In this Catalogue we aim to describe only such rigs as are adapted to creamery and dairy work. Our engines are built from entire new patterns, with the latest improvements. Special attention has been paid to make all parts plain, simple, strong and durable; all the wearing surfaces are unusually large. The Material throughout is the best, and they are well made with the latest improved machinery, thereby securing accuracy and durability. The Frames are strong and well shaped. All the Cylinders have Hot Air Jackets, which decrease the condensation in the cylinders. The arrangement of the Steam Chest and Steam Ports is such that all the water forming in the cylinders is readily carried off, the Ports extending below the bottom of cylinders; and the heaters being still lower, a perfect drainage is secured. The Pumps are large and simple, firmly secured to cylinders and unable to get out of alignment; they are provided with large Air Chambers and Brass Valves and Seats, which can be readily taken out and replaced while the engine is working at full speed. The Center Cranks are large and made of solid forgings, and are not liable to break. The Pistons are fitted with self-adjusting steam packing rings, and do not require any attention, nor do they cut the cylinders; they are a great improvement over any other kind of packing. The Connecting Rods are of the most substantial character - of wrought iron, with straps, bolts and keys to take up the wear of the brass boxes. The Governors regulate the speed of the engines perfectly; they are provided with "speeders" to change the speed of the engines while in motion, and also with a hand lever attachment to the valve, which is convenient for controlling the speed of the engines when a uniform speed is not wanted, as when sawing, for instance. The General Design of our engines is neat and compact. The boilers are all made from the Very Best 60,000 lb. tensile strength Steel, and are thoroughly tested before leaving the shop. The specifications are, as you will note, very liberal. We carry the largest stock of these goods of any Dairy Supply House in this country, and our facilities for handling them are of the best. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE: IN the past few years great advances have been made in cheese making, and for the old rule of thumb, definite scientific reasons have been substituted. During the first three years of the Wisconsin Dairy School, the theoretical part of the instruction in cheese making was given by a series of lectures and quizzes along with the practical work. All books treating on cheese making were either out of date, because of the rapid advance in knowledge on the subject, or were unfitted for use as text books in a school. The instructor has learned by experience that in order to have the students properly grasp the subject before them, they must have a text book for use along with the lectures and quizzes, in short, with the advent of dairy schools, cheese making in pedagogic form was a necessity. There are other cheese makers who are not students in dairy schools and it was hoped that they might also find information in the book that would help them. This was proven to be true by the rapidity with which the first edition was exhausted, and the present edition has been revised with a view to more fully meeting the needs of such persons. Part I deals with the fermentations of milk and the process of making. Part II deals with the construction and operation of factories. Part III consists of questions which are answered in the text of parts I and II. The page on which the answer to the question may be found is indicated at the end of the question. Important Points are indicated by paragraph headings, and usually the answer can be immediately found by glancing at these. The writer believes that the questions in Part III will not only be helpful to students of dairy schools in mastering the subject, but that they will also be of aid to all students of cheese making. A careful study of the questions is urged, however simple they may seem, as an accurate knowledge of the details and the reasons why, of the various steps in the process is absolutely necessary in order to master the profession.

Book excerpt: Failure to build a new fleet of nuclear power stations in the UK could make it much more expensive to meet our climate change targets and Ministers must urgently develop a back-up energy strategy. The nuclear industry has outlined plans that would deliver 16GW new nuclear power stations by 2025. Although the Government and industry have learnt some important lessons from this process, there are still a number of obstacles which could delay new build projects in the UK. The Committee supports the Government's use of "Contracts for Difference" (CfDs) to help make new nuclear power stations easier to finance, but are concerned at the lack of transparency around the price negotiations. The new contracts must provide value for money for consumers and should not be offered at a price that is higher than other low-carbon sources of energy, such as offshore wind, which is hoped to be around £100/MWh by 2020. Public attitudes have an important role to play in projects to build new nuclear power stations. The Committee is concerned that local communities might not be able to take part in planning consultations on an equal footing with the project developers. The report recommends that the Government should consider providing more support to local community groups so that they can engage better with the planning process. The Government has plans to allow local authorities hosting renewable energy projects to retain business rates. The report argues that this scheme should be extended to new nuclear projects too.
