Download or read book Legacies of Racial Violence Clarifying and Addressing the Presence of the Past written by David Cunningham and published by Sage Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a broad range of disciplinary approaches - including contributions from demographers, economists, epidemiologists, historians, molecular and biological anthropologists, political scientists, and sociologists - to advance the science of "legacies" research. The contributions assembled here take a broader view of the ways in which we conceptualize and measure racial violence and the possibilites for effective intervention by bringing quantitative and qualitative insights to bear on salient patterns of historical violence, the contemporary outcomes they are posited to impact, and the intervening mechanisms through which they operate.

Book The Senate and the People of Canada

Download or read book The Senate and the People of Canada written by James T. McHugh and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Senate of Canada is the upper house of its parliamentary system. It is an appointed legislative chamber that has been frequently derided for its apparent lack of effective activity, its failure to represent Canada’s federal system, and the perceived lack of accountability among its members. Reform of the Senate persists as one of the most contentious issues in the country. Typical reform proposals begin with the assumption that it must become an elected body that primarily represents Canada’s provinces and can serve as an effective check on the federal government and the House of Commons. This book challenges those assumptions through a thorough analysis that places the Senate within the context of other parliamentary upper houses. It presents a hypothetical constitutional amendment and a proposal for non-constitutional reform that are based upon alternative models derived from that broader context. The book ultimately recommends a Senate that remains unelected but with a more expansive appointment process that more appropriately reflects the optimal role of a parliamentary upper house as well as the diversity, regional aspirations, and political principles of Canadian democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new fifth edition of Canadian Politics continues the work of earlier editions in offering a comprehensive introduction to Canadian government and politics by a widely recognized and highly respected group of political scientists writing about subjects on which they are acknowledged experts. For this edition, the editors have organized the book into four sections: Part I: Citizenship, Identities, and Values; Part II: Institutions; Part III: Democracy and Representation; and Part IV: Canada in the World. The fourth section develops a focus on the diverse and increasingly important influences of globalization on the Canadian polity, the environment, and the role of Canada in the world. Of the eighteen chapters, nine are completely new, and six new authors appear, including Martin Papillon on Aboriginal governments, Peter J. Stoett on Canadian international environmental policy, and Andrew F. Cooper on Afghanistan and Canadian foreign policy. The remaining chapters have been thoroughly revised and updated.

Book The Political Ecology of the Metropolis

Download or read book The Political Ecology of the Metropolis written by Jefferey Sellers and published by ECPR Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of citizens now live in sprawling yet interconnected urban environments, as diversified metropolitan geographies eclipse the centuries-old divide between urban and rural areas. This changing landscape has also transformed local sources of electoral politics, and the resulting patterns of electoral support and participation have shifted partisan competition to the right. This volume undertakes the first international comparative analysis of metropolitan political behavior, termed the "metropolitanization of politics," providing a powerful new thesis for explaining a number of recent shifts in political preferences and voting habits.
