Book excerpt: Clay Redding, a young Portland photographer, devastated by the recent murder of his girlfriend, Lane, boards a midnight ferry across the river to Bardonia, a town full of the city’s recently deceased, called Polters. The residents there are in chaos since their way forward, the train station, is blocked by a reactionary gang. As he searches for Lane in the land of the dead, he meets Ella, a Polter, and is horrified at feeling attracted to a dead person, but together they liberate the station, restoring the Polters’ path to destiny. On the fog-shrouded platform, he must decide whether to go with Ella to wherever Polters go, or return to ordinary life and mourn for Lane. Polters is about the reality of death and love, with plenty of action on both sides of the silent river that separates them.

Book excerpt: Nikki Powers, a researcher in Oregon, is interested in people’s beliefs about ghosts. When actual ghosts, or “Polters,” appear in the attics of Portland houses, she must decide what she believes. Her boyfriend, Wald, a music-store technician, develops an app that translates the Polters’ terrifying wailing. Nikki and Wald learn that in the Land of the Dead, the Polters were promised they could join the living, but the bodies did not come across properly, leaving them trapped as helpless, wavering wraiths. They beg their hosts for help. Using a trance-inducing virtual-reality system, Nikki and Wald go to Bardonia, home of the Polters. They encounter Salem, director of the institute that sends Polters over to the living. They advise her that the process is not working and ask her to stop. But Salem enjoys being Queen of Bardonia. She has throngs of Polters clamoring for the transfer. What does she care if they’re not happy on the other side? Under pressure, Salem revises her method so Polters are transferred directly into the skulls of living people. The Polters thus have fully functioning bodies, but people in Portland become possessed. Most people are terrified, but some enjoy having a Polter voice in their head. They never feel lonesome and are full of new ideas. Salem missed something, though. Living people get old and die, leaving the Polters facing oblivion. Everyone panics. The word gets back to Bardonia where the resident Polters turn on Salem. In the chaos that ensues, Nikki and Wald become separated. Alone and grieving in a city gone hysterical, Nikki teams up with the Polters in her attic to save Wald and find a solution for both worlds. Both sides finally accept the truth that the living haunt the dead just as death haunts life. Attic Polters is a spirited adventure that unearths serious ideas about death and what comes after.

Download or read book Queen Persephone written by Douglas Roff and published by Douglas Roff. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Queen Persephone is the tenth novel in the series, The Chronicles of Mattias, and concludes his journey in search of what the gods want from him. Will this task, once completed, finally mean that Mattias can retire to one of his lodges and enjoy life with his wives, children and grandchildren? Or is there more that the gods will demand of him? The novel opens up with Mattias and his army perched at the opening of the corridor between his new conquest of Partha and a new kingdom located in a long valley called Tarshan. He is there to meet with the queen and her royals as he continues his task of freeing Lesti and Bjerne slaves, this time in a new place with new characters, some of whom want to help him and some who want to destroy him. These royals are very odd, and Mattias soon suspects evil and foul play from a source but not what that source is. The gods are intervening now more than ever, and the goddess Hel, goddess of the underworld, has taken a liking to Mattias who seemed very taken with the Lady, who is both difficult and arrogant beyond all measure. He enters the kingdom, expels the royals, and discovers hard truths not only about this small kingdom, but all of the kingdoms of the Tarshan Valley. He soon sets about understanding his new conquest as well as the structure of the Krais that crisscross and checkerboard the entire two thousand mile length of the wide valley, sandwiched in between two vast mountain ranges. Mattias' family arrives and with it old disputes about who decides and what is decided. After conquest and the submissions of many new lands, Mattias sets out again by himself, only a few true believers with him as he takes new territory and frees more and more Lesti and Bjerne. They stumble upon a new kingdom, a vast and beautiful kingdom, that regularly engages in slaving and not just the Lesti. Mattias meets and becomes friends with new creatures who are freed by Mattias; ancient steeds and shapeshifters are discovered, along with thousands of trapped souls and life essences brought back to the land of the living. Mattias seeks out Seth and Xerxes, always one step ahead. Aurelius is returned to his sister and father, and ends his association with the Queen of Asan. Fire Jade has been sold in direct contravention of Mattias' orders; it seems Seth and Xerxes have acquired quantities and are selling it in the Tarshan Valley and beyond. Mattias stays in his new kingdom for two years then goes off on the final leg of his decades long journey. He solves the riddles of the Key, and makes his peace with the gods. Or does he. Will his journey end, or is there more he is tasked with. His origins are finally revealed, and his people identified. Where will this new history take him next? Has he discovered whom the gods fear? Perhaps, or perhaps Mattias never understood the makeup of the heavens, and the beings who watch the mortals from above.

Download or read book Whisperers written by J.H. Brennan and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “From the hair-raising to the eyebrow-raising, this is a scintillating account of meetings with spirits through history” (Mark Booth, New York Times–bestselling author). It may seem incredible, but as bestselling novelist and occult expert J.H. Brennan reveals in this eye-opening new history, there is a wealth of evidence to suggest that the disembodied voices of spirits may have subtly directed the course of human events. In Whisperers, Brennan explores how the “spirit world”—whether we believe in it or not—has influenced our own since the dawn of civilization. With a novelist’s flair and a scholar’s keen eye, Brennan details the supernatural affinities of world leaders from King Nebuchadnezzar to Adolf Hitler, showing how the decisions and policies of each have been shaped by their supernatural beliefs and encounters. Brennan also examines the impact of visions, from shamanism in native cultures to prophets such as Joan of Arc. Chronicling millennia of contact between the spirit world and our own, Whisperers presents an entirely new and different way to look at history. “Prolific Irish author and lecturer Brennan’s lifelong fascination with psychic phenomena fuels this comprehensive analysis of potential supernatural influences on history. . . . Certain hokum for skeptics, but the more open-minded will savor this chillingly convincing testimonial.” —Kirkus Reviews “J.H. Brennan is an expert storyteller who paints an often terrifying picture of how human destiny has regularly been changed forever by individuals convinced they were in communication with intelligences from beyond. In Whisperers, Brennan has created a unique and timely history of spirit voices that is both brilliant and utterly chilling.” —Andrew Donkin, coauthor of Illegal

Desperate for copy for the forthcoming edition of the magazine and hounded by his assistant Claire's concern for Sarah's safety, Ethan travels from London to Cornwall to find her. Unhurt, but shaken after crashing his hire car, Ethan is awakened by Jenny Woodford, a divorcee in her thirties, who takes him back to her house to recuperate. Jenny is then shocked to learn that Sarah was visiting Wheal Hingston, a mine which in the 16th Century was said to be cursed following the death of six villagers by the hand of Martha Guildeforde, a psychopathic female executioner and lover of the sadistic Judge Fredricks. Unexpectedly, Jenny runs away, leaving Ethan tired, confused and unclear as to his whereabouts over the last twenty-four hours. He rings Claire and despite what she tells him about the disappearance of four American tourists, he insists on continuing his search. Promising Claire he will call the police if he doesn't find Sarah by the end of the day, he sets off hoping to retrace his steps. Discovering the deaths of many Cornish men and boys in two underground tragedies have not been forgotten, nor those responsible forgiven, Ethan soon wishes he'd listened to Claire. The story which unfolds not only relates the modern-day horrors experienced by a man drawn into a sequence of events he could never have imagined, but also tells of the hardship faced by Cornish Miners and their families, in their centuries past quest to satisfy the greed of those who invested funds in a dangerous and life expectancy reducing industry.
Download or read book Three Paths to Christ written by Rudolf Steiner and published by Rudolf Steiner Press. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Replete with fresh immediacy, rich spiritual content, innovation and occasional humour, these talks were given at a time when Rudolf Steiner was preparing for independence from the Theosophical Society. Alongside the much-loved lectures ‘Nervousness and Ego Development’ – in which Steiner shares practical exercises for coping with contemporary life’s challenges – and ‘Love and Its Significance in the World’, the collection finds a focal point in descriptions of the ‘Three Soul Paths to Christ’. The first of these is via the Gospels, the second through ‘Inner Experience’ and the third ‘Initiation’, which Steiner characterizes as a path transcending religion. He further elaborates these themes in a lecture entitled, ‘Mysteries of the Kingdoms of Heaven in Parables and in Real Form’. Elijah, John the Baptist, Raphael and Novalis form a golden thread throughout, appearing as a fourfold herald of a true Christianity of the future. A moving yet astringent tribute to the founder of Theosophy, H.P. Blavatsky, on the tenth anniversary of her death, adds the Christian verities not embraced by Blavatsky during her lifetime, and two stirring talks that set the mood for Christmastide – via St Matthew, Eudocia and St Luke – round off the volume with paeans to Novalis. The lectures are complemented with an introduction by Margaret Jonas, detailed notes and an index. Trans. by C. Bryan; Intro. by M. Jonas (Fourteen lectures, various cities, Jan.–Dec. 1912, GA 143)
