Book The Stolen Dream

Download or read book The Stolen Dream written by John Devaney and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines a period when football underwent a seismic and ineradicable change brought about by the determination of the Victorian Football League to wrest control of the game's development and destiny from the various state controlling bodies and the Australian Football Council. Whereas the VFL had initially been the first among equals, it gradually assumed the role of the sole and undisputed guardian of the code. The AFC, once football's ostensible national controlling body, became an irrelevance. Instead of a national sport with a national remit we ended up with an expanded VFL with a majority of Victorian member clubs supplemented by a token sprinkling of teams from interstate. Such teams were in most cases created from scratch and could in no way be said to derive directly from the states? unique and distinctive football traditions and culture. For some, it was a brave new world, but evolution does not inevitably entail improvement.

Book Myrtle Point and Vicinity

Download or read book Myrtle Point and Vicinity written by Chuck King and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town of Myrtle Point, incorporated in 1887, was platted in a grove of myrtle trees on a point of land overlooking the South Fork of the Coquille River. Ten years after incorporation, Myrtle Point was a thriving commercial hub of 600 people. It had a riverboat landing, two hotels, and streets lined with churches, businesses, houses, and barns. This book begins in 1893, a landmark year when the telephone and the train both arrived in Myrtle Point. It ends in 1950, a time of prosperity for loggers and farmers in southwestern Oregon and for the enterprises in Myrtle Point that served them. Family photographs, many published here for the first time, reveal glimpses of a world where logging was king; the Coos County Fair was the biggest event of the year; and, early on, farm families traveled by horse team and riverboat to shop in a bustling Myrtle Point.

Book The Boy from Birdum

Download or read book The Boy from Birdum written by Bill Dempsey and published by Magabala Books. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Dempsey is a humble achiever. He is known primarily as a champion footballer with West Perth and the Darwin Buffaloes. A premiership captain who played over 400 games in 20 seasons in Perth and the Northern Territory, and a member of the AFL's Indigenous Team of the Century, his record and his achievements compare with the very best. He is revered as a true legend at West Perth. Bill has led a remarkable life. Born in the shadow of Japanese bombing raids in 1942. Forcibly removed from his mother after the death of his father and baby sister, he was a stolen child who never lost contact with his family and found a second family amongst his fellow inmates at the Retta Dixon Home. Brought to Perth at the age of seventeen as a 'spare wheel' to his mate Jim Anderson, he stayed on to become a football champion and a trailblazer as an Aboriginal entrepreneur throughout the 80s. In The Boy from Birdum, Bill tells his story frankly, courageously, and with the charismatic flair of a natural-born yarn spinner. 'By contrast some books demand to be written and read...This book is one of those...Bill Dempsey writes about matters of consequence. His memory is vivid because he gives matters of importance a face...He had all the pieces a champion footballer needed to have!' — Dennis Cometti AM, Australian sports commentator, former player and coach of AFL
