Book excerpt: Pondering the Imponderable explores the philosophical and theological problems of God and their implications from a Judaic perspective including the attempts at knowing the unknowable and naming the unnamable that have been articulated over the course of some two millennia, as well as how the chasm between man and God is bridged through revelation and the implications of these ideas for the ultimate question of what takes place after death, resurrection, immortality of the soul, or transmigration or reincarnation. In discussing these issues, the non-specialized reader will be introduced to the vast corpus of rabbinic literature written over a period of some two millennia to the present day and to many works that have never been translated into English.

They are the valuable kernels of wisdom and experience that guide physicians through the complexities of modern medical practice. Cut to the Chase - 100 Matrix Pearls for Doctors takes the grand oral traditions of medicine and records them as valuable lessons. Most of these pearls arise from heated discussions at the morbidity and mortality (audit) conference, on hospital rounds, in hallways or in the physicians' lounge. Many arise in the privacy of the consultation room or from family discussions. These lessons are usually lost. They are seldom recorded and have never been catalogued. Dr. Leo Gordon, author of the popular Gordon's Guide to the Surgical Morbidity and Mortality Conference, distills a thirty-year career in medicine into one hundred witty, poignant and eminently readable essays. Students, nurses, administrators and physicians of all specialties will find in this book a delicious view of the ups and downs of life in medicine. Patients will get a rare look into the thoughts of medical practitioners. Cut to the Chase - 100 Matrix Pearls for Doctors is an indispensable guide through the world of today's medicine.

Book Migration and Making an Income in the Context of Human Trafficking

Download or read book Migration and Making an Income in the Context of Human Trafficking written by Anna S. Hüncke and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on volatile processes at the South African-Zimbabwean border that arise from practices of migration and income generating activities. The processes are influenced by neoliberal developments and controversial discourses on migration, commercial sexual services, and human trafficking. In this unstable environment, different actors continuously negotiate, trying to achieve stable positions. By addressing issues related to migration and income generating activities, they maneuver between legal rules and their own moral values and interests. In their attempt to classify incidents in the border context that are unclear to them, actors’ explanations are partly based on the concept of transnational human trafficking. Thereby, they transfer the impenetrability discursively associated with this concept to what they see as obscure cross-border migration, disconcerting sexual services, and other alienating economic activities. Alternatively, actors understand undocumented cross-border migration, commercial sexual services, and other illegalised income-generating activities as common everyday practices at the border and also assume that human trafficking does not play an important role there.

Book At the Heart of it

Download or read book At the Heart of it written by Walt Harrington and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delving into the everyday lives of real, everyday people, Walt Harrington skillfully draws the reader into an intimate relationship with the men and women profiled in this powerful collection of stories--people like V. I. Smith, a homicide detective; Deane Guy, a stock car racer; Jackie Jordan, a social worker in family services; and Sheri D'Amato, a girls' soccer coach. Originally appearing in the Washington Post Magazine, these stories, which capture a cross section of Americans, stand out in the field of journalism because of the unique way in which Walt Harrington uses unheralded, individual lives to elaborate on the great human issues of the day. In "Mothers and Daughters" three generations of women discuss how society affected the choices they made and who they became. "The Mystery of Goodness" follows a Harvard-educated lawyer who handles death-row cases for very little money because he feels the system is unfair to African Americans. In "To Have and Have Not" a young couple with two small children struggle to make ends meet. Harrington describes in detail the creation of a poem by Rita Dove, then United States Poet Laureate, in "The Shape of Her Dreaming." Harrington has adeptly combined sociology and journalism into beautiful prose. As "literary journalism," the stories employ scene, dialogue, and physical description within a narrative framework. At the same time, they also adhere to all the traditional journalistic standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance. As a result, At the Heart of It represents a subgenre that is rarely practiced and seldom understood even within the profession of journalism. All of these stories are snapshots, pieces of everyday life in America that are intended to be a mirror held to the lives of readers. These are not stories about which you can remain neutral; even the most casual readers will be moved by the glimpses Walt Harrington provides us of ourselves.

Book William James on the Stream of Consciousness

Download or read book William James on the Stream of Consciousness written by Frederick Bauer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William James (1842-1910) was "a towering figure in the history of American thought"without doubt the foremost psychologist this country has produced." That was the opinion of Gordon Allport, a Harvard professor and one-time president of the American Psychological Association. However, few Americans living in this third millennium have ever heard of James, despite the fact that his profound insights into the human psyche are now more urgently needed than ever before. But before James' insights can once more become available, a barrier to their reception must be removed. What barrier? The pervasive contradictions in his writings. To rescue his insights from their entangling contradictions, the first step was to draw attention to common sense, the foundation of all 'scientific' learning. William James on Common Sense accomplished that. The next step is to use that common-sense philosophy and James' psychology to present a fully adequate Jamesian account of the stream of consciousness. This book, a sequel to William James on Common Sense, expands his radical-empiricist, two-part model of the stream of consciousness to the one that allows for all three of its components: sensed phenomena, memory-images, and partless thought.

In classic works such as Hurlyburly and Streamers, David Rabe’s depictions of violence and the dark side of the human psyche have won him widespread acclaim. In Recital of the Dog, a painter who has left urban chaos for the country soon finds his hopes of tranquility shattered by a marauding intruder—a dog that torments his small herd of cows. Desperate to restore order to his world, the man shoots the dog, unwittingly unleashing a nightmare on himself. This is a tale of creation and destruction, crime and punishment, rife with insight and black comedy. Praise for Recital of the Dog “So primal, so dark and redeeming it should be considered taboo, and is therefore irresistible. . . . An extraordinary, powerful piece of literature.” —Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul “David Rabe has crafted an intense, strange and frightening nightmare. . . . There is violence and intensity and vividness that a reader feels as though inhabiting the mind of a madman.” —The Denver Post “Playwright Rabe’s first novel is a powerful, shocking portrait of a disintegrating psyche . . . fairly crackles with a dark, disturbing, often dazzling energy.” —Library Journal “A gifted prose writer of original vision . . . In both voice and structure, Recital of the Dog owes much both to Albert Camus and James M. Cain. . . . Rabe’s beautiful, tight, fluent prose renders the fragility of reality with enormous power and grace.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Book Philosophical Approaches to Cormac McCarthy

Download or read book Philosophical Approaches to Cormac McCarthy written by Christopher Eagle and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first edited collection to explore the role of philosophy in the works of Cormac McCarthy, significantly expanding the scope of philosophical inquiry into McCarthy’s writings. There is a strong and growing interest amongst philosophers in the relevance of McCarthy’s writings to key debates in contemporary philosophy, for example, debates on trauma and violence, on the relationship between language and world, and the place of the subject within history, temporality, and borders. To this end, the contributors to this collection focus on how McCarthy’s writings speak to various philosophical themes, including violence, war, nature, history, materiality, and the environment. Emphasizing the form of McCarthy’s texts, the chapters attend to the myriad ways in which his language effects a philosophy of its own, beyond the thematic content of his narratives. Bringing together scholars in contemporary philosophy and McCarthy Studies, and informed by the release of the Cormac McCarthy Papers, the volume reflects on the theoretical relationship between philosophical thinking and literary form. This book will appeal to all scholars working in the rapidly-growing field of McCarthy Studies, Philosophy and Literature, and to philosophers working on a wide range of problems in ethics, aesthetics, epistemology, Philosophy of Nature, and Philosophy of Film across ancient, modern, and contemporary philosophy.

Book The Power of Truth in Perilous Times

Download or read book The Power of Truth in Perilous Times written by Marcus E. Drake and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-09-25 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real Hope in the Midst of a Culture Gone Awry! Yes, we live in this kind of culture and world. However, it is clear in the Bible that the more we pursue the knowledge of God, as defined and described in Scripture, and the more we are devoted to him, the more he will work in us and through us during the perilous times in which we live. Therefore, in thinking about the extraordinary impact biblical truth can have on our society, this book focuses on three vitally important areas in the Bible: how God reveals his existence through nature and his Word, how he discloses his character through his attributes and promises, and how he calls his people to seek the knowledge of himself through the fear of the Lord and the bearing of his image. Thus, the purpose of this book is to lead believers into a deeper understanding of what God is like, a deeper understanding of what he has promised to those who know him, and a deeper understanding of the unshakable hope and strong encouragement we have in God's Word as we live in a confused and deteriorating culture. Rather than simply decrying the devastating changes in our nation and world, this book clearly proclaims the hope that is ours in the very nature and character of God himself, the identity and security believers have in Christ, and the biblical guidance we need in order to be salt and light in our generation. A God-centered, truth-loving, Christ-exalting approach to life changes everything!

Dock Houk makes an ocean of lemonade. Life’s a Joke compiles four books – “It’s All About Me,” “My Life with a Girl,” “Kids and Pets,” and “Life Around Us” – recounting 1,162 jokes, funny anecdotes, and descriptions of Sunday morning comics, clippings of which Dock has been collecting for an incredible amount of decades. As the author writes, “What I mean to convey by saying ‘life is a joke’ is that humor has helped me over some of the rough spots by showing me a side of life that either explains what I am feeling, or gives me a glimpse of something I also see. Humor, whose visual expression is often a joke, makes me smile or even laugh out loud. And sometimes, if you don’t laugh, you might cry.” So crack open Life’s a Joke and crack a smile. You might learn a little wisdom – but if not, at least you’ll get a laugh
