Book Police Communications 2000

Download or read book Police Communications 2000 written by John L. Kuykendall and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio communication for law enforcement agencies in Riverside County, Calif. is becoming outdated as a result of overcrowded frequencies and delays in transmission. This in turn raises concerns for police officer safety. This study examined the communication requirements of these agencies and possible solutions to the problem, including satellite, microwave, and ultra and very high frequency (UHF and VHF) radio frequencies. In addition, a survey was conducted of executives in the fields of law enforcement and communications, and results were used to develop scenarios for future police communication systems. The scenario advocated would use the 800 MHZ trunked network radio system. Strategic, implementation, and transition plans for putting such a system in operation are presented. The proposed system would alleviate current problems, permit county-wide communications among emergency personnel, and provide channels for normal voice communications and for digital transmissions for use in CRT's in patrol vehicles. 10 tables, 5 figures, 5 references, appendixes.

For police and law enforcement professionals, having the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with fellow officers, subordinates, higher-ups, community members, victims and their families, other departments and jurisdictions, and the court systems is critical to the mission of "protect and serve." Police communication skills -- needed to investigate crimes; de-escalate situations; build trust with communities; and write memos, reports and grants -- are crucial for everyone working in law enforcement, and especially for those with leadership aspirations. This is the ultimate guide to conflict resolution. Designed with police officers in mind, but filled with tools and techniques that anyone can use, topics include how to approach people and start a conversation, how to deal with difficult people, how to recognize the different personality types, and how to handle complaints. Plus much, much more.

Book The Foundations of Communication in Criminal Justice Systems

Download or read book The Foundations of Communication in Criminal Justice Systems written by Daniel Adrian Doss and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myriad forms of communication occur within the criminal justice system as judges and attorneys speak to juries, law enforcement officers interact with the public, and the news media presents stories of events in courtrooms. Hindrances abound, however. Law enforcement officers and justice system personnel often encounter challenges that affect their ability to communicate with others, ranging from language barriers, to conflicting accounts of witnessed events, to errors caused by malfunctioning technology. Examining the relevancy of the U.S. Constitution to modern communications, The Foundations of Communication in Criminal Justice Systems demonstrates how information is conveyed from multiple perspectives in a range of scenarios, enabling readers to see how these matters relate to and affect the criminal justice system. Topics covered include: How to use the communications process within the justice system from the crafting of messages through the solicitation of feedback Effective methods for persuading individuals and audiences Federal regulations in the workplace and workplace communications tactics How law enforcement and public safety entities use marketing and advertising to influence the general public How to use multimedia resources when communicating Using multiple communications styles to support effective leadership The book concludes with discussions on innovations in communication technology, natural language processing, cybernetics, and other emerging concepts. With an emphasis on logical reasoning in communication, the book explores the perspectives of numerous players in the justice system, from patrol officers to attorneys. Supplemented by examples of written communication templates that can be adapted within a law enforcement organization, it provides readers with solid theoretical and applied approaches to the subject matter.

Book Symbolic Communication

Download or read book Symbolic Communication written by Peter K. Manning and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first major empirical work on the semiotics of social action goes a long way toward answering substantive, theoretical and pragmatic questions on how codes actually operate in a specific social setting. It underscores the important yet often ignored role of the police as "sign" or "information workers."Calls to the police represent a rich variety of human troubles, concerns, and needs by focusing on how police handle calls from the public, how they ascertain what a call means and what should be done with it, and how this is transformed through subsystems within the organization, Peter Manning provides a novel way of looking at organizational communication."Symbolic Communication "provides examples of how members of an organization interpret their environment - in this instance, how the meaning of a call to the police is transformed as it moves across the boundaries of the organization (a transformation that involves a series of codings and recodings ensuring a continuous loose linkage of organization and environment). Manning shows why the police act in ways that differ from the way citizens and politicians would have them act, revealing the uncertainties that surround a policy agency's responsiveness. And he points out how today's computer technologies constrain the coding process, limiting in particular the effectiveness of the 911 systems used in most of our major cities.Peter K. Manning is a Professor of Psychiatry and of Sociology at Michigan State University and a member of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies at Oxford. "Symbolic Communication "brings to fruition themes and ideas introduced in his previous books, "Police Work "and "The Narc's Game. Symbolic Communication" is included in the Organization Studies series, edited by John van Maanen.
