Book excerpt: Brutish with the soul of a poet; violent, but with the heart of a protective shepherd. This is not the one dimensional Polyphemus from the Odyssey, but a brilliant, mad, tragic and darkly humorous being who embodies the best and worst of men and monsters. Enter the world of Polyphemus. The son of a god and nymph, despised and cast off by his parents, and feared by all others. Enter a world of magical realism, where dreams and reality merge, where destiny is bent by the fates and gods, and at the center of it all is the anti-hero for the ages- The cyclops, Polyphemus.

Book Painting Poetry and the Invention of Tenderness in the Early Roman Empire

Download or read book Painting Poetry and the Invention of Tenderness in the Early Roman Empire written by Hérica Valladares and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tenderness is not a notion commonly associated with the Romans, whose mythical origin was attributed to brutal rape. Yet, as Hérica Valladares argues in this ground-breaking study, in the second half of the first century BCE Roman poets, artists, and their audience became increasingly interested in describing, depicting, and visualizing the more sentimental aspects of amatory experience. During this period, we see two important and simultaneous developments: Latin love elegy crystallizes as a poetic genre, while a new style in Roman wall painting emerges. Valladares' book is the first to correlate these two phenomena properly, showing that they are deeply intertwined. Rather than postulating a direct correspondence between images and texts, she offers a series of mutually reinforcing readings of painting and poetry that ultimately locate the invention of a new romantic ideal within early imperial debates about domesticity and the role of citizens in Roman society.

Book Edward Thomas Prose Writings a Selected Edition

Download or read book Edward Thomas Prose Writings a Selected Edition written by Edward Thomas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Thomas can be seen as the most important poetry critic in the early twentieth century. Thomas was a prose-writer before he was a poet. The Selected Edition of his prose, and especially this volume, shows that he was also a critic before he was a poet. His unusual literary career opens up key questions about the relation between poetry and criticism, as well as between poetry and prose. Thomas wrote books about poetry, but his criticism mainly took the form of reviews. He reviewed collections, editions, and studies of poetry, most regularly, for the Daily Chronicle and the Morning Post. These reviews amount to a unique commentary on the state of poetry and of poetry criticism after 1900. Since reviewing provided Thomas's main income, he also reviewed other kinds of book. Hence the sheer mass of his reviews, the stress he suffered as a literary journalist. Yet his criticism maintains an astonishingly high standard. Thomas's response to contemporary poetry intersects with his readings of older poetry. No critic or poet of the time was so deeply acquainted with the traditions of English-language poetry or so alert to new poetic movements in Ireland and America. Edward Thomas's writings on poetry have a double importance. Besides suggesting the hidden evolution of his own aesthetic, they constitute a lost history and critique of poetry before the Great War. They change our assumptions about that period. Thomas's perspectives on poets such as Yeats, Hardy, Frost, Lawrence, and Pound illuminate the making of modern poetry.

Book Virgil a Study in Civilized Poetry

Download or read book Virgil a Study in Civilized Poetry written by Brooks Otis and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic study, Brooks Otis presents Virgil as a radically different poet from any of his Greek or Roman predecessors. Virgil molded the ancient epic tradition to his own Roman contemporary aims and succeeded in making mythical and legendary figures meaningful to a sophisticated, unmythical age. Otis begins and ends his study with the Aeneid and includes chapters on the Bucolics and the Georgics. A new foreword by Ward W. Briggs, Jr., places Otis’s groundbreaking achievement in the context of past and present Virgilian scholarship.
