Book Concrete Roads and Pavements Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concrete Roads and Pavements Classic Reprint written by E. S. Hanson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Roads and Pavements The first edition of this book came out just a year ago and was so well received that the first printing was sold before all the books came from the bindery. A second printing, with a few slight changes and corrections, was then put on the press and has been sold out some time ago. Hence the writer has been led to believe that there is a large demand for information on the subject of concrete roads and pavements, and he has therefore derived considerable enjoyment from the preparation of the present complete revision of the book, in the hope that by this means he may be able to add a small part to the betterment of this rapidly developing branch of the concrete industry. The book has been expanded from thirteen chapters in the original volume to twenty chapters in this revision, and from 227 pages to 338 pages. Entire new subjects have been introduced in this volume, such as Chapter XIX on the promotion of concrete roadways. Then, too, some topics which were merely given a paragraph in the original edition are now expanded into chapters. In each case it may be said, also, that the work has been brought completely down to date and that such advances in practice as have been developed during the past year are included in this volume. The book is, in large part, frankly a compilation, and the effort has been to collect into convenient handbook size everything of value which is so far known on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oil-Mixed Portland Cement Concrete The enormous growth of the American Portland cement industry, with. Its production Of 7 barrels Of cement in 1910 and 7 1 barrels in 1911, is striking evidence Of the widespread use Of this deservedly popular material of construction. Combined with sand and stone or gravel in the correct proportions and mixed with the proper amount of water, the resultant product - concrete - is a structural material of perhaps more universal adaptation than any other material now in use. Its application to foundations for heavy machinery, to dams, walls, bridge piers, tunnels, subways, and build ing blocks is well known. When properly reinforced with steel, its use is even more widely extended to the construction Of bridges, vats, sewers, water conduits, and numerous other classes of construction. The farmer has found concrete to be Of material benefit to him in building various farm structures which were formerly made Of more perishable materials._ Thus, when reinforced with steel wire or rods, fence posts may be made with an interminable life and at very low. Cost. It is also exceedingly well adapted to the construction Of water tanks, cisterns, silos, pavements, floors, buildings, feeding troughs, etc. Simplicity and ease of manufacture and manipulation in construction great strength and durability, and comparatively low cost are some of the considerations which render its application so universal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete in Highway Construction: A d104-Book for Highway Engineers and Supervisors The development of manufacture and of agriculture, which require proper transportation facilities not only on the railroads but to the points of ship ment and distribution, has stimulated a widespread interest and called national attention to the necessity for better pavements and for highway constructions of a more permanent and durable character. This demand, as well as the necessity for reducing the expense of repairs incident to automobile traffic, has brought to the forefront the use of concrete to produce permanent construction, not only for sidewalks and pavements, but for highway structures, such as bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and the many smaller details, the repairs to which are continually vexing the City and Town Engineer and the Highway Commissioner. The purpose of the present volume, then, is to present to those in charge of street and highway construction and maintenance, examples of work which have been satisfactorily performed, and, further, to give drawings and designs made especially for The atlas Portland Cement Company, either as reproductions of existing structures, from drawings and photographs kindly furnished by the local authorities, or as original designs prepared by expert engineers at the request of the atlas Portland Cement Company. Book Portland Cement Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portland Cement The present period of the German invasion of our cement market 15 an ominous one for British cement manufacturers. A Portland cement is being put upon our market which in quality equals, if not excels, in some instances, the average product shipped from many of our best known works. The price of the foreign cement is one the English manufacturer IS reluctant, if able, to sell at; and large contracts in this country are being secured by our foreign rivals. The history of the manufacture of Portland cement may be put into a very short space as regards the present inferior position of the average English works. Portland cement was first invented in this country about 1756; Some years later our Continental neighbours started cement manufacture on sound scientific principles. Since this time our foreign rivals have been forging ahead. They have been successful in solving problems of vital importance in the more modern manufacture of a first-class quality product, and at prices which enable them to ship cement, not only to this country but to the very centres of the export and colonial trade which English manufacturers once thoroughly relied upon as their own market. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expansion and Contraction of Concrete and Concrete Roads White and the earlier investigators made tests on the _change in length of neat cement and mortar with specially designed micro meters on very small specimens, White's being only 4 inches in length. Obviously it would be impo-ssible'to use such small test pieces as these to determine the expansion and contraction of concrete containing coarse aggregates, and the type adopted was a column 8 inches square and 5 feet high. The column form of specimen was used to permit the free expansion of one end, in this way preventing friction from affecting the accuracy of the measurements.
