Download or read book Popular Physical Astronomy Or an Exposition of Remarkable Celestial Phenomena Classic Reprint written by Daniel Vaughan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Physical Astronomy, or an Exposition of Remarkable Celestial Phenomena AN extensive department of human knowledge has been laid open in modern times by a study of the forces which pervade nature, and the Operations which proceed from their action. It has been found that celestial ar rangements depend on the causes which prevail on our planet, and that our experience with terrestrial objects is sufficient to bring us into communion with the most re mote parts of the creation. From their conformity to simple and determinate laws, the phenomena of the Heavens are rendered intelligible to the limited powers of the human mind, and we are thus enabled to realize the greatest advantages from the revelations of the teles Cope, and from the several facts which science has placed at our disposal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Astronomy for Everybody a Popular Exposition of the Wonders of the Heavens The writer who attempts to set forth the facts of tronomy without any use of technical language finds h self in the dilemma of being obliged either to con' only a very imperfect idea of the subject, or to en upon explanations of force and motion which his rea may find tedious. In grappling with this difficulty author has followed a middle course, trying to pres the subject in such a way as to be intelligible and int esting to every reader, and entering into technical planations only when necessary to the clear understa ing of such matters as the measure of time, the chan of the seasons, the varying positions of the conste tions, and the aspects of the planets. It is hoped t the reader who does not wish to master these sub jt will find enough to interest him in the descriptions s illustrations of celestial scenery to which the bulk of work is devoted. Book Popular Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Popular Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Simon Newcomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Astronomy Astronomy is the most ancient of the physical sciences, be ing distinguished among them by its slow and progressive development from the earliest ages until the present time. In no other science has each generation which advanced it 'been so much indebted to its predecessors for both the facts and the ideas necessary to make the advance. The conception of a globular and moving earth pursuing her course through the celestial spaces among her sister planets, which we see as stars, is one to the entire evolution of which no one mind and no one age can lay claim. It was the result of a gradual process of education, of which the subject was not an indi vidual, but the human race. The great astronomers of all ages have built upon foundations laid by their predecessors; and when we attempt to search out the first founder, we find ourselves lost in the mists of antiquity. The theory of uni versal gravitation was founded by Newton upon the laws of Kepler, the observations and measurements of his French con temporaries, and the geometry of Apollonius. Kepler used as his material the observations of Tycho Brahe, and built upon the theory of Copernicus. When we seek the origin of the instruments used by Tycho, we soon find ourselves among2 system OF the world historically developed. Book A Treatise on Astronomy Spherical and Physical

Download or read book A Treatise on Astronomy Spherical and Physical written by William A. Norton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Astronomy, Spherical and Physical: With Astronomical Problems, and Solar, Lunar, and Other Astronomical Tables The Astronomical Problems in Part III. Remain substantially the same as in the last edition. The table of Latitudes and Longitudes of Places, the tables of the Planetary Elements, and the table of the Mean Places of Fixed Stars, have been replaced by others that are more accurate and more extended. The tables of the Sun's and Moon's Epochs have been extended to 1884. Many new illustrative figures, and several plates of telescopic appearances, have been added. One of the most important of the special improvements intro duced consists in the adoption of the new and more accurate determination of the Sun's parallax, and mean distance from the earth. This is now generally adopted, as one evidence of which may be mentioned its introduction into the computations of the English Nautical Almanac for 1870. It brings with it amore accurate determination of the distances of all the planets from the Sun, and of the satellites from their primaries, and the dimensions and densities of the planets. The present is the first American treatise in which this important advance in exact astronomical science has been incorporated. Book Splendors of the Sky Classic Reprint

Download or read book Splendors of the Sky Classic Reprint written by Isabel Martin Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Splendors of the Sky The following book has been compiled from a series of articles written by the author during the past three years for The New York Evening Sun upon astronomical subjects of general, popular interests. Requests from a number of readers for copies of these articles have led to the publication of a selection and arrangement of them, including some revisions and changes, which form a connected and comprehensive treatment of the astronomy of the present day. Diagrams, formulae and mathematical proofs have been entirely omitted as unsuitable to a popular treatment of the subject. It is not the desire of the author to attempt to enter into a detailed scientific exposition of astronomical truths but simply to tell in non-technical terms something about the wonderful progress the astronomers are now making in delving into the mysteries of time and space and in solving problems concerning the heavenly bodies that a few years ago appeared to be beyond solution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Astronomy If proof were wanted of the inexhaustible fertility of astro nomical science in points of novelty and interest, it would suffice to adduce the addition to the list of members of our system of no less than eight new planets and satellites during the prepara tion of these sheets for the press. Among them is one whose discovery must ever be regarded as one of the noblest triumphs of theory. In the account here given of this discovery, I trust to have expressed myself with complete impartiality; and in the exposition of the perturbative action on Uranus, by which the existence and situation of the disturbing planet became revealed to us, I have endeavoured, in pursuance of the general plan of this work, rather to exhibit a rational view of the dynamical action, than to convey the slightest idea of the conduct of those masterpieces of analytical skill which the researches of Messrs. Leverrier and Adams exhibit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A New Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Astronomy Classic Reprint written by David P. Todd and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Astronomy Astronomy is preeminently a science of observation. And there is no sufficient reason why it should not be so studied. Thereby will be fostered a habit of intellectual alertness which lets nothing slip. Six teen years' experience in teaching the subject has taught me many lessons that I have endeavored to embody here. Earth, air, and water (merely material things) are always with us. We touch them, handle them, ascertain their properties, and experiment upon their relations. Plainly, in their study, laboratory courses are possible. So, too, is a laboratory course in astronomy, without actually journeying to the heavenly bodies; for light comes from them in decipherable messages. And geometric truth provides the interpretation. But the student should learn to connect fundamental principles of astronomy with tangible objects of the common sort, somewhat as in physics and chemistry; and I have aimed to indicate practically how teachers and pupils of moderate mechanical deftness can themselves make the appa ratus requisite for illustrating many of these principles. All of it has been repeatedly constructed; and its use should pave the way to better equipment for more advanced study. Clear explanation of the design and in tended character of this work, it is important to state that its author, in early life, imbibed quite a passion for astronomy, and, of course, he naturally sought the aid of books; but, in this field of research, he was really astonished to find how little substantial aid he could procure from that source, and not even to this day have his desires been gratified. Then, as now, books of great worth and high merit were to as found, but they did not meet the wants of a learner; the substantially good were too voluminous and mathematically abstruse to be much used by the humble pupil, and the less mathematical were too superficial and trifling to give satis faction to the real aspirant after astronomical knowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Astronomy Two objects have been kept in view in preparing this little book. One was to condense those facts and laws of the science which are of most interest and importance to the general intelligent public within so small a compass as not to make a very serious addition to the curriculum of the high school or college. The other was so to present the subject that as little formal mathematics as possible should be noces sary to its mastery. Of the first object little need be said. The typical person constantly kept in mind has been the inquiring layman seek ing to know something of the heavenly bodies and their rela tion to the earth, including such subjects of human interest as the changing seasons, the measure of time, and the varying aspects of the planets.
