Download or read book New Queer Cinema written by Aaron Michele Aaron and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coined in the early 1990s to describe a burgeoning film movement, 'New Queer Cinema' has turned the attention of film theorists, students and audiences to the proliferation of intelligent, stylish and daring work by lesbian and gay filmmakers within independent cinema, and to the proliferation of 'queer' images and themes within the mainstream. But what constituted New Queer Cinema then and now? And was it political gains, cultural momentum or market forces that determined its evolution? New Queer Cinema is divided into sections on the definition, the filmmakers, the geography, and the spectator of New Queer Cinema. Chapters address the pivotal directors (e.g. Todd Haynes and Gregg Araki) and the salient films (e.g. Paris is Burning and Boys Don't Cry) but also non-mainstream and non-Anglo-American work (e.g. experimental film and third cinema). With a critical eye to its uneasy relationship to the mainstream, the volume explores the aesthetic, socio-cultural, political and, necessarily, commercial investments of New Queer Cinema. This book, the first full-length study of the subject, offers the definitive guide to New Queer Cinema combining indispensable discussions of its central issues with exciting new work by key writers. Features*Provides a definitive introduction to New Queer Cinema (NQC)*Clear structure with each section addressing a key topic in the study of NQC*Themes covered include genre, gender and race, politics, media, and the relationship between NQC and the mainstream.
Download or read book Radical written by Maajid Nawaz and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maajid Nawaz spent his teenage years listening to American hip-hop and learning about the radical Islamist movement spreading throughout Europe and Asia in the 1980s and 90s. At 16, he was already a ranking member in Hizb ut-Tahrir, a London-based Islamist group. He quickly rose through the ranks to become a top recruiter, a charismatic spokesman for the cause of uniting Islam’s political power across the world. Nawaz was setting up satellite groups in Pakistan, Denmark, and Egypt when he was rounded up in the aftermath of 9/11 along with many other radical Muslims. He was sent to an Egyptian prison where he was, fortuitously, jailed along with the assassins of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. The 20 years in prison had changed the assassins’ views on Islam and violence; Maajid went into prison preaching to them about the Islamist cause, but the lessons ended up going the other way. He came out of prison four years later completely changed, convinced that his entire belief system had been wrong, and determined to do something about it. He met with activists and heads of state, built a network, and started a foundation, Quilliam, funded by the British government, to combat the rising Islamist tide in Europe and elsewhere, using his intimate knowledge of recruitment tactics in order to reverse extremism and persuade Muslims that the ‘narrative’ used to recruit them (that the West is evil and the cause of all of Muslim suffering), is false. Radical, first published in the UK, is a fascinating and important look into one man's journey out of extremism and into something else entirely. This U.S. edition contains a "Preface for US readers" and a new, updated epilogue.

Download or read book Jesus the Radical written by H. C. Kim and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-05-22 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you think about when someone mentions Easter? The Easter Bunny and brightly colored eggs? Wonderful sales on clothing? Special deals in your favorite restaurant? The first Easter two thousand years ago was not celebrated by hordes of people as if it were just another holiday. On this day, Jesus of Nazareth found his disciples frightened and tearful. The followers of Jesus Christ were recovering from the sadness that they had felt at the horrific manner in which Jesus had been beaten, humiliated, and crucified. Jesus' disciples were afraid for their own lives, having seen their Lord crucified on the cross like a common criminal who deserved the death penalty. The enemies of Christ were jubilant because they thought that they had wiped out the Jesus movement, the nascent Christianity that had emerged in the land. Shouts of "Crucify Him! Crucify Him" still rang in the ears of many. Who would have thought that the first Easter would become so central in the history of the world? Some Christians have willingly given up their lives to celebrate the first Easter. In this collection of poems, H. C. Kim focuses on the immediate events leading up to the first Easter and ponders the resurrection message.
Download or read book Jesus the Harmony written by Gracia M. Grindal and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this one-of-a-kind volume, author and poet Gracia Grindal has written 366 sonnets based on the life and ministry of Jesus to inspire meditation and reflection. Each poem entry is based on a specific biblical connection and relates to a holy day or season. The book's introduction provides historic background on Gospel harmonies, tells the story of how the author created the sonnets, and offers suggestions for using this unique devotional volume. The author describes the project as a holy obsession. Grindal uses a Harmony of the Gospels by Johannes Thorbjûrnson Ylvisaker (1845-1917) to guide her selection of lessons to set in sonnet form. Traditional lists of texts have been used devotionally by the church over the centuries to tell the story of Jesus. (The reading of the Passion story on Palm/Passion Sunday, for example, is traditionally called a harmony.) Ultimately, the goal is to encourage creative reflection on these texts. The author compares this distinctive collection to work of French painter James Tissot, who painted some 350 paintings depicting the story of Jesus. The poems are written accessibly but often have a twist or metaphor at the end, to cause readers to be moved or surprised and to make connections with the rest of life, the Bible, and the reader's own story. These poems may be used one per day as a devotional meditation, or as readings in sermons, teaching, or worship.
