Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetical Letters Tu Es Brither Jan and a Witch Story: Tea, Old Humman Way Tea, Urd Cloke, Ur Tea Evil Eye, in the Devonshire Dialect The success which has attended the publication of "Nathan Hogg's Letters" in the two former Editions, has induced the Author to present them to the public on the third occasion in an amended form. - In the first place it may be stated that the Epistles to his respected relative were originally written without even the remotest idea of their being published beyond the limits of a Newspaper column; there were consequently many allusions to public abuses, which, tho' having the desired effect at the time, it is considered undesirable to reproduce in the present edition. The object of the Author is simply to record the idioms and phrases of the vernacular of the county in which he was born, and in a form best calculated to exhibit that quaint humour and native wit with which the "Countryman" of Devon is so largely embued. With this view some letters have been omitted, others added, the Vocabulary enlarged, and "last, not least," Nathan having ventured on an extended path of literature, presents his admiring friends with the result in the shape of a Witch Story!
