Book Polarization of Neutrons Scattered by Intermediate and Heavy Nuclei

Download or read book Polarization of Neutrons Scattered by Intermediate and Heavy Nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the polarization produced in the scattering of neutrons from heavy nuclei have been carried out at neutron energies of 380 and 980 kev. The Li/sup 7/(p, n)Be/sup 7/ reaction was used as a source of polarized neutrons. Right-left asymmetries in scattering of these neutrons from several elements ranging in atomic weight from 55 to 238 were measured at scattering angles of 55, 90, and 130 deg . With few exceptions the observed polarizations vary smoothly with atomic weight. Measured values of the polarization range from -0.11 to plus or minus 0.15 at 380 kev, and from --0.17 to plus or minus 0.20 at 980 kev. The results at 380-kev neutron energy are compared with values predicted by the complex square well potential modified by a surface spin-orbit interaction. Using several sets of well parameters it has not been possible to reproduce the experimental results. (auth).

Book Experimental Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Experimental Nuclear Physics written by Emilio Segrè and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of World War II many physicists who had been mobilized for the war effort returned to university work and to pure research; a great number of them had worked on nuclear problems and were anxious to resume investigations in this field. Moreover there was a large influx of students eager to start nuclear investigations. The need was keenly felt for a book which would bring the experimentalist up to date in experimental techniques, point out to him the significant facts and data, and indicate the broad lines of theoretical interpretation. It was immediately apparent that the field of nuclear physics had grown so much and the various branches had become so specialized that no one person could hope to write a book like the famous treatises of Rutherford (which, however, because of the evolution mentioned above, had by 1930 already become Rutherford, Chadwick, and Ellis), Curie, and Kohlrausch. A cooperative effort like the Geiger-Scheel Handbuch der Physik seemed the only solution. Individual authors could undertake to prepare reasonably complete treatises on a restricted field in which they are quite authoritative. By keeping the discussions relatively short, it became possible for a group of authors to cooperate without curtailing their research activity. An incentive for several of the indeed, was the desire to read the contributions of the others.
