Book Chinese Porcelain Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chinese Porcelain Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by W. G. Gulland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Porcelain, Vol. 2 IN this, as in the first volume, no attempt will be made to penetrate into the past beyond the Ming period. Content ing ourselves with the Chinese porcelain to be found here in England, the commencement, to be sure of the date and so start on firm ground, must of necessity be 'with the historic Trenchard and Warham bowls - that is, 1506 (see p. But even thus restricting ourselves, there is a long road of some four hundred years to travel down to the present time. Fol lowing the Chinese method, we find this period divided between two dynasties (roughly speaking, one hundred and forty years belonging to the Ming and two hundred and sixty to the Tsing), which are again subdivided into reigns - some long and some short; but these we must adopt as the measure of our whereabouts, taking the nien - hao, when existent and seemingly reliable, as a guide in the chronological arrange ment of our china. Beyond these date-marks we are very much at the mercy of the somewhat hazy records of Chinese historians and the information collected by the worthy Jesuit fathers, which, notwithstanding all their care, does not seem to have been always exactly correct; so that of necessity, when not helped by family history, we must trust in great measure to our eyesight, seeking for guidance in any change we may find in the quality of the porcelain or glaze, in the shapes of the various vessels, in the style of decoration, or colour of the pigments employed, with any other such aid we can avail ourselves of. Book Chinese Export Porcelains

Download or read book Chinese Export Porcelains written by Andrew D Madsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blue and white porcelain exported by China in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is an important category of artifacts and antiques, a fashion-sensitive commodity that was affected by the ebbs and flows of style and consumer demand. In this copiously illustrated, comprehensive guide to Chinese export porcelain, Andrew Madsen offers both a broad overview and detailed identification and context information for the most common styles and motifs. His focus on the determination of manufacture dates, which are based primarily on data collected from armorial decorated export wares, porcelain cargoes from dated shipwrecks, and tightly dated archaeological contexts, will allow students, scholars, and collectors to refine associations with Chinese export porcelain, revealing the untapped quantity of information that mass-produced Chinese export porcelain has to offer.

Book excerpt: 'The products of the Imperial and other kilns have created one of the gentlest and most beautiful of the arts. The technical inventiveness of Chinese potters - they had discovered methods of glazing pottery by the third century BC - made possible the manufacture of wonderfully delicate materials and colours. Their versatility as artists enabled them to design new shapes, and decorate them with incised or applied motifs which have been imitated throughout the world. Anthony du Boulay traces the development of Chinese porcelain from its beginnings to the early 20th century. His scholarly survey of this wonderful artistic tradition' --from inside cover.
