Book Woman s View From a Porthole

Download or read book Woman s View From a Porthole written by Sindi Giancoli and published by . This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woman's View from a Porthole is the true story of a woman's rise to Chief Steward on worldwide commercial fishing vessels, a feat seldom achieved by anyone, much less a woman. Author Sindi Giancoli spent thirty-five years as a Chief Steward for American Seafoods Company and other commercial fishing companies in Alaska and the Bering Sea. She survived high seas, gale-force winds, seasickness, illnesses, death of crewmates, stress, homesickness, bunking together, broken toilets, power outages, hauling fish, food fights, discrimination, sexism, and getting along with others despite wildly diverse backgrounds - all this while being tossed around on the high seas cooking. Through multiple trials, joys, sorrows, and struggles, she went from being a scared, timid young woman to becoming a woman of achievement, confidence, and strength in an industry that was, and to a certain extent still is, primarily male-dominated. She had to build a strong backbone to win the respect of her male counterparts while leading them. She succeeded in doing this and became part of what would be termed years later as "a very special generation of women" who claimed ownership of their work at sea. This story is a unique look into a world most people will never see. Women's View from a Porthole is a true account of the author's adventures and a riveting story of survival. Packed with full-color photographs of the author's time at sea, with a foreword from Sigurd Jonny "Sig" Hansen, captain of the fishing vessel Northwestern, that has been featured in the documentary television series "Deadliest Catch," this book is a page-turner.

Her talent for small holes in space will not help her here. Her stubbornness versus her father’s evil. Who will win?

Book excerpt: Park ranger Anna Pigeon returns, in a mystery that unfolds in and around Lake Superior, in whose chilling depths sunken treasure comes with a deadly price. In her latest mystery, Nevada Barr sends Ranger Pigeon to a new post amid the cold, deserted, and isolated beauty of Isle Royale National Park, a remote island off the coast of Michigan known for fantastic deep-water dives of wrecked sailing vessels. Leaving behind memories of the Texas high desert and the environmental scam she helped uncover, Anna is adjusting to the cool damp of Lake Superior and the spirits and lore of the northern Midwest. But when a routine application for a diving permit reveals a grisly underwater murder, Anna finds herself 260 feet below the forbidding surface of the lake, searching for the connection between a drowned man and an age-old cargo ship. Written with a naturalist's feel for the wilderness and a keen understanding of characters who thrive in extreme conditions, A Superior Death is a passionate, atmospheric page-turner.

Book excerpt: Strategy and reality collide in Peter Fey’s gripping history of aircraft carrier USS Oriskany’s three deployments to Vietnam with Carrier Air Wing 16 (CVW-16). Its tours coincided with the most dangerous phases of Operation Rolling Thunder, the ill-fated bombing campaign against North Vietnam, and accounted for a quarter of all the naval aircraft lost during Rolling Thunder—the highest loss rate of any carrier air wing during Vietnam. The Johnson administration’s policy of gradually applied force meant that Oriskany arrived on station just as previous restrictions were lifted and bombing raids increased. As a result CVW-16 pilots paid a heavy price as they ventured into areas previously designated “off limits” by Washington DC. Named after one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War, the Oriskany lived up to its name. After two years of suffering heavy losses, the ship caught fire—a devastating blow given the limited number of carriers deployed. With only three months allotted for repairs, Oriskany deployed a third and final time and ultimately lost more than half of its aircraft and more than a third of its pilots. The valor and battle accomplishments displayed by Oriskany’s aviators are legendary, but the story of their service has been lost in the disastrous fray of the war itself. Fey portrays the Oriskany and its heroes in an indelible memorial to the fallen of CVW-16 in hopes that the lessons learned from such strategic disasters are not forgotten in today’s sphere of war-bent politics.
