Book Porsche The Racing 914s

Download or read book Porsche The Racing 914s written by Roy Smith and published by Veloce Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are those still today who see the Porsche 914 model as a 'funny little car,' compared to the immortal 911. Granted, in its day professional Rally drivers were not keen on the 914: they were nervous driving it at the limit. Yet the records show that 914s were driven to at least 41 class wins, and at least 71 positions on the other two steps of the podium in Regional, National, and International Rallies. Racing on the circuits of Europe, 914s came home first in their class, and even took overall victory many times. In the USA, in IMSA GTU championship, in nationals, and internationals, it was the same story - and that's not counting the multitude of SCCA regional races. The 914 first raced in 1970 ... the last? Who knows: even now they're still used in the USA's SCCA GT classes. 'Porsche - the Racing 914s' is a study in pictures, statistics, factory information, and interviews, that will show the Porsche 914 in a whole new light.

Book excerpt: For half a century, Porsche automobiles have been favorites of race fans and drivers in endurance events, rallies, hill climbs, Trans Am, Can-Am, and GT racing. In addition to color photography of the cars today and archival race images depicting the cars and top drivers from the annals of motorsport, the author presents the histories of such legendary Porsches as the 550 Spyder, a customer version of which gained notoriety as the car in which James Dean died; the open-wheel 718/2 with which Porsche unsuccessfully contested Formula 1 in 1959 and 1960; the 904 GTS that dominated European circuits in 1964 and 1965; the 917's which in 1972 and 1973 halted McLaren's Can-Am cakewalk; the 1976 Martini-liveried 935; the pair of Rothman-sponsored 959's that easily swept Paris-Dakar in 1986; and today's successful 911 GT cars.

The 914 rose from a marriage of convenience of Volkswagen and Porsche, because both companies wanted a small, modern and affordable sports car in their product range, but for little cost. Thus it was decided to combine the skills of both manufacturers. The result was a light mid-engine sports car with a lively road performance and even 50 years after its launch, it pleases the eye with a fresh design. Back then it was often ridiculed as a 'housewife Porsche' or 'Volks-Porsche', but now, the 914 has come out of the shadow of its big brother the 911 and has a huge fan base; today it lives on in the Boxster and Cayman models. This volume includes: the result of thorough research in the Porsche and VW archives; rich photography; all technical data; development, production, model history and racing appearances.

Book Corvette Racing

Download or read book Corvette Racing written by David Kimble and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chevy’s Corvette is without question one of the most recognized sports cars in the world. Since its introduction at GM’s Motorama, Corvettes have been favorites for fans and drivers in a wide variety of racing venues, including endurance events, hillclimbs, Trans-Am, drag racing, and GT Racing. For six decades, Corvettes have battled and defeated some of the the biggest names in the sports car world—Ferrari, Porsche, Cobra, Jaguar—at storied road courses like Le Mans, Daytona, the Nürburgring, Sebring, and Laguna Seca.Beginning with the Real McCoy, a Zora Arkus-Duntov special raced at Sebring in 1956, this book draws on the history of factory-sponsored and private racing efforts, chronicling the history of the various Vettes that have been put to the test as racing machines. Noted automotive writer and renowned artist David Kimble delves deep into Vette’s on-track history to provide the most thorough Corvette racing history ever published. Corvette Racing is illustrated with rare images from GM’s media and design archives and complemented by Kimble’s own stunning cutaway artwork. For Corvette and racing fans, this book is the definitive word on Corvette’s nearly 60 years of competition.

Download or read book Porsche 914 914 6 written by Roy Smith and published by Veloce Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Launched in 1969, the 914 series went through many problems and changes before production came to an end in 1976. It was constantly improved during its short life, but time just ran out for the model. It is interesting to note that until the Boxster made its debut, it remained Porsche's only mid-engined production car, although the company's racing models had been built with this layout for some years. The 914 also had a fine competition history - something that is often overlooked or run down because it wasn't as brilliant as that of the 911. By normal standards, however, it was indeed a fine history. There were also a large number of specials built on the 914 chassis, and both of these aspects have been covered in detail. The 914 series has often been cited as the forgotten Porsche, but there is a growing band of enthusiasts who only have eyes for this model. The handling is of course a major factor contributing towards the enjoyment of the type, but many people like the styling, and the fact that for so many years this was the most affordable of all Porsches to own and run. Now times have changed and the model has appreciated, not only in value, but in terms of awareness as well. The 914-6 has become particularly desirable, and it is hoped that this book will go some way towards explaining the 914's various merits.

Book White Racers from Zuffenhausen

Download or read book White Racers from Zuffenhausen written by Karl Ludvigsen and published by Enthusiast Books. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was no small leap for Porsche from its giant-killing Spyders to the powerful Type 917 that swept all before it. The gap was bridged by its 900-series sports-racing cars, here depicted in rare original photography from the Ludvigsen Library. Karl Ludvigsen has personally selected both dramatic action images and intimate technical details of the 904, 906, 907, 908 and 910, which with their air-cooled flat-six and flat-eight engines brought Porsche to the fore in both international sports-car racing and the European Hillclimb Championship, which Porsche won in 1966 and 1968. These were the years of spare-no-expense building of fresh cars for every race, funded secretly by Volkswagen, with exotic titanium and beryllium components. Led technically by the thrusting Ferdinand Piëch, Porsche built the ultra-light 908/03 expressly to win both the Targa Florio and Nürburgring — which it did. Porsche expert Karl Ludvigsen introduces this must-have pictorial panorama for all fans of the white racers from Zuffenhausen.
