Book An Evaluation of Police Handgun Ammunition

Download or read book An Evaluation of Police Handgun Ammunition written by R. C. Dobbyn and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1973, the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice of the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration approved and funded a project, submitted by the Law Enforcement Standards Laboratory (LESL), National Bureau of Standards, to conduct a study of the terminal effects of police handgun ammunition. LESL contracted with the U.S. Army Ballistic Research Laboratories, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, September, 1973, to conduct this study, to prepare a report of their findings and to draft guidelines for the selection of law enforcement service handgun ammunition. The full report entitled, "An Evaluation of Handgun Ammunition," is forthcoming as a publication of the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. The full report will contain a complete description of a model for human incapacitation by handgun bullets, comparisons of presently available factory-loaded handgun cartridges according to their potential to incapacitate humans, to penetrate common materials, and to pose a hazard to bystanders. It will also contain lengthy tables of experimental data which are not included in this summary report.

Book The Search for an Effective Police Handgun

Download or read book The Search for an Effective Police Handgun written by and published by Charles C. Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 1973 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of research results providing police officials and officers with comparative technical information on various types and models of handguns and ammunition. Prior to standardization which occurred within police departments in the 1930's, officers were usually expected to furnish their equipment, including weapons and ammunition. Two factors, a high-degree of accuracy in the .38 S & W special revolver cartridge and the convenience of police exchanging a standard ammunition, led to the adoption of the S & W .38 by most large departments. However, researchers since 1900 have presented evidence that this accepted police handgun cartridge should be reevaluated in terms of effectiveness. Professor Bristow offers a review of some of that research in this collection of agency evaluations, factory ballistic test reports, excerpted government documents, and other materials which present alternatives to the .38 special as the standard police handgun. Wound ballistics, considerations of velocity and shock, and technical concerns over accuracy versus recoil are detailed in both descriptive and statistical terms. The pros and cons of high-velocity expanding bullets are presented, as are the implications of using large caliber revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. These subjects are also discussed in the context of such larger problems as the cost-risk of change and community relations versus officer protection. The material is intended to aid law enforcement officials and officers who have the responsibility of choosing and justifying a handgun for their agency or themselves.

Book Ammunition for Law Enforcements Part I Methodology for Evaluating Relative Stopping Power and Results

Download or read book Ammunition for Law Enforcements Part I Methodology for Evaluating Relative Stopping Power and Results written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive study was conducted for the Department of Justice to determine what factors influence human incapacitation by handgun bullets. An evaluation of the effectiveness of nearly all commercial handgun bullets was made. The report describes the methodology developed and the application of this methodology to handgun ammunition evaluation. Data on the individual test rounds fired are published in the following companion reports: 'Ammunition for Law Enforcement: Part II, Data Obtained for Bullets Penetrating Tissue Simulant, ' BRL Report No. 1940, 'Ammunition for Law Enforcement: Part III: Photographs of Bullets Recovered After Impacting Tissue Simulant, ' BRL Memorandum Report No. 2673.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive study was conducted for the Department of Justice to determine what factors influence human incapacitation by handgun bullets. An evaluation of the effectiveness of nearly all commercial handgun bullets was made. As part of this study, each bullet was fired into a gelatin tissue simulant. This report is a supplement to the overall program methodology. Presented in this report is the data recorded for each bullet as it penetrated the gelatin tissue simulant as measured by flash x-ray and high-speed cinematographic techniques.

Download or read book Wound Ballistics written by Beat P. Kneubuehl and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-11 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive interdisciplinary reference work for wound ballistics Basics The book begins by providing the necessary basic knowledge about physics, ballistics and ammunition and weapons. Then it describes the behaviour of projectiles in humans and animals (the physics of gunshot injuries) and introduces the experimental simulation of gunshot wounds, including the materials suitable for this purpose. Applications These basic principles can be applied in forensic medicine and criminalistics. The gunshot wound provides some forensic traces and the experimental reconstruction helps to understand the dynamic crime process. The wounding potential of non-lethal weapons can be determined. In emergency and war surgery, injuries caused by small arms bullets and fragments as well as by gas jets (of gas weapons) can be assessed. International conventions could be freed from undefined terms (such as “unnecessary suffering”) with the help of physical quantities. Reference work Detailed tables as e. g. ballistic data of numerous cartridge types, also older ones, material properties, as well as many otherwise difficult to access data and a trilingual glossary of ballistic and technical terms in the languages German, English and French. NEW Wound Ballistics of European Police ammunition References to recent research results Partly coloured illustrations Due to the increase in terrorist and criminal activities worldwide, it is not only members of the armed forces who are affected. Surgeons, forensic doctors, police officers and criminalists also need to know and be able to assess the specifics of gunshot wounds.
