Book excerpt: The problem of counting the number of self-avoiding polygons on a square grid, - therbytheirperimeterortheirenclosedarea,is aproblemthatis soeasytostate that, at ?rst sight, it seems surprising that it hasn’t been solved. It is however perhaps the simplest member of a large class of such problems that have resisted all attempts at their exact solution. These are all problems that are easy to state and look as if they should be solvable. They include percolation, in its various forms, the Ising model of ferromagnetism, polyomino enumeration, Potts models and many others. These models are of intrinsic interest to mathematicians and mathematical physicists, but can also be applied to many other areas, including economics, the social sciences, the biological sciences and even to traf?c models. It is the widespread applicab- ity of these models to interesting phenomena that makes them so deserving of our attention. Here however we restrict our attention to the mathematical aspects. Here we are concerned with collecting together most of what is known about polygons, and the closely related problems of polyominoes. We describe what is known, taking care to distinguish between what has been proved, and what is c- tainlytrue,but has notbeenproved. Theearlierchaptersfocusonwhatis knownand on why the problems have not been solved, culminating in a proof of unsolvability, in a certain sense. The next chapters describe a range of numerical and theoretical methods and tools for extracting as much information about the problem as possible, in some cases permittingexactconjecturesto be made.

They made their names between the Oscar Wilde trial and Stonewall, when homosexuality meant criminality and perversion. And yet both Stein and Capote, openly and exclusively gay, built their outsize reputations on works that directly featured homosexuality and a queer aesthetic. How did these writers become mass-market celebrities while other gay public figures were closeted or censored? And what did their fame mean for queer writers and readers, and for the culture in general? Jeff Solomon explores these questions in So Famous and So Gay. Celebrating lesbian partnership, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas was published in 1933 and rocketed Stein, the Jewish lesbian intellectual avant-garde American expatriate, to international stardom and a mass-market readership. Fifteen years later, when Capote published Other Voices, Other Rooms, a novel of explicit homosexual sex and love, his fame itself became famous. Through original archival research, Solomon traces the construction and impact of the writers’ public personae from a gay-affirmative perspective. He historically situates author photos, celebrity gossip, and other ephemera to explain how Stein and Capote expressed homosexuality and negotiated homophobia through the fleeting depiction of what could not be directly written—maneuvers that other gay writers such as Gore Vidal, Tennessee Williams, and James Baldwin could not manage at the time. It also holds the central, pivotal chapter of the novel, which describes a battle that, while entirely modern, reads like ancient myth, conjuring such texts as the Bhagavad-Gita and Homer's Iliad. Annotations highlight Jarry's alchemical symbolism (among other things), alchemy being the ancient "art and science" studied in secret by such modern scientist/philosophers as Gottfried Leibniz and Isaac Newton. Pataphysics is the science of imaginary solutions, and for Jarry, although there is no other imagination than the scientific, modern science has simply failed to keep up with the scientific imagination. Rounding out this otherwise rectangular issue are the works of several returning authors as well as some new ones. They provide additional musings on such themes as Jarry's alchemical/cosmological play The Pope's Mustardmaker, an amorous veteran of an internal war, microcosm and macrocosm, a fugitive writer apparently obsessed with conspiracy theories and baseball, a peculiar Grimoire on a new set of "Glorious Mysteries," and a terrifying invocation of the Thelemic Law of Rabelais (Jarry's literary "master") as adapted by Crowley.
