Book Nutrition and the Developing Brain

Download or read book Nutrition and the Developing Brain written by Victoria Hall Moran and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrients play a significant role in brain development throughout fetal and postnatal life. This book reviews the evidence from animal and human research, highlighting the influence of specific nutrients on brain function and cognitive development. With a unique, integrative approach to the nutritional, environmental, and genetic influences on brain development, the book examines issues such as single versus multiple limiting nutrients, critical periods of deficiency, and the impact of the child-parent relationship on the architecture of the developing brain. The effect of undernutrition on the developing brain of infants and young children can be devastating and enduring. It can impede behavioural and cognitive development and educability, thereby undermining future work productivity. Chapter authors are experts in this field of research and provide an up-to-date insight into the role of the individual nutrients in brain development and function.

Book The Yeats Sisters

Download or read book The Yeats Sisters written by Joan Hardwick and published by Pandora Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his autobiography and letters the Irish poet W.B. Yeats gives the impression that he had one rather shadowy sister on the fringes of his life. In reality the poet was for long periods largely dependent on his two sisters, Susan (Lily) and Elizabeth (Lolly). The family home in which he lived was for many years sustained only by the earnings of Lily, who worked as an embroiderer for May Morris, and Lolly, who taught in a kindergarten and gave lessons in painting.

Book The Yeats Sisters and the Cuala

Download or read book The Yeats Sisters and the Cuala written by Gifford Lewis and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yeats sisters have long been overshadowed by their famous brothers - Jack and William. Nevertheless they themselves made a significant contribution to the cultural life of Ireland through their involvement with the Cuala industries. The 'Cuala', as it was popularly known, was an Irish female craft co-operative on the English Arts and Crafts model, founded and managed by the sisters. Elizabeth ran the printing department with William as editor to the Press, while Lily, who was trained in the Morris workshops, ran the embroidery department. Contrary to appearances, the Yeats sisters were not typical middle-class philanthropists but poor spinsters, thrown onto their own resources, who supported themselves and their family. They funded their self-absorbed and improvident father until his death in New York in 1922. The Yeats children carried through their lives resentments from their painful childhood; the two sisters were incompatible; W.B.'s opinion of his sisters was rather blinkered and patronising. The lives of Elizabeth and Lily deserve separate notice freed from his great shadow and from his disparagement.

Book Jack B Yeats

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hilary Pyle
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Jack B Yeats written by Hilary Pyle and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack B. Yeats, son of a painter and brother of the poet, is undoubtedly the outstanding Irish painter of this century. His work is collected by all the major galleries of modern art, and is currently attracting very high prices. In 1970 Hilary Pyle published an excellent biography of Yeats, and since then she has been working on the complete catalogue of his works: a lavish oils catalogue came out in 1992. Yeats is unique among Irish artists in that he spent the first twelve years of his career working solely in watercolour, bringing the technique to a perfection comparable with Turner and Cezanne, prior to choosing oil as his medium. This watercolour catalogue includes over 700 examples of his work dating from 1897 to 1910, with further examples from earlier and later periods. For each entry there is technical data (comprising title of painting, measurements, signature if signed, dates and details of its being exhibited, etc.) with an explanatory paragraph where needed. There are numerous thumb-nail reproductions for identification, and sixteen pages of colour illustrations.
