Book Four Augustan Science Poets Abraham Cowley James Thomson Henry Brooke Erasmus Darwin

Download or read book Four Augustan Science Poets Abraham Cowley James Thomson Henry Brooke Erasmus Darwin written by Richard Hillyer and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on four poets who because of their distinctive profiles illustrate especially well the opportunities and pitfalls of writing science poetry during the long eighteenth century Four Augustan Science Poets: Abraham Cowley, James Thomson, Henry Brooke, Erasmus Darwin offers numerous close readings that shed light not only on standard versions of the sublime but also on these idiosyncratic variants: the apologetic (Abraham Cowley), the illicit (James Thomson), the perverse (Henry Brooke) and the atheistic (Erasmus Darwin). Recurrent concerns include the similarities and differences among the languages of poetry, science and religion. Of the poets analyzed all but Thomson wrote extensive notes to accompany their lines, permitting further comparison of languages, in this case between the same authors’ poetry and prose.

Book Abraham Cowley 1618 1667

Download or read book Abraham Cowley 1618 1667 written by Michael Edson and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Cowley died, he was the most famous poet in England. His popularity continued throughout the eighteenth century. Yet Cowley has virtually disappeared from the canon today, even from metaphysical poetry collections, although it was Cowley who occasioned Samuel Johnson’s famous definition of metaphysical poetry. This book considers the circumstances behind Cowley’s falling out of the canon and what he might offer future generations of readers discovering his poetry anew.

Book Selected Poems

Download or read book Selected Poems written by Abraham Cowley and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham Cowley (1618-67) was one of the most popular English poets of his time. 'He must always,' said Dryden, 'be thought a great poet.' His work was held in high esteem by Milton, Johnson (who wrote one of the greatest of his Lives about him), Pope and Wordsworth. He has been unduly neglected in our century, and this selection, with critical introduction and annotations, is designed to re-introduce Cowley to modern readers as a writer of intrinsic rather than merely historical interest. His restoration to the available canon is timely: his poetry has lessons for the latter years of this century much as Donne's had for the poets of the early twentieth century. Abraham Cowley: Selected Poems is the only affordable selection of his work currently in print, and usefully complements the multi-volume library edition being produced by the University of Delaware Press.

Book excerpt: Cowley's Essays by Abraham Cowley is a collection of beautiful poems and paragraphs about various topics such as liberty, solitude, and obscurity. Excerpt: "Nunquam minus solus, quam cum solis," is now become a very vulgar saying. Every man and almost every boy for these seventeen hundred years has had it in his mouth. But it was at first spoken by the excellent Scipio, who was without question a most worthy, most happy, and the greatest of all mankind."

Download or read book The Civil War written by Abraham Cowley and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1973-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War is a poem which Abraham Cowley (1618-67) did not complete, for political and historical reasons, and of which only the first volume was published; the other two volumes have been considered irrecoverably lost since Cowley's death. Professor Pritchard recently found two copies of the complete poem in a collection of family papers at the Hertfordshire County Record Office and here presents a corrected edition of the first and previously published book, and the text of the hitherto unpublished books two and three. The poem is a major addition to the body of Cowley's poetry; it has close and sometimes surprising connections with much of his other work. It is not only the most extended and important of his political poems but a significant addition to the genre of the political poem. It is also unique as the attempt by a poet of stature to give epic treatment to the events of the English Civil War. Professor Pritchard provides a discussion of the personal, historical, and literary contexts of the poem in the introduction, as well as of textual problems and methods, showing the way in which the poem is shaped both by contemporary history and polemics and by classical and later literary tradition.
