One day, in the midst of a ship-looting-gone-wrong, she flies away to pursue an acting career. After all, a life surrounded by pirates can ruffle anyone's feathers. However, when the pirates discover that Polly has run away, they decide to change their scoundral ways, which leads them to Aargaholics Anonymous. The reforming pirates overcome 30 days in the program, and, on the last day, they are awarded a free cruise. All is smooth sailing until a collision with another ship begs the question: what, really, are the true treasures in life? Polly Wants a Curtain Call is as engaging as it is funny and incorporates a hilarious cast of characters to keep you smiling all the way home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polly Pepper, the legendary superstar of television's golden age, is finally back in the entertainment headlines. She's landed the title role in a new production of the musical Mame, and though it's off-off-off-off Broadway (Glendale, California, actually), Polly's bank account--and her ego--need the job. There's one minor detour, though: on the second day of rehearsals, wunderkind director Karen Richards turns up dead. Of course Polly's nose for news needs to know, and though Karen was well liked, it seems some last-minute casting changes did her in. Sadly, Polly's Suspect #1 is her new friend and co-star Sharon Fletcher. Sharon was the last person seen with the deceased director. . .and her Emmy matches the dent in Karen's head. The more Polly sniffs, the surer she is that Sharon didn't haul off and bash Karen with her Emmy. But the evidence is mounting, and it'll take all of Polly's wits to save the jailed soap star from a murder rap. . .and a starring role in a real-life drama tentatively entitled Framed! "Jordan cleverly propels the hilarious plot briskly." --I Love a Mystery

Download or read book Blindsight written by Peter Watts and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2006-10-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugo and Shirley Jackson award-winning Peter Watts stands on the cutting edge of hard SF with his acclaimed novel, Blindsight Two months since the stars fell... Two months of silence, while a world held its breath. Now some half-derelict space probe, sparking fitfully past Neptune's orbit, hears a whisper from the edge of the solar system: a faint signal sweeping the cosmos like a lighthouse beam. Whatever's out there isn't talking to us. It's talking to some distant star, perhaps. Or perhaps to something closer, something en route. So who do you send to force introductions with unknown and unknowable alien intellect that doesn't wish to be met? You send a linguist with multiple personalities, her brain surgically partitioned into separate, sentient processing cores. You send a biologist so radically interfaced with machinery that he sees x-rays and tastes ultrasound. You send a pacifist warrior in the faint hope she won't be needed. You send a monster to command them all, an extinct hominid predator once called vampire, recalled from the grave with the voodoo of recombinant genetics and the blood of sociopaths. And you send a synthesist—an informational topologist with half his mind gone—as an interface between here and there. Pray they can be trusted with the fate of a world. They may be more alien than the thing they've been sent to find. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
Download or read book Noel Coward written by Philip Hoare and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated and controversial dramatists. To several generations, actor, playwright, songwriter, and filmmaker Noël Coward (1899-1973) was the very personification of wit, glamour, and elegance. Given unprecedented access to the private papers and correspondence of Coward family members, compatriots, and numerous lovers, Samuel Johnson Prize-winning biographer Philip Hoare has produced an illuminating and sophisticated biography of Coward, whose relentless drive for success and approval fueled the stunning bursts of creativity that launched the once-painfully middle class boy from the suburbs of London into a pantheon of theatrical deities that includes Gilbert and Sullivan, Oscar Wilde, and George Bernard Shaw. As much the embodiment of a lifestyle as an actual inhabitant of it, Coward’s carefully cultivated image defined the aspirations of untold numbers of actors, artists, and writers who succeeded him, and Hoare’s meticulously researched biography peels away the layers of this complex persona to reveal the man underneath it all, whom The Times of London decreed upon his death to be the most versatile of all the great figures of the English theater.

Download or read book Living Life as an Adventure written by Esther Davis Lang and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The author was living in a Senior Independent Living Center in Severna Park MD, when the Covid 19 pandemic struck. Everything was locked down. She was bored. What better time to write about “what was it like back when” as her family had been urging her to do. She begins her book by inviting you to a holiday dinner, speaking to the reader, personally. Her keen sense of humor is obvious as she tells of growing up in a small town in the hills of western Maryland. It was 1924. In 1941, when attending college, WWII was raging on two fronts. She wanted to help. She spent 2 summers working at a Women’s Land Army Camp, harvesting crops. The army desperately needed Physical Therapists. Having the required biology credits, she accepted the Army’s offer for training, at an army hospital and became a Physical Therapist. She describes working with soldiers with amputated legs and peripheral nerve injuries. They were not pitied but encouraged to find humor even in such situations. She writes of her excitement and wonder as she travels to Norway, the Passion Play in Germany, the Canyons and Parks in the west. There are funny tales of tent camping with her brother and sister-in-law. She drove her “little red sable” and followed them, using a CB to communicate, (calling M & M, this is Red Sable, over) In her book Esther Davis Lang has made history interesting, funny and easy to read.
