Book The Current Landscape and Changing Perspectives of Part Time Faculty

Download or read book The Current Landscape and Changing Perspectives of Part Time Faculty written by Richard L. Wagoner and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2007 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on nationally representative quantitative data from the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty, qualitative fieldwork, and the lived experiences of administrators and faculty members, this volume provides a variety of perspectives on part time community college faculty. The multiple perspectives are intended to offer a complex and conflicted picture of community college part-time faculty, as there are no easy answers to the questions that arise from colleges' heavy reliance on their service. This volume seeks to encourage discussion and debate on the topic, update and advance the scholarship on part-time faculty and to highlight best practices and useful examples that can help two-year colleges continue to play a vital role in American higher education. Community colleges are the only sector of public, nonprofit postsecondary education in the United states where part-time faculty outnumber full-time faculty. This has significant implication for community college administrators who are responsible for recruiting, hiring, and supporting part-time faculty; for college, district, and state leaders who help set policies regarding the use of part-timers; and for all part-time faculty who seek to receive equitable treatment as they strive to enhance the quality of education for community college students. This is the 140th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Community Colleges. Essential to the professional libraries of presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other leaders in today's open-door institutions, New Directions for Community Colleges provides expert guidance in meeting the challenges of their distinctive and expanding educational mission.

Book Part time Faculty Job Satisfaction

Download or read book Part time Faculty Job Satisfaction written by John P. Kurnik and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In 1990, two-year colleges nationwide reported that approximately 38% of their faculty were part-time. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics' (NCES) 1999 National Study of Post-Secondary Faculty (NSOPF), this percentage continues to rise, and currently exists at 40% or more in some two-year and four-year institutions. To retain competent, qualified, and successful teachers, it is critical for higher education administrators to determine factors that may contribute to part-time faculty's job satisfaction. This study investigated whether the use of instructional technology for curriculum delivery affected part-time faculty job satisfaction by investigating four specific areas that may be affected. The first component explored whether the use of a technology-based educational delivery system in higher education contributed to overall part-time faculty job satisfaction in and four- year institutions. The second examined whether the use of a technology-based educational delivery system in higher education contributed to the overall job satisfaction of part-time faculty in their first year of teaching. Third, it was the intent of the researcher to determine whether the use of a technology-based educational delivery system in higher education contributed to the overall job satisfaction of part-time male and female faculty. In the fourth component, by applying an adaptation of the Center for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) curriculum classification scheme to group teaching fields, the researcher observed whether the use of a technology-based educational delivery system in higher education influenced the overall job satisfaction of part-time faculty in each teaching discipline. The results of this study confirmed in eight of the research questions the notion that the use of instructional technology when teaching had no effect on the overall job satisfaction of part-time faculty. Two areas of statistical significance evolve around the Computer Science and Social Sciences disciplines. Although both null hypotheses were statistically rejected, a closer look at both of these areas demonstrates the need for further understanding of their statistical significance. The results of this study demonstrate that during the moment in time when the 1999 NSOPF survey was conducted, instructional technology may not have been a large enough component in the total package of teaching deliverables to make a measurable difference in job satisfaction (NCES, 2005). This observation applies to most liberal arts teaching disciplines and affects the variables of gender, years of teaching experience, and type of institution equally with little exception.

Book Job Satisfaction Levels Among Adjunct and Full time Faculty in Arkansas Community Colleges

Download or read book Job Satisfaction Levels Among Adjunct and Full time Faculty in Arkansas Community Colleges written by Donald Jacob Hutchinson and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the job satisfaction levels of adjunct and full-time faculty at community colleges in Arkansas. The study used Herzberg's Motivation/Hygiene theory as a framework for understanding job satisfaction and factors that lead to job satisfaction/dissatisfaction. The study also examined the difference in overall job satisfaction between adjunct faculty and full-time faculty. The findings of this study support Herzberg's Motivation/Hygiene theory. Subsequent findings showed that adjuncts are generally more satisfied with their job than their full-time counterparts. The findings of the analyses also identified key components or factors that contribute to the overall job satisfaction of full-time and adjunct faculty members. The research findings should help education leaders to improve the working conditions for faculty at community colleges and help improve the overall job satisfaction of both groups.

Book excerpt: In the current climate of accountability that characterizes public higher education in the U.S., policymakers rely heavily on institutional performance outcome measures such as retention and graduation rates for the purpose of evaluating the instructional effectiveness of colleges and universities. In recent years, criticism based on such performance outcomes has been leveled at these institutions as regards their heavy reliance on part-time adjunct faculty. Critics have argued that these outcomes show that part-time adjuncts teach less effectively than full-time permanent faculty, and therefore do not deliver value for the government funding allocated to the institutions that employ them. Much of the existing research about the teaching effectiveness of part-time adjunct faculty relative to full-time permanent faculty, however, is characterized by inconsistent findings. Many of these studies rely on student performance and behavioral outcomes to measure instructional effectiveness. It can be argued that, in general, the outcome-oriented approach to assessing instructional effectiveness is inadequate, because it does not take into account the environmental circumstances that act as inputs to the educational process and impact faculty's ability to teach effectively. A balanced assessment of instructional quality requires examination of these inputs, particularly the ways in which government and institutional policies and practices influence instructors' teaching practices, as well as assessment of institutional or student performance outcomes. This dissertation describes a mixed methods study that examines and compares the reported teaching practices of full-time and part-time community college faculty; assesses the degree to which these practices align with or diverge from the principles associated with the Chickering and Gamson (1987) Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education construct; and employs the Bronfenbrenner (1986) Ecological Model as a framework for exploring how the environmental factors that shape faculty's day-to-day professional experiences influence their teaching practices. Important findings of this study include the fact that full-time faculty employ progressive teaching methods to a greater extent than part-time faculty; that part-time faculty feel excluded from the community of their school or department; and that institutional policies and practices that limit part-time faculty access to teaching-related resources can inhibit their implementation of effective teaching methods.

Book The Majority minority a Qualitative Study Exploring Part time Community College Faculty Members Socialization and Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Majority minority a Qualitative Study Exploring Part time Community College Faculty Members Socialization and Job Satisfaction written by Briant K. Coleman and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated part-time community college faculty members' socialization and job satisfaction. Notwithstanding the fact that part-time faculty members make up the majority of faculty in community colleges, and that the number of part-time faculty members is likely to increase, their inclusion, leadership roles, and resources allocated by the college do not always lead to instructional success (Coalition on the Academic Workforce [CAW], 2012; Gappa, Austin, & Trice, 2007; U.S. Department of Education, 2012). Because of the steady growth and increased usage of part-time or adjunct faculty, there seems to be a need to focus on how these faculty members are socialized into the culture of the institution and to determine how these faculty members rate their own job satisfaction.
