In literature, in trade, and in politics, this country has some of whom colonists have felt proud, and continue to admire. The independence and honesty of John Fairbairn, as the Father of our Press, and the Founder of our Liberty, were such as to place him in the front rank, with all good men. In the next rank, Eastern and Western men alike recognised in William Hume, another whose industry, energy, perseverance, influence, and independence were marking him out as one to whom the country would owe the honour due to a "son of the soil;" one of such political promise as to identify him with the strong, and the leading, in the colony's political advancement. Hardworking, enthusiastic, a Separationist of the Saparationists, the East, in him, expected the realisation of uncompromising adherence to Eastern parties and Eastern politics, for Eastern welfare. With his word for his bond, and a courage which no one doubted, his constituents looked upon him as impervious to influences which have been the political death of many a good man's fame. True and fast, they confided in him as they have seldom done with others. Knowing his politics they exacted no pledges, but returned him, under the impression that he knew them and their views as well as, they believed, they knew him and his opinions. But events have shown that they did not quite understand each other. Mr. Paterson has defined the well-known axiom of representation, as applied to himself, namely, that a holder of a people's suffrages is their representative, so long as he acts in accord with their expressed, and even clearly-implied, opinions, with liberty upon all questions on which there has been no tacit or open agreement, to act as he may think best without reference to his constituents. These two doctrines are the guide of members of the Imperial Parliament, and we venture to assert that no member of the House of Commons, whatever his status, social, political, or official, would, for one moment, venture to disregard it, and determine to retain his seat. Classical political economy therefore encouraged policies that would hinder people's ability to produce for their own needs. Michael Perelman, however, in this innovative take on the subject, seeks to challenge the ideologies that would allow things to continue in this line unchecked.

Originally a struggle to escape the West’s direct political and economic control, it has become a catch-all idea, often for performing ‘morality’ or ‘authenticity’; it suffocates African thought and denies African agency. Olúfẹ́mi Táíwò fiercely rejects the indiscriminate application of ‘decolonisation’ to everything from literature, language and philosophy to sociology, psychology and medicine. He argues that the decolonisation industry, obsessed with cataloguing wrongs, is seriously harming scholarship on and in Africa. He finds ‘decolonisation’ of culture intellectually unsound and wholly unrealistic, conflating modernity with coloniality, and groundlessly advocating an open-ended undoing of global society’s foundations. Worst of all, today’s movement attacks its own cause: ‘decolonisers’ themselves are disregarding, infantilising and imposing values on contemporary African thinkers. This powerful, much-needed intervention questions whether today’s ‘decolonisation’ truly serves African empowerment. Táíwò’s is a bold challenge to respect African intellectuals as innovative adaptors, appropriators and synthesisers of ideas they have always seen as universally relevant.

The classical age of economics was marked by an intense interest in scientific methodology. It was, moreover, an age when science and philosophy were not yet distinct disciplines, and the educated were polymaths. The classical economists were acutely aware that suitable methods had to be developed before a body of knowledge could be deemed philosophical or scientific. They did not formulate their methodological views in a vacuum, but drew on a rich collection of philosophical ideas. Consequently, issues of methodology were at the heart of political economys rise as a science. The classical era of economics opened under Adam Smith with political economy understood as an integral part of a broader system of social philosophy; by the end, it had emerged via J. S. Mill as a "separate science", albeit one still inextricably tied to the other social sciences and to ethics. The Rise of Political Economy as a Science opens with a review of the epistemological ideas that inspired the classical economists: the methodological principles of Bacon, Descartes, Hobbes, Newton, Locke, Hume, Stewart, Herschel, and Whewell. These principles were influential not just in the development of political economy, but in the rise of social science in general. The author then examines science in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain, with a particular emphasis on the all-important concept of induction. Having laid the necessary groundwork, she proceeds to a history and analysis of the methodologies of four economist-philosophers—Adam Smith, Robert Malthus, David Ricardo, and J. S. Mill—selected for their historical importance as founders of economics and for their common Scottish intellectual lineage.
