This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetics, or a Series of Poems and Disquisitions on Poetry, Vol. 1 An ancient Greek philosopher compared the whole Of human life to the letter upsilon, which answers to our-y. The earlier part he represented by the straight line, before its declining to the right hand or to the left. This was the course of simple innocence, and unembarrassed ease. But he supposed there was a period, when the mind took a turn, and that, according as the direction was then made, would be the bias, which prompted the course, and which de termined the character, of the future man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetics, or a Series of Poems, and Disquisitions on Poetry, Vol. 2 Mineralogy and the study of fossils do not touch the mere surface of things, but reach a certain depth of very useful philosophical inquiry: and even the collector of shells, if one degree above a child over his playthings, is necessarily brought into the regions of natural history. Here are shells for the ladies, as a certain person says when writing an account of the British Museum, is one of those idle observations in which smartness is a veil for ignorance, and impertinence supplies the place of com mon sense. Book Poetic Form in Blake s MILTON

Download or read book Poetic Form in Blake s MILTON written by Susan Fox and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blake's two finished epics have been widely regarded as combinations of brilliant set pieces which yield to no systematic rhetorical criticism. Susan Fox contests this view, discovering in Milton an elaborate verbal structure that is fully congruent with the poem's philosophy. She has made the first full exposition of the formal principles of a late Blake poem, and it suggests that the late prophecies are as profound in their artistic structures as they are in their thematic ones. The author begins by tracing throughout Blake's poetry the development of the techniques found in Milton. She then provides an analysis in two chapters organized, as she perceives the poem to be, in parallel three-part units. Her examination reveals the exhaustive parallelism of the poem's books, as well as more local devices such as paired stanzas and circular rhetoric. The rhetorical pattern which emerges raises several major thematic issues which are treated in the concluding chapter. In demonstrating the coherence and control of the intricate formal patterns of Milton, this study provides a new measure of Blake's late verbal art. Originally published in 1976. Book Language Architect Rhyming Poetry and Poems That Rhyme

Download or read book Language Architect Rhyming Poetry and Poems That Rhyme written by Brian Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within Language Architect are dozens of the best original poems ever written--being released for the first and only time--with focus on technique, rhyme, and depth of substance and sentiment. The rest of the jokes and wordplay, opinions and thoughts, and abstruse esoterica have been included to reach an audience beyond that which appreciates the poetic ingenuity of the book''s core. Immediately below is a poem entitled "Failure" that you''ll find on page 154 of Language Architect: I never used to learn from you, I''d watch you fall, then do it too, As if the things I didn''t do Were causing scars I didn''t earn. Sometimes I''ve learned my lessons twice, Your pain alone would not suffice, For often when you''ve paid the price It hasn''t cost enough to learn. But I am not what you became, Instead I''m what you couldn''t tame, I find myself inside the flame: The only place I know I''ll burn. It is a place I''ve always known, To which I often go alone, For when I get there on my own I know each time I won''t return. The author''s unapologetic conceit shines through the pages of Language Architect with the brilliance of a thousand exploding suns. Some of the poetry is uplifting and inspirational, other poems are farcical and comedic, while still more of the works are introspective and deep-reaching--coaxing the mind of the reader to a sanctuary of inner discovery. Interspersed throughout the book are puns, jokes, satire, and aphoristic quotes, as well as a few brief disquisitions delineating contemplative, thought-provoking opinions on an eclectic collection of subjects ranging from the origin of UFOs to how society could make strides toward bettering the criminal justice system. If you''ve ever thought that rhyming poetry had to be juvenile and superficial, many of these poems will transform your way of thinking with a masterful use of language rarely seen from today''s poets and with the honed talent of dictating rhyme without sacrificing purport or pith. When was the last time you treated yourself to a genuine expansion of mind and spirit through verse? Today is the day; right now is the time: go back to the top and click "Buy Now." Take your perspective from the banal and the commonplace to a novel expanse of cavernous, transformational wonderment. If the book''s content doesn''t deliver on the creative ability professed herein, just ask for a refund. How big of a gamble is it really? We aren''t talking about purchasing a new car :) Allow yourself to revel in inventive, avant-garde rhyme schemes devised ingeniously, developed with never-before-seen lyrical precision that transcends the page, followed rhythmically to intricate, syllabic perfection. How often is there an opportunity to enrich your thinking that can be consumed and digested in bite-size chunks? Part of the beauty of Language Architect is that it doesn''t necessitate a commitment to any more than one or two pages of reading at a time. A single poem or joke can be read, and groups of poems and content are subtly divided into sections as well. This philosophy is perfect for anyone with a busy, on-the-go lifestyle or people who simply avoid commitment. It is relevant to acknowledge, however, that draft copies prior to publication were referred to as "addictive" and "difficult to put down." Just see what the folks thought about it who are cited on the back cover by going up to the top of the page to the paperback images. Then click "Buy Now" :) And if these entirely irrelevant opinions of people you don''t know haven''t convinced you, let me grasp aimlessly at some fleeting humility and simply ask nicely: Please give my book a try. I put years of my best work into it and it helps me out a lot that you''re willing to get it here today. I extend to you my most earnest thanks and appreciation.

Book excerpt: Poetry. African & African American Studies. 2017 Whiting Award Winner for Poetry. "I get this pinwheel relationship to wisdom & history when I read Simone White. I'm in her dream, but it's a remarkable solidly packed one informed by the quotidian rarity of for instance a prose disquisition on lotion and skin and haircare especially in winter. Like Dana Ward's, her work sends me searching. Like what part of speech is here. As I'm wondering Simone sometimes exits first, and I even feel that a real piece of her poem is adamantly not here and that is her privacy, her power & her skill so what kind of quest is it, this beautiful complex & alive work. Here's my best guess. OF BEING DISPERSED is an ur text of the fourth wave of feminism which we come to realize is ocean and women are now standing on it and amidst this clatter of voices Simone White walks."--Eileen Myles "In Simone White's poetry the action is always multiple, palpable, sounding as thought, coming forward through this highly sensitized plane, sudden and hovering, exchanging centers, afflicted and added to by company. The continuous listening company demands--company including imaginary self, receding boundaries, the horseman on the night's street, the live, the loved, the drunk, the words, the turnstile, the endless destructive projections people force--and the rendering of that listening into irreducible depths of tone, wit, and perception constitute much of what makes OF BEING DISPERSED a masterful book. Buzzing word-love marking time beat by beat, being the ground inside and out, makes up the rest."--Anselm Berrigan "Macaronic plenitude of language instantiates places and states of mind. If Edouard Glissant says that we write in the presence of all the world's languages, then we have in Simone White's OF BEING DISPERSED, an underground stream reaching the surface of the page--in lines acrobatic and limber, fluent in code switch, mood shift and modes of inquiry. I read White's volume as a poetic lens on the specificities of the diaspora and the 'dispersed,' written with baroque skepticism, feminist vision and attention to the complications of a Black yet to be storyed any/where."--Erica Hunt
