Book Real Photo Postcard Guide

Download or read book Real Photo Postcard Guide written by Robert Bogdan and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Real Photo Postcard Guide is an informative, comprehensive, and practical treatment of this wildly popular American phenomenon that dominated the United States photographic market during the first third of the twentieth century. Robert Bogdan and Todd Weseloh draw on extensive research and observation to address all aspects of the photo postcard from its history, origin, and cultural significance to practical matters like dating, purchasing, condition, and preservation. Illustrated with over 350 exceptional photo postcards taken from archives and private collections across the country, the scope of the Real Photo Postcard Guide spans technical considerations of production, characteristics of superior images, collecting categories, and methods of research for dating photo postcards and investigating their photographers. In a broader sense, the authors show how "real photo postcards" document the social history of America. From family outings and workplace awards to lynchings and natural disasters, every image captures a moment of American cultural history from the society that generated them. Bogdan and Weseloh’s book provides an admirable integration of informative text and compelling photographic illustrations. Collectors, archivists, photographers, photo historians, social scientists, and anyone interested in the visual documentation of America will find the Real Photo Postcard Guide indispensable.

Book A Pictorial History of Highway 99

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning from the early 1900s through the 1960's, this nostalgic ride through Northern California and Oregon is one of the most highly visual histories ever written on U. S. Highway 99. Vintage postcard images depict how the crudely constructed Pacific Highway transitioned into the modern and paved U. S. Highway 99, only to be mostly abandoned when the new interstate opened. Traversing a myriad of landscapes, Highway 99 meanders through quaint towns and big cities, past towering pines and snow-capped mountains as mighty rivers gush through steep rugged canyons toward the fertile valleys of Oregon. Adding to the grandeur of this scenic route are iconic landmarks such as Mt. Shasta, Mt. McLoughlin, and Mt. Hood. Mostly abandoned stretches of the old highway reveal the hauntingly sad remains of deserted motels, gas stations, and tourist spots, their images lovingly preserved. Learn why the Pacific Highway gets confused with the Pacific Coast Highway. Learn how Interstate 5 evolved from a crude one-lane dirt road. Learn how U. S. Highway 99 became historically designated. Learn how travelers transitioned from tent camping to cozy motels. Learn the perils and predicaments of early highway travel. Learn why Mom & Pop became a big part of roadside businesses. Contains more than 600 rare roadside images

Book excerpt: **A New York Times Bestseller!** Based on the wildly popular Instagram account, Subpar Parks features both the greatest hits and brand-new content, all celebrating the incredible beauty and variety of America’s national parks juxtaposed with the clueless and hilarious one-star reviews posted by visitors. Subpar Parks, both on the popular Instagram page and in this humorous, informative, and collectible book, combines two things that seem like they might not work together yet somehow harmonize perfectly: beautiful illustrations and informative, amusing text celebrating each national park paired with the one-star reviews disappointed tourists have left online. Millions of visitors each year enjoy Glacier National Park, but for one visitor, it was simply "Too cold for me!" Another saw the mind-boggling vistas of Bryce Canyon as "Too spiky!" Never mind the person who visited the thermal pools at Yellowstone National Park and left thinking, “Save yourself some money, boil some water at home.” Featuring more than 50 percent new material, the book will include more depth and insight into the most popular parks, such as Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Acadia National Parks; anecdotes and tips from rangers; and much more about author Amber Share's personal love and connection to the outdoors. Equal parts humor and love for the national parks and the great outdoors, it's the perfect gift for anyone who loves to spend time outside as well as have a good read (and laugh) once they come indoors.

Download or read book Maine Coast Postcards written by Joyce K. Bibber and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retired from publishing The New England Homestead in 1899, George Storrs Graves took up photography and soon began to print his best pictures on postcards. Captured in this exciting collection are images of Maines scenic coastline as it appeared early in the 20th century, through the eyes of a successful businessman and talented photographer. Graves recognized that people wanted to see their hometowns in print, and he photographed everything from cottage-rimmed shorelines to commercial establishments. He and his wife spent summer months on the coast of Maine, at Small Point in Phippsburg and near West Harpswell. He traveled by foot, small ship, and steamship to both popular and little-known locales along the coast; his pictures depict the sea in all of its moods. The images in this collection were taken c. 1907 to 1914 and include areas from Cape Elizabeth to Monhegan. Resorts that flourished during the summer months are depicted, including a one-time resort at Popham Beach. View early fishing vessels and the scenery of Casco Bay, including unusual shots of the Harpswell shoreline, in this previously unpublished collection of the postcards of George S. Graves.

Book Lost Portland Oregon

Download or read book Lost Portland Oregon written by Val C. Ballestrem and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Portland has grown and changed, so has its architectural landscape. Once prominent landmarks have disappeared--the Marquam Building collapsed during 1912 renovations, the massive chamber of commerce building became a parking lot and the Corbett Building became a shopping mall. The city skyline was shaped by architects like Justus F. Krumbein and David L. Williams, only to drastically change in the face of urban renewal and the desire for modernization. Discover the stories behind some of Portland's most iconic buildings, including the Beth Israel Synagogue and the first East Side High School, both lost to fire. Join historian Val C. Ballestrem as he explores the city's architectural heritage from the 1890s to the present, as well as the creative forces behind it.

Download or read book The Postcard s Radical Openness written by Mariluz Restrepo and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Postcard’s Radical Openness offers a groundbreaking exploration of what this multifaceted, double-sided open card entails and how it has affected our being in the world. With a holistic approach, it focuses on studying the postcard’s specific way of being and performing, a particular ontology that opens up what is constitutively implicated in such an apparently trivial artifact. The book, organized into four parts, meticulously unveils the postcard’s political, technological, aesthetic, and ethical dimensions, ending with a coda correlating the postcard’s radical openness to G. Klimt’s painting, Nuda Veritas (1899) in reference to the scope of truth. By examining the postcard’s complex worldwide history, its socio-cultural significance, and its global effect, the book reveals hidden stories shedding light on its impact on photography, printing, marketing, trade, and business practices and exposes the aesthetic, communicative, and ethical qualities that lie behind the enormous success of postcards at the turn of the 20th century. This comprehensive study is positioned as a thought-provoking invitation to scholars and students interested in material culture, media studies, and human interactions, as well as to history enthusiasts, art lovers, and postcard collectors. Offering a distinctive contribution, the book not only fills a void in the literature but also encourages readers to question and reflect on the transformative power inherent in the postcard's 'radical openness,' presenting a novel and unparalleled analysis of this seemingly trivial yet culturally significant object.

Book Postcard America

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeffrey L. Meikle
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2016-01-20
  • ISBN : 0292726619
  • Pages : 521 pages

Download or read book Postcard America written by Jeffrey L. Meikle and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Great Depression through the early postwar years, any postcard sent in America was more than likely a “linen” card. Colorized in vivid, often exaggerated hues and printed on card stock embossed with a linen-like texture, linen postcards celebrated the American scene with views of majestic landscapes, modern cityscapes, roadside attractions, and other notable features. These colorful images portrayed the United States as shimmering with promise, quite unlike the black-and-white worlds of documentary photography or Life magazine. Linen postcards were enormously popular, with close to a billion printed and sold. Postcard America offers the first comprehensive study of these cards and their cultural significance. Drawing on the production files of Curt Teich & Co. of Chicago, the originator of linen postcards, Jeffrey L. Meikle reveals how photographic views were transformed into colorized postcard images, often by means of manipulation—adding and deleting details or collaging bits and pieces from several photos. He presents two extensive portfolios of postcards—landscapes and cityscapes—that comprise a representative iconography of linen postcard views. For each image, Meikle explains the postcard’s subject, describes aspects of its production, and places it in social and cultural contexts. In the concluding chapter, he shifts from historical interpretation to a contemporary viewpoint, considering nostalgia as a motive for collectors and others who are fascinated today by these striking images.

Book Trouble in the Camera Club Large Print 16pt

Download or read book Trouble in the Camera Club Large Print 16pt written by Don Pyle and published by ReadHowYouWant. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trouble in the Camera Club features over 300 photographs by Don Pyle and another 200 images of related ephemera from the earliest days of Toronto's punk music scene, featuring early gigs by Toronto bands like The Viletones, Teenage Head, The Curse, The Diodes, and The Ugly, and visiting punks the Ramones, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, The Clash, Vibrators, The Stranglers, and other artists influential to the punk movement including Bryan Ferry, David Bowie, and Cheap Trick. Starting in 1976, at age 14, Don Pyle witnessed and photographed some of the earliest gigs of Toronto punk acts and many of the artists whose sensibilities aligned with this new, festering subculture. According to Steven Leckie of The Viletones, Pyle's photographs "made everyone look heroic, as good as Annie Leibovitz and Linda McCartney." In 1977, Pyle bought a 35mm camera and joined his high school's camera club to learn how to develop and print, and to get free chemicals for processing. His trial - and - error education in photography resulted in a collection of images that, 30 - something years later, are as much historic document as they are pictures of an under - represented and significant period in Toronto's musical cultural development. Scratched, water - marked, and dusty negatives were restored to reveal his hidden history of the revolution. Numerous artists that have since passed away are captured in this book in their creative prime, frozen in youthful self - absorbed beauty. These are photos taken by a kid in awe of what he was seeing and who was pressed against the stage at every gig, not by a "professional" who observed from the sidelines. Trouble in the Camera Club is a one - of - a - kind photo - documentary of this golden moment - the birth of punk.

Book Snapshots and Short Notes

Download or read book Snapshots and Short Notes written by Kenneth Wilson and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snapshots and Short Notes examines the photographic postcards exchanged during the first half of the twentieth century as illustrated, first-hand accounts of American life. Almost immediately after the introduction of the generic postcard at the turn of the century, innovations in small, accessible cameras added black and white photographs to the cards. The resulting combination of image and text emerged as a communication device tantamount to social media today. Postcard messages and photographs tell the stories of ordinary lives during a time of far-reaching technological, demographic, and social changes: a family’s new combine harvester that could cut 40 acres a day; a young woman trying to find work in a man’s world; the sight of an airplane in flight. However, postcards also chronicled and shared hardship and tragedy––the glaring reality of homesteading on the High Plains, natural disasters, preparations for war, and the struggles for racial and gender equality. With a meticulous eye for detail, painstaking research, and astute commentary, Wilson surveys more than 160 photographic postcards, reproduced in full color, that provide insights into every aspect of life in a time not far removed from our own.

Book PostSecret

  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2005-11-29
  • ISBN : 0060899190
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book PostSecret written by Frank Warren and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2005-11-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project that captured a nation's imagination. The instructions were simple, but the results were extraordinary. "You are invited to anonymously contribute a secret to a group art project. Your secret can be a regret, fear, betrayal, desire, confession, or childhood humiliation. Reveal anything -- as long as it is true and you have never shared it with anyone before. Be brief. Be legible. Be creative." It all began with an idea Frank Warren had for a community art project. He began handing out postcards to strangers and leaving them in public places -- asking people to write down a secret they had never told anyone and mail it to him, anonymously. The response was overwhelming. The secrets were both provocative and profound, and the cards themselves were works of art -- carefully and creatively constructed by hand. Addictively compelling, the cards reveal our deepest fears, desires, regrets, and obsessions. Frank calls them "graphic haiku," beautiful, elegant, and small in structure but powerfully emotional. As Frank began posting the cards on his website, PostSecret took on a life of its own, becoming much more than a simple art project. It has grown into a global phenomenon, exposing our individual aspirations, fantasies, and frailties -- our common humanity. Every day dozens of postcards still make their way to Frank, with postmarks from around the world, touching on every aspect of human experience. This extraordinary collection brings together the most powerful, personal, and beautifully intimate secrets Frank Warren has received -- and brilliantly illuminates that human emotions can be unique and universal at the same time.
