavians. Lysbeth eventually finds a mentor in a Sephardi Jewish medical doctor from Curaçao, under whom she studies surgery and anatomy. As the gloomy autumn season begins in 1676, the gruesome murders of 3 European women, by an unknown assailant in the isolated village of Sleepy Hollow, shocks the whole of New York. Lysbeth's mentor convinces the New York High Sheriff to appoint Lysbeth to go investigate the victims’ inexplicable cause of death and bring back a written coroner's report. After an initial frosty reception by the villagers of Sleepy Hollow, Lysbeth gains new allies who assist her in her investigation. She must now work quickly to map the murderous pattern of the Sleepy Hollow serial killer before it’s too late...
Download or read book The Sinister Side written by James Hall and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-23 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sinister Side is the first book to detail the richness and subtlety of left-right symbolism since the Renaissance, and to show how it was a catalyst for some of the greatest works of visual art from Leonardo and Michelangelo to Rembrandt and Picasso. Traditionally, the left side was regarded as evil, weak, and worldly, but with the Renaissance, artists began to represent the left side as the side that represented authentic human feelings and especially love. Writers including Lorenzo de' Medici, Michelangelo, and Winckelmann hailed the supreme moral and aesthetic beauty of the left side. Images of lovers foreground the left side of the body, emphasizing its refinement and sensitivity. In the late nineteenth century, with the rise of interest in the occult and in spiritualism, the left side becomes associated with the taboo and with the unconscious. James Hall's insightful discussion of left and right symbolism helps us to see how the self and the mind were perceived during these periods, and gives us a new key to understanding art in its social and intellectual context.

Download or read book The Portraitist written by Steven Nadler and published by Atlas Contact. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword Marrigje Rikken, Head of Collections and Exhibitions – Frans Hals Museum. Frans Hals was one of the greatest portrait painters in history, and his style transformed ideas and expectations about what portraiture can do and what a painting should look like. Hals was a member of the great trifecta of Dutch Baroque painters alongside Rembrandt and Vermeer, and he was the portraitist of choice for entrepreneurs, merchants, professionals, theologians, intellectuals, militiamen, and even his fellow artists in the Dutch Golden Age. His works, with their visible brush strokes and bold execution, lacked the fine detail and smooth finish common among his peers, and some dismissed his works as sloppy and unfinished. But for others, they were fresh and exciting, filled with a sense of the sitter’s animated presence captured with energy and immediacy. This is the first full-length biography of Hals in many years. It offers a view into seventeenth-century Haarlem and this culturally rich era of the Dutch Republic. Nadler tells the story not only of Hals’s life, but also of the artistic, social, political, and religious worlds in which he lived and worked. Foreword Marrigje Rikken, Head of Collections and Exhibitions – Frans Hals Museum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1660, Amsterdam is the trading and map-printing capital of the world. Anneke van Brug is one of the colorists paid to enhance black-and-white maps for a growing number of collectors. Her artistic talent brings her to the attention of the Blaeu printing house, and she begins to color for a rich merchant, Willem de Groot. But Anneke is not content to simply embellish the work of others; she longs to create maps of her own. Cartography, however, is the domain of men—so it is in secret that she borrows the notes her father made on a trip to Africa in 1642 and sets about designing a new map. Anneke hopes to convince the charismatic de Groot to use his influence to persuade Blaeu to include her map in the Atlas Maior, which will be the largest and most expensive publication of the century. But family secrets, infidelity, and murder endanger her dream. Will her map withstand these threats, or will it be forever lost?
