Download or read book Political Corruption in Ireland 1922 2010 written by Elaine Byrne and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book empirically maps the decline in standards since the inauguration of Irish independence in 1922, to the loss of Irish economic sovereignty in 2010. It argues that the definition of corruption is an evolving one. As the nature of the state changes, so too does the type of corruption. New evidence is presented on the early institutional development of the state. Irish public life was motivated by an ethos which rejected patronage. Original research provides fresh insights into how the policies of economic protectionalism and discretionary decision-making led to eight Tribunal inquires. The emergence of state capture within political decision-making is examined by analyzing political favoritism towards the beef industry. The degree to which unorthodox links between political donations impacted on policy choices which exacerbated the depth of Ireland's economic collapse is considered. This book will appeal to students and scholars of Irish politics, corruption theory, governance, public policy, and political financing.

Download or read book Dirty Assets written by Colin King and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopting a multi-disciplinary and comparative approach, this book focuses on the emerging and innovative aspects of attempts to target the accumulated assets of those engaged in criminal and terrorist activity, organized crime and corruption. It examines the ’follow-the-money’ approach and explores the nature of criminal, civil and regulatory responses used to attack the financial assets of those engaged in financial crime in order to deter and disrupt future criminal activity as well as terrorism networks. With contributions from leading international academics and practitioners in the fields of law, economics, financial management, criminology, sociology and political science, the book explores law and practice in countries with significant problems and experiences, revealing new insights into these dilemmas. It also discusses the impact of the ’follow-the-money’ approach on human rights while also assessing effectiveness. The book will appeal to academics and researchers of financial crime, organized crime and terrorism as well as practitioners in the police, prosecution, financial and taxation agencies, policy-makers and lawyers.
Download or read book Chasing Criminal Money written by Katalin Ligeti and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fight against dirty money is not a new topic, nor a recent problem. It has existed within international and national agendas since the 1980s. Nonetheless, the evolving complexity of criminal skills and networks; the increasingly global dimension of crime; the financial crisis; and the alleged unsatisfactory results of the efforts hitherto undertaken cause us to re-pose and re-discuss some questions. This book addresses several issues concerning the reasons, objectives and scope of national and supranational strategies targeting criminal money, as well as the concrete modalities to overcome its obstacles. The main objective is to explore where the EU stands and where it ought to go, providing useful input for policy-makers and further research. Nevertheless, the problems are not limited to the EU area, and assets – particularly money – cross EU borders much more easily than people do. The reflections developed in the chapters, therefore, aim at going beyond these EU borders. The book is divided into two parts. The first one focuses on the core of asset recovery policies, namely confiscation or forfeiture laws, and explores in particular some issues concerning the respect of fundamental rights. The second part addresses other problematic aspects related to the asset recovery process, such as the return of assets to victim countries, the cross-border investigations on dirty money, and the social use of confiscated assets.

Download or read book The Development of Transnational Policing written by John McDaniel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws together the insights of eminent academics and specialists to present an overview of past and present approaches to transnational policing throughout the Anglophone world. It aims to revitalize the study of transnational policing by showing that past and present developments in this field remain poorly understood, while also suggesting future avenues of research. Containing chapters on police history, police accountability, gendered hate crime in an increasingly online world, counter-radicalisation strategies being pursued around the world, internet-facilitated sex trafficking and changes in organised crime, amongst others, the authors adopt revisionist, orthodox and progressive views in order to challenge our understanding and appreciation of developments in transnational policing. All of the chapters in the book use policing models employed within the UK as either their focal point or as a point of comparison so that direct comparisons and contrasts can be examined. The Development of Transnational Policing illustrates distinctive and separate aspects of what remains an undoubtedly complex and dynamic field, but also forms an overview of developments and the dearth of academic research which surround them, in order hopefully to inspire researchers, policymakers and practitioners alike.

Download or read book The Informer written by Sean O'Callaghan and published by Corgi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1988 IRA terrorist Sean O'Callaghan walked into a police station and gave himself up. Sentenced to 539 years' imprisonment for IRA crimes including two murders and many terrorist attacks, O'Callaghan served six of those years before being released by royal prerogative. The reason? For the previous sixteen years O'Callaghan had been the most highly placed informer within the ranks of the IRA and had fed the Irish Garda with countless pieces of invaluable information. He prevented the assassination of the Prince and Princess of Wales at a London theatre; he sabotaged operations, explained strategy and caused the arrests of many IRA members. He has done more than any individual to unlock the code of silence which governs the IRA's members, and in effect made it possible to fight the war against the terrorists. The Informer is the story of a courageous life lived under the constant threat of discovery and its fatal consequences. It is the story of a very modern hero, who is not without sin but who has done and is doing everything in his power, and at whatever personal cost, to atone for the past. From the Hardcover edition.
Download or read book The Irish Military College written by Tom Hodson and published by . This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its establishment in 1930 the Irish Military College has had a vital influence on not only the Defence Forces but on the nation. It has formed all of the nation's commissioned officers, many of whom have achieved distinction both within and outside of the Defence Forces. The story of this relatively unknown national institution is intriguing as it has attempted to fulfill the roles laid down for it in 1923 in training and instructing officers and officer candidates. The task has not been easy, as the Military College has inevitably been subject to the many changes and fluctuations in the duties, roles and fortunes of the wider Defence Forces. In this book Colonel Tom Hodson, a former instructor in the Military College and a graduate of École de Guerre, Paris, charts its history. He recounts how from its early predecessor, the Army School of Instruction, the Military College has repeatedly re-invented itself, culminating in the requirement for today's modern institution to embrace and impart instruction based on the needs of the Irish Defence Forces and the procedures of European and NATO armies.

Download or read book Hostage written by Paul Howard and published by O'Brien Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inside stories of Ireland's most famous abduction cases. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Ireland was hit by a spate of high-profile kidnappings: Lord and Lady Donoughmore, Belfast-based German industrialist Thomas Niedermayer, Ferenka chief Dr. Tiede Herrema, supermarket heir Ben Dunne, Quinnsworth's Don Tidey, and, bizarrely, the Aga Khan-owned Epson Derby-winner Shergar. The kidnappings had one thing in common -- they were all the work of paramilitary forces, carried out either as fund-raising efforts or for use as leverage to force the release of IRA prisoners. Hostage sheds new light on the Monasterevin siege, the ransom deals, the ordeals of the hostages, and how they were all rescued, except for Thomas Niedermayer, who, tragically, died, and Shergar, whose disappearance remains a mystery. It tells for the first time how the team was assembled to abduct billionaire Galen Weston, and why it all went wrong. Based on interviews with negotiators, hostages, gardai; and IRA sources, and the diary of one of the victims, Hostage reveals never-before-published details of these terrifying crimes.
