Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book Pokeweed Phytolacca Americana

Download or read book Pokeweed Phytolacca Americana written by Arnold Krochmal and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Pokeweed, a plant abundant in Appalachia, exhibits some chemical similarities to a related species that has shown molluscicidal properties. Because this suggests that pokeweed, Phytolacca americana L. (P. decandra L.), has potential for controlling fresh-water snails, we have compiled this report of its chemical composition, uses, propagation methods, and other potentially useful species of the genus Phytolacca. The related species, Phytolacca dodencandra L'Her, was found to be the source of a molluscicide, which could pIay an important role in control of bilharziasis, a parasitic disease of humans widespread in Puerto Rico, Africa, and other tropical areas (22). Dead snails and small fish were observed in waterways in areas of Ethiopia where people washed their clothes with this Phytolacca's fruit, which is rich in saponins. Some distance downstream and immediately upstream from the washing places, abundant live snails were present, suggesting that the fruit contained a toxin acting as a molluscicide. This was subsequently confirmed by laboratory tests; tap-water extracts of the dried and powdered fruit had an LC100 (lethal concentration) of 10 parts per million against snails (Biomphalaria, Bulinus: and Lymnea spp.) after 24-hour exposure at 23OC. Furthermore, it was shown that molluscicidal potency was not affected by the presence of soil or vegetable matter, an important factor when the molluscicide is used under natural conditions. S3.

Book Toxicology and Human Environments

Download or read book Toxicology and Human Environments written by Ernest Hodgson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental toxicology is generally held to be the study of the potential of constituents of outdoor environments to impact either human health or the biological structure of the ecosystems involved. This volume is a first attempt to integrate toxicological studies of all of the many human environments, both indoor and outdoor, and their complex interrelationships. Included are considerations of natural environments, the agroecosystem, occupational, urban and domestic environments as well as the environment associated with Superfund sites and military deployments. The primary emphasis is on public health, including the potential health effects of toxicants found in different environments, the bioprocessing of such toxicants in humans and surrogate animals and the principles of risk analysis. Approaches the toxicology of human environments in a new and unique way, stressing the complex interrelationships of all human environments and the implication for human and environmental health Each chapter is written by an acknowledged expert and is addressed to those interested in the broader implications of the environmental modifications that are always associated with the activities of humans living and working in them

Book Identification and Control of Common Weeds Volume 2

Download or read book Identification and Control of Common Weeds Volume 2 written by Zhenghao Xu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to nearly 600 common weeds. In addition to essential information, each chapter includes photos for a specific type of weed to show its morphology in different growth periods, such as seedling, root, flower, fruit, and mature plant. The book also discusses control measures, including agricultural, chemical, physical, biological, and comprehensive methods. The Volume2 mainly focuses on fern and 216 species of weeds of magnoliids or dicotyledoneae. With the development of society and economics, weeds have become a recurring problem. In particular, the exotic, invasive, and quarantine weeds have spread dramatically and rapidly. On the other hand, many people, even those who are engaged in weed control, do not (or cannot) distinguish between weeds. Thus there is significant demand for illustrations of weed morphologies, as well as information on their control measures. This book offers a valuable, practical guide for all those working in the fields of crop cultivation, plant protection and quarantine management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Horticultural Society Book Award Winner: “An essential reference for all who wish to understand the science of the all-powerful weed.” —Better Homes and Gardens “What is a weed,” opined Emerson, “but a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered?” While that may be a worthy notion in theory, these plants of undiscovered virtue cause endless hours of toil for backyard gardeners. Wherever they take root, weeds compete for resources, and most often win. They also wreak havoc on industry—from agriculture to golf courses to civic landscape projects, vast amounts of money are spent to eradicate these virile and versatile invaders. With so much at stake, reliable information on weeds and their characteristics is crucial. Richard Dickinson and France Royer shed light on this complex world with Weeds of North America. Organized by plant family, this encyclopedic volume features over five hundred species in two-page spreads with images and text identification keys. Species are arranged within family alphabetically by scientific name, and entries include vital information on seed viability and germination requirements. No matter what your philosophy on weeds, this guide provides much-needed background on these intrusive organisms. In the battle with weeds, knowledge truly is power, and Weeds of North America is perfect for gardeners, botanists, nature lovers, or anyone working in the business of weed ecology and control. “Royer’s photographs are almost perversely alluring. . . . How can you not be ensnared by a book populated by prostrate pigweed, tansy ragwort and dog-strangling vine?” —New York Times Book Review

Book Common Pokeweed Phytolacca Americana L Management in Pennsylvania Field Crops

Download or read book Common Pokeweed Phytolacca Americana L Management in Pennsylvania Field Crops written by Kelly Patches and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common pokeweed (Phytolacca americana L.) is a perennial broadleaf weed with a large persistent taproot that is also capable of abundant seed production. It has become a frequent problem in agronomic crops in Pennsylvania. Traditionally, plowing was used to manage pokeweed; however, the wide-spread adoption of conservation tillage, a decline in the use of soil residual herbicides, and a decrease in diverse cropping rotations may have allowed pokeweed populations to increase in recent years. This research was conducted in order to identify opportunities to better manage pokeweed in corn, soybean, and other Northeast U.S. cropping rotations and shows that an integrated approach which includes both cultural and chemical tactics enables successful management of pokeweed in conservation tillage systems.Experiments were conducted in order to investigate the biology of common pokeweed in order to better time control tactics. In a pokeweed seedling emergence timing experiment, seedlings emerged throughout the summer, but peak emergence occurred in mid to late May. By August, pokeweed seedling emergence ceased. Both above- and below-ground pokeweed biomass decreased with delayed emergence and plants which emerged in late July did not produce mature berries by the end of the season. Experiments were also conducted to assess herbicide efficacy on pokeweed control. In corn, glyphosate, plant growth regulators, and other herbicides provided at least 80% control in trials conducted over a 3-year period. In soybean, glyphosate provided the best control of pokeweed; all treatments including glyphosate provided at least 80% control, while non-glyphosate treatments provided less than 62% control. Other glyphosate experiments examined herbicide rate, nozzle selection, carrier volume, and application timing. Air induction and flat fan nozzles provided the same level of control and in one of two years, 93 L/ha carrier provided better control than greater carrier volumes. The highest rates of 1.27 and 1.73 kg ae/ha provided the best control 12 weeks after application (WAA), but at 44 WAA, there was no difference in control due to glyphosate rate. Glyphosate application after mid-June provided better control than earlier in the summer. Even though pokeweed is a challenging weed to control, the results from this research show that there are options for controlling pokeweed in Pennsylvania field crops. Understanding the emergence pattern and current herbicide options has provided insight on how to better time control tactics and reduce this problematic weed. In order to control pokeweed, an integrated approach must be taken. Crop rotation and selection and timing of herbicide application are important for effective control.
