Book excerpt: This book of poems began forty years ago when our family moved from Evansville, Indiana, to Hillsborough, North Carolina, a small town near Durham and Chapel Hill. We moved into a large house on a ninety-acre farm. Our family consisted of my wife, Adrian, and our three sons, Jo (age eleven) and identical twins, Mike and Dan (age eight). On Christmas Eve 1975, I thought of a poem to write to my wife, Adrian. I put it in the tree that evening, and she found it Christmas morning. She was so fond of it that she asked that I write her a poem each Christmas. So for the next forty-plus years, with only few exceptions, I wrote a Christmas Eve poem each year. The subject matter varied but was always tied in to our family and Adrian. Since we lived on a farm, we tried farming for the years the sons were at home. We tried raising cattle, and one of my favorite monikers for Adrian, Mrs. Moo, was derived from it. She was always hopping around very busily, and that is why I also refer to her as Toad. Jo married and had three children: Caleb, Megan, and Jacob. He was later divorced but remarried to Kelli. Mike married Sonya, and they have three children: Michael, Elizabeth, and Richard. Dan married Kimmie, and they have two children: Sarah and Kenneth. To me, the most amazing thing about these poems is that on every single occasion, without exception, I thought of the poem on Christmas Eve, not a minute before. It became very stressful as each Christmas approached, since I had not a clue of what I was going to write. So many times I thought I was going to have to say that I simply could not think of anything, but each Christmas Eve, something would come to me.

In the Latin West poetry was mainly associated with the powerful pagan tradition of writers like Vergil and Ovid, and by many poetry was considered to tell lies and provide mere entertainment potentially corrupting the soul. Therefore, Christians initially had reservations about this genre and believed it to be incompatible with Christian worship, literacy and intellectual activity. In practice, however, forms of specifically Christian poetry developed from the end of the third century onwards; theoretical reconciliations were developed around 400 A.D. This collection examines specimens of Christian poetry from Juvencus (the first biblical epicist shortly after 300) up to the thirteenth century. Its particular usefulness lies in the combination of literary theory and hermeneutics, close readings of the texts and new readings on a sound philological basis.

The annotations and headnotes are full and informative, and the layout is designed to enable the reader to navigate easily between the poems, the record of variants and the editorial commentary. The poems are presented in chronological order of publication, with original capitalisation, italicisation, punctuation and spelling preserved. A record of variants to each poem illustrates the changes Pope made in subsequent editions, and full editorial annotation sets the poems in appropriate literary, historical and cultural contexts. This volume contains the poetry that appeared between 1709 and 1714, including the Pastorals and the ‘Rape of the Locke’. Much of the publication history of these poems shows Pope collaborating with the major writers and publishers of his time, as might be expected of a writer whose preparation for a literary career was so meticulous. But Pope was also beginning to establish himself on his own account, publishing (at first anonymously) a substantial statement of ideas, An Essay on Criticism. Another separate pamphlet, Windsor-Forest, constituted his distinctive contribution to the heavy freight of ‘Peace’ poems prompted by the Treaty of Utrecht. A major revision of his earlier narrative, ‘The Wanderings of Oisin’, takes place in this decade when Yeats is also taken up with the composition of elaborate and uncanny symbolic lyrics, many of them resulting from his love for Maud Gonne, that are finally collected in The Wind Among the Reeds (1899). This edition makes it possible to trace in detail Yeats’s debts to folklore and magic, alongside his involved and often difficult private and public life, in poetry of exceptional complexity and power.
