Book The World of the Russian Fairy Tale

Download or read book The World of the Russian Fairy Tale written by Maria Kravchenko and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the view of many folklorists the images, motifs and characters that occur in fairy tales the world over, have their origins in the earliest beliefs, customs and ways of life of the people who tell the tales. When sacred tales, laws and rites no longer have a living etiological purpose or relevance, they gradually evolve into what is known as the folk or fairy tale, told mainly to elicit wonder or delight. This book looks at the cultural background, history and mythology of the East Slavs with the aim of discovering the possible origins of certain elements in the Russian Fairy Tale, known as the Skazka. It examines the various types of hero or heroine that people it, their adventures and journeys to the Other World, and the fearsome beings such as the Baba-Yaga, the Zmei and Koshchei whom they meet either on the way to, or in the Other World. The study hopes to shed light on why Russian fairy tale personages act in certain ways, what they might be thought to represent and how they reflect some of the most ancient beliefs known to mankind, in particular, worship of the Mother Goddess, the Earth Goddess.

Book The Folkloresque

  • Author : Michael Dylan Foster

Download or read book The Folkloresque written by Michael Dylan Foster and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume introduces a new concept to explore the dynamic relationship between folklore and popular culture: the “folkloresque.” With “folkloresque,” Foster and Tolbert name the product created when popular culture appropriates or reinvents folkloric themes, characters, and images. Such manufactured tropes are traditionally considered outside the purview of academic folklore study, but the folkloresque offers a frame for understanding them that is grounded in the discourse and theory of the discipline. Fantasy fiction, comic books, anime, video games, literature, professional storytelling and comedy, and even popular science writing all commonly incorporate elements from tradition or draw on basic folklore genres to inform their structure. Through three primary modes—integration, portrayal, and parody—the collection offers a set of heuristic tools for analysis of how folklore is increasingly used in these commercial and mass-market contexts. The Folkloresque challenges disciplinary and genre boundaries; suggests productive new approaches for interpreting folklore, popular culture, literature, film, and contemporary media; and encourages a rethinking of traditional works and older interpretive paradigms. Tolbert

Book excerpt: Dog Man meets the Lord of the Rings in this laugh-out-loud graphic novel debut about two aspiring adventurers who face off against startling ghosts, rampaging monsters, and bumbling wizards. Matt Braly, creator of Disney's Amphibia, proclaims Kitty Quest is "an absolutely charming story that had me chuckling the whole way through. I couldn't put it down!" Woolfrik and Perigold are two down-on-their-luck kittens in need of some extra cash, so they've decided to become professional monster slayers. Except they don't know the first thing about it! So when a huge beast starts rampaging through town, they are put to the ultimate test. Fortunately, the duo accidentally awakens a ghost named Earl Mortimore, who is the last not-so-living member of an ancient guild of warriors, and he's going to teach them everything he knows. But the monster is just the beginning of their worries, because someone even more troublesome is pulling its strings. So even though they've never been in a battle--or even gone on a real quest before--it's up to these kittens to save the day and prove they've got what it takes to be heroes.
