Book The Insider s Guide To Political Internships

Download or read book The Insider s Guide To Political Internships written by Grant Reeher and published by . This book was released on 2002-09-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, thousands of college students invade Washington, D.C. and the fifty state capitals to volunteer as political interns. Unfortunately, they are rarely able to "hit the ground running," lacking the tools to help them do so. The Insider's Guide to Political Internships provides those tools. This volume contains practical, concise essays written by political professionals and scholars with extensive experience supervising internships, as well as advice from many former interns. The book highlights internships on Capitol Hill, at the White House, in the executive branch, at the state level, in the Congressional district office, and at non-profit groups.

Book Storming Washington

Download or read book Storming Washington written by Stephen E. Frantzich and published by Amer Political Science Assn. This book was released on 1986 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet provides information to help prepare undergraduate students for academic internships with the federal government. Most interns serve without pay; however, the opportunity to observe and participate in government provides important guidance for future decisions, and even potential employment opportunities. The student should do research on sponsors, be aware of the types of public policies each potential employer promotes and opposes, and become knowledgeable about ideologies and issues. Many sources are available for research, and the student should take advantage of these. When applying for an internship the student should use appropriate procedures for contacts, be able to sell himself or herself well to the sponsor, and tailor the resume to the particular position. Applicants may also enhance their chances by being flexible, specific, and realistic. The applicant must use specific criteria in making decisions about offers, and, once accepted, the intern must be aware of, and make others aware of, the learning and research goals and the responsibilities and expectations of the internship. The intern will play the role of participant observer, so techniques of keeping a journal, developing rapport with co-workers and sponsors, and forming and testing research hypotheses, must be developed; and intern must also know how to deal properly with ethical considerations such as propriety of tasks performed and confidentiality of information. Also, it is important that the intern follows proper procedures for ending the internship. Five appendices include a guide to academic internship programs in Washington; useful information on living in the city; a "potpourri" of political science resources and experiences in Washington; and information for the academic supervisor, including credit options and research assignments. Book Political Science Internships Towards Best Practices

Download or read book Political Science Internships Towards Best Practices written by Renée van Vechten and published by American Political Science Association. This book was released on 2021-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Science Internships: Towards Best Practices builds on a robust body of evidence that demonstrates the integrative power of internships to help undergraduate students learn by doing. Targeting faculty, instructors, and administrators who deliver political science curricula, this book examines the state of internships in the discipline, scrutinizing different types of internship programs, their vital components, and the roles of key stakeholders: faculty mentors and instructors, site supervisors, and students. Employing a variety of methodological approaches and incorporating original research, contributors from across the field offer analytical insights and recommendations for facilitating experiential learning. Practical resources, organized into a supplemental section, exhibit how to structure, maintain, and sustain internship programs and help stakeholders achieve intended learning outcomes. As this text makes clear, moving towards best practices in political science internships requires curricula to be reoriented around more accessible, inclusive practices that place student learning at their center.
