Book excerpt: Pony Alphabet is a fun way for children to learn their ABC's. A cute, brown, cartoon pony contorts his agile body into the shapes of the letters. As he does this he challenges the readers, "Can you do it too?". This is a lot of fun. The children study the letter shapes and then try to do it themselves. The book has a rhyming text, which follows a rhythmic pattern to make it easy for children to follow. The pages are bright and colorful. Each alphabet page features a letter, a funny flexible pony and a picture of something that begins with that letter. This book uses important key words, and simple sentence structures to help children learn. I am a Junior School teacher, and a parent. This book is designed with my years of educational experience behind it. It is all about making learning fun.

Book Alphabet to Internet

Book excerpt: What Greek philosopher thought writing would harm a student’s memory? Was the poet Byron’s daughter the first computer programmer? Who plays more video games, women over 18 or teenage boys? In Alphabet to Internet: Media in Our Lives, Irving Fang looks at each medium of communication through the centuries, asking not only, "What happened?" but also, "How did society change because of this new communication medium?" and, "How are we different as a result?" Examining the impact of different media on a broad, historical scale—among them mass printing, the telegraph, film, the internet, and advertising—Alphabet to Internet takes us from the first scratches of writing and the origins of mail to today's video games, the widespread and daily use of smartphones, and the impact of social media in political uprisings across the globe. A timeline at the end of each chapter places events in perspective and allows students to pinpoint key moments in media history. Now in its third edition, Alphabet to Internet presents a lively, thoughtful, and accessible introduction to media history.

Book Storytime and Beyond

Download or read book Storytime and Beyond written by Kathy Barco and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join the world of balloons, pancakes, and musical instruments—just a few items to help improve early literacy in the library, the classroom, and at home. Literacy-builders covered range from music and instruments to magnetic letters, alphabet beads, and food. Literacy is a popular topic of discussion among librarians. Especially important is "early literacy," what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. In this book, experienced librarians Kathy Barco and Melanie Borski-Howard share hands-on techniques that they have used to successfully promote early literacy and encourage family involvement. Storytime and Beyond teaches readers how to use "literacy doodads"—inexpensive props that add excitement to storytimes and can be used outside the library or classroom—to enhance the basic components of any early literacy program: talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. Many of the doodads can be created as family do-it-yourself projects, and some can be adapted to work with non-readers of any age. Instruments can also be a great way to get children's attention and teach literacy skills, whether it's a drum to beat while reading a story or a maraca for children to shake during a song, and lesson plans for musical storytimes address how to use rhythm, singing, and dancing to make early literacy fun.
