Download or read book Modelling Small Deformations of Polycrystals written by J. Gittus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific work of Jean Mandel has been exceptionally rich in the area of the mechanics of solids; the subjects which he has treated have been extremely diverse, from the theory of plasticity, buckling, soil mechanics, visco-elasticity, the theory of reduced models, and thermo dynamics, to percolation in porous media. But throughout this com prehensive work Jean Mandel has always maintained his interest in forming connections between the properties of materials (strength, deformability, viscosity) and the properties of their basic constituents. What is sometimes referred to in materials science as the transition from the microscopic to the macroscopic has for him been a very constant direction of research, which he never ceased to encourage in the Laboratoire de Mecanique des Solides of which he was the director. It is known that in the plasticity of metals permanent deformations must be sought in intercrystalline slip and more generally in disloca tions and the various microstructural defects. Before deformation of polycrystals is tackled, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms which take place within the crystal: the different systems of slip which may be activated and also the elementary mechanisms of twinning. Jean Mandel has shown how to make the transition from the behaviour of the single crystal to that of the polycrystal and has given the relation ships between the overall permanent deformation of the polycrystal and the plastic deformation of the single crystal.
Download or read book Nonlinear Homogenization and its Applications to Composites Polycrystals and Smart Materials written by P. Ponte Castaneda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-17 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although several books and conference proceedings have already appeared dealing with either the mathematical aspects or applications of homogenization theory, there seems to be no comprehensive volume dealing with both aspects. The present volume is meant to fill this gap, at least partially, and deals with recent developments in nonlinear homogenization emphasizing applications of current interest. It contains thirteen key lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Workshop on Nonlinear Homogenization and Its Applications to Composites, Polycrystals and Smart Materials. The list of thirty one contributed papers is also appended. The key lectures cover both fundamental, mathematical aspects of homogenization, including nonconvex and stochastic problems, as well as several applications in micromechanics, thin films, smart materials, and structural and topology optimization. One lecture deals with a topic important for nanomaterials: the passage from discrete to continuum problems by using nonlinear homogenization methods. Some papers reveal the role of parameterized or Young measures in description of microstructures and in optimal design. Other papers deal with recently developed methods – both analytical and computational – for estimating the effective behavior and field fluctuations in composites and polycrystals with nonlinear constitutive behavior. All in all, the volume offers a cross-section of current activity in nonlinear homogenization including a broad range of physical and engineering applications. The careful reader will be able to identify challenging open problems in this still evolving field. For instance, there is the need to improve bounding techniques for nonconvex problems, as well as for solving geometrically nonlinear optimum shape-design problems, using relaxation and homogenization methods.
Download or read book The Mechanics of Crystals and Textured Polycrystals written by William F. Hosford and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is an introduction to crystal mechanics and includes theories of polycrystalline and continuum plasticity for textured materials. It presents a simple and concise review of the mechanics of crystals and polycrystals and gives methods for solving problems related to the plastic deformation of metals. Along with the basic concepts, essential for the student or nonspecialist, much of the author's pioneering work is emphasized and is presented for the first time in book form. Focussing on plasticity, the text includes a chapter on elasticity, which introduces the reader to transformations of stress and strain from one set of axes to another. The effects of anisotropic thermal expansion on polycrystals are also discussed. The concepts of crystal plasticity are extended to predict the behavior of textured polycrystals and the predicted behavior is related to continuum theories of yielding. The author demonstrates that to solve engineering problems, it is possible to bypass continuum mechanics completely, and use crystallographic analyses directly. With our rapidly growing computer power, such an approach to engineering problems may eventually become routine. Sample problems have been included in the first few chapters and Appendix I to illustrate points and show approaches to solving problems. For novices, helpful appendices have been included to cover fundamentals of geometry, crystallography, and mechanics. Students of materials science, mechanics, crystallography, and engineering may use this textbook for part of a general course on the mechanical behavior of metals.

Download or read book Theoretical Prediction of Plastic Strains of Polycrystals written by Bernard Budianski and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plastic strain is considered a consequence of slipping on some of the 12 slip systems of facecentered-cubic single crystals. The polycrystal is assumed to be macroscopically homogeneous and initially isotropic -- that is, the crystal orientations, sizes, shapes and locations are random and uncorrelated. The rotations of the grains during deformation are neglected, and the average plastic strain in grains of a given orientation is calculated on the basis of the assumption that the grains under consideration are spherical and elastically isotropic. Download or read book Three Dimensional X Ray Diffraction Microscopy written by Henning Friis Poulsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-08-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional x-ray diffraction (3DXRD) microscopy is a novel experimental method for structural characterisation of polycrystalline materials. The position, morphology, phase, strain and crystallographic orientation of hundreds of grains or sub-grain embedded within mm-cm thick specimens can be determined simultaneously. Furthermore, the dynamics of the individual structural elements can be monitored during typical processes such as deformation or annealing. The book gives a comprehensive account of the methodology followed by a summary of selected applications. The method is presented from a mathematical/crystallographic point-of-view but with sufficient hands-on details to enable the reader to plan his or her own experiments. The scope of applications includes work in materials science and engineering, geophysics, geology, chemistry and pharmaceutical science.

Download or read book Polycrystalline Materials written by Jim Olson and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycrystalline materials, both dense and porous, are traditionally fabricated from ceramic, metal or composite powders via powder technology routes that include shaping and sintering steps. During shaping a compact body is formed from the granular raw material, while sintering leads to strengthening of this compact and coarsening. In this collection, the authors summarize the basic concepts and classical models used for describing solid state sintering processes. Following a brief introduction, in the second section a historical overview of early sintering theory is given, followed in the third section by an explanation of the driving force of solid state sintering. Following this, grain boundary is analyzed to discern how the spatial orientation of grains themselves may be defined generally and exactly. Additionally, one can easily understand that there is a correlation between the change in the grain orientation and grain deformation and this correlation was mathematically demonstrated. Finally, the authors interpret the quantity of grain orientation corresponding with the experimental measured value, the analysis of local deformation could be performed experimentally on the basis of their results. In closing, following an outline describing the historical development of ECAS and related techniques, the principle of ECAS is briefly described, current opinions concerning sintering mechanisms are summarized, and the problem of carbon contamination is discussed in some detail.
